The protests are silly. First of all, anyone who hasn't been to Tibet to see what's going on for themselves should not make uninformed assumptions about how good or bad the situation there is. Second, even if the situation is bad, the Chinese government is not going to free Tibet just because a bunch of people from other countries scream and shout and say angry things. The protesters are like a bunch of angry children who are just making things worse and increasing tension between the countries.
The Chinese people are irresponsible, look at the pollution in their cities!!! They will do anything to make a dollar. They repress and lie to their own people so that nobody can debate or try to change the way the party works. There is no free flow of information in China the way there is here, so it is very difficult for Chinese citizens to look at their government from the outside in. But here's the funny thing: Before the riots and protests, Tibet was very accessible to western media, yet none of them interviewed any Tibetan living in Tibet about what they think, how they feel about their lives and rights. So far, the "Tibetans" you hear or see on TV are those born and living in US or Europe. Whenever the media talks about "crackdown" they have to show you Nepalese police. That doesn't add up as genuine "caring about the Tibetans".

Who is brainwashed? Tibetans scholars who have studied extensively the Tibet situation will tell you who is telling truth and who is telling lies. Read Melvyn Goldstein, Cynthia Beall, Tom Grunfeld. If you are thick, the summary is that the facts support the CCP side, not Dalai.

The protests are silly. First of all, anyone who hasn't been to Tibet to see what's going on for themselves should not make uninformed assumptions about how good or bad the situation there is. Second, even if the situation is bad, the Chinese government is not going to free Tibet just because a bunch of people from other countries scream and shout and say angry things. The protesters are like a bunch of angry children who are just making things worse and increasing tension between the countries.

I think a lot of what you say is probably right, but I don't think the reason the Chinese won't stand up to their government is because they're a bunch of cowards. There is no free flow of information in China the way there is here, so it is very difficult for Chinese citizens to look at their government from the outside in. Protesting against the government is illegal and carries incredibly strict penalties, unlike here, where it takes no guts at all to protest.

Wrong, the pollution in Chinese cities also come from foreign factories who violate enviorenemntal rules in China to make more profit, last year, China had to close almost 800 foreign factories because they were violating enviornemental rules! This has nothing to do with being "irresponsible". If there are ppl who stand up against the Chinese governement then it would be the Chinese people in the first place.

This certainly has been a deep rabbit hole :). So far DPA is the only agency reporting this piece independently. There is this Chinese site in the US with a briefing mentioning of the Chinese embassy in Germany refuting the news.
Considering there is obviously a media/propaganda war going on, I wouldn't buy either side's story until one of the over 100000 foreign students step up to verify.

I wasn't surprised when the government announced restrictions on access to Beijing for the domestic populace, since it has been a common practice whenever any event of political significance took place in Beijing. But restricting foreigners' access to Beijing during an event that supposedly "brings the world together" is just counter-intuitive. Honestly foreigners enjoy a lot more privilege in Beijing than the locals.

That's a welcome message. But here's the funny thing: Before the riots and protests, Tibet was very accessible to western media, yet none of them interviewed any Tibetan living in Tibet about what they think, how they feel about their lives and rights. So far, the "Tibetans" you hear or see on TV are those born and living in US or Europe. Whenever the media talks about "crackdown" they have to show you Nepalese police. That doesn't add up as genuine "caring about the Tibetans".

While supporters view the Tibetan issue as an issue of sovereignty that allows the West to curb and contain Chinese development, demonstrators view it as an issue of governmental suppression and Han Chinese hegemony. Because both sides are so invested in their own causes, they can easily dismiss the views of the other side, which is unfortunate to the Tibetan cause, to China's future development and to world peace.

I feel ashamed that those who come to the U.S. do not even tolerate a different view of a Chinese college student. I hope and strongly believe that all the outcries against her do not represent all Chinese students in the U.S. It is so ironic that people here use the freedom that they did not enjoy back in China to do things to hurt the freedome of others. Tibetan issue is such a complicated issue and Western media need to be more careful in their reports in order not to simplify it.

lxyupc: Taiwan does not belong to China. no matter how many laws or treaties you have to back your statement, your government has no authority in Taiwan. more and more taiwanese refuse to be recognized as chinese. I admit that i do not like the chinese government, but who wouldn't if they have 1000+ missiles pointed at you.i have to agree with you that china is getting better, but only economically.for china to become a country that the world respects, i think still has a long way to go.

Chinese start to create big problems everywhere in the world. In Asia - they're well known and hated! Why? Their attitude: no respect for other cultures, no integration with local cultures, arrogance, 'superiority' complex, general bad manners and common cheating. On top of that: PRC with communist regime ordering their little peasants overseas to riot anywhere in the world and spread lies how fantastic, free and democratic is the life in China! Just pathetic!

The behavior of Chinese students was similar to the madness committed by the thugs during the Chinese Culture Revolution. The letter CSSA posted on the website was just a lip service that doesn't even begin to right the wrongs. It is disappointing to see so called educated Chinese be so intolerant and incapable of conducting civilized exchange. Chinese Communist Party did a good job of making sure that students are brain washed and brain dead after passing through the system.
