Sandi (the Voice) Patty owns this song. This is without a doubt the only rendition that I truly love and cherish. It makes me proud and honored to be an American. This song that she sings gives me goose bumps galore.
And now, 15 years after even THIS legendary performance, they say her voice is just as pristine! This woman just has the voice that will not quit! She has been called the female David Phelps, but she came before David Phelps, so maybe David Phelps is the male Sandi Patty! LOL
A portion of this song that Sandi Patty is performing here; was to air one of the local tv stations here in Southeast Ohio area; WHIZ TV ZANESVILLE, OHIO... I am proud that she sings that song with pride... TY SANDI for performing; & thanks goes out to LAUDEMIRS for putting this on YOUTUBE....
Finally, somebody has uploaded the version broadcast on ABC that instantly made Sandi Patty a household name around the country during the Statue of Liberty Centennial in 1986.
Place the following in the search field at the top of the page: Jj4S2mJ7GUw
Be warned. If you liked this 1997 version and have any feelings at all for this country, the earlier, even more powerful rendition with a video montage from the celebration will send chills down your spine.
The absolute best arrangement and performance of the Star Spangled Banner. Her voice is just beautiful and a song that not everyone can sing. It brings me to tears everytime I hear her perform this.
between Whitney and Sandi Patti, Sandi has a better voice. Drugs do a lot of different thing to your voice--Sandi knows that, she never does drugs. Whitney, on the other hand.. mmmm..
We play this song to open our last concert in high school, the extravaganza. ( a big concert honoring the seniors) I love playing this song, it send chills down my back each year. This is my last year to play.
There are four original verses. She sings only the first of those. Her version adds one verse, but it's not one of the originals. Rather, it was written for her.
You are right. I knew there was more than one, but I had forgotten there were four. I did not recall the lyrics for the other three, and was not aware that this verse had been written for her. I stand corrected, and thank you for this info.
Back when our country was a God-fearing nation, all verses of our national anthem were printed on the back of all elementary school book covers. Apparently we need to inscribe those words on the back of laptop computers in our so-called modern era.
She has a fine voice, and her B at the end it pretty amazing. But I'm not a fan of the additional lyrics. Yikes. It's a really really cheesy version of a great song, especially the orchestrations. It doesn't stand the test of time. Give the Whitney superbowl version a listen. It's absolutely amazing.
Heard it. It's not that good and certainly not "amazing." Younger people tend to be impressed by the vocal acrobatics that Whitney and later singers like to use, but don't understand that it doesn't necessarily make a song better.
Part of singing the Star Spangled Banner is blending grace and and a sense of power into one song, Whitney has the capability to make you feel just that with her voice. This Sandy lady has a graceful voice, but that's just it, it just graceful. She doesn't give the sense of power in her voice that Whitney can. Well its just my opinion, in then end Whitney's version is the one that gives me chicken skin
You're judging Sandy on a live version she did eleven years past her peak, in her 40s, compared to Whitney lip-syncing to a version that was pre-recorded, tweaked and mixed to within an inch of its life while she was still in her prime at 28. Yeah, that's a fair comparison. Try listening to her 1986 recording instead then talk about lack of "power."
@RoyKnable Whitney also sang her superbowl rendition live a few months later and sang it just as well if not better than the recording. Everyone lipsycnhs at the superbowl due to the acoustics.
@IWDWSWLM, is this chimier? lol, because of the acoustic, PLEASE. They lipsynch because they lack guts. If Sandi, Shanice, Jennifer Holliday etc to perform, it would be LIVE - Even if thy have to do it without 'the acoustic.'
@Kumtekmeon Whitney in her prime has shown time and time again that she can sing live, and often do her recorded songs better live. If you are trying to claim Whitney had no guts as a live performer then you will have a hard time proving that or being taken seriously.
Nearly all singers lipsynch the anthem for the superbowl.
@IWDWSWLM, from my research, singers OFTEN opt to lipsynch rather than do it live out of fear that it may not go as rehearsed. BUT they are given the option. Also from mishaps in time past the pregame show committee asks that performers make what they called a 'protection copy' to guard against any unforeseen problem. WH chose to lipsynch that day due to the humid condition AND NOT because of the acoustic.
@Kumtekmeon In saying all of that, what is your point Regarding Whitney Houston? that since she lipped that day, that she COULD NOT have done it live? That she has stage fright? Is that what you believe? What exactly are you getting at?
@IWDWSWLM, my point is to inform you that artists DON'T lipsynch at the super bowl because of the acoustics; they have the option to sing LIVE and it's up to them to decide, which they do depending on their state of being at that very moment.
@Kumtekmeon As long as you are not trying to diminish the artistry of the musicians thats fine. But acoustics DO play a part, whether you think they do or not.
Sorry, But I'm going to have to disagree with you. This is the version that all the tv stations in Indianapolis start their day with. Sandi's voice makes you so very proud to be an American, she sings this with Soul. Not taking anything away from Witney, this is just a better version.
I thought the orchestra and chorus sucked but thank you Sandi for holding them together with your "glue" of good music. I lost the key at the end a little bit but Sandi resounded the B that I was looking for (it was the chorus' fault!)
Do you have that version or know where it is? I saw/heard the actual program on ABC and I cannot find it anywhere on the web. I've looked for 5 years.
Awesome!!!

The second verse she sings is not part of the original text. It was written by Claire Cloninger.

Actually, what we use as the National Anthem, is only the 1st verse of the original Star Spangled Banner. Sandi is singing the whole thing.
