  • The English signs peppered now, it seems people like making pot shots at it. It's funny the Welsh sign opposite the English is untouched... When crossing the Borders I ran the distance to say I ran from England to Wales before hoping back on the narrow boat!

  • usually im not a man for superlatives BUT I make an exception here. If you want to know what heaven looks like then go to Llangollen,,,,it is easily the most beautiful place Ive ever been to in my life..........the chirk castle and all its animals and geese ... the other smaller castles....the steam trains...the lakes.....the snowdon mountains and cadair idris.....the ancient bautiful old shops untouched unspoilt in centuries ...then the rivers and the canals and the bridges and aquaducts....

  • roy west

  • Cheers Bobbysky - we do our best :-)

  • @BarbaraThatcher rELA SPECIAL .. ;OVE THE lLANGOLLEN BRANCH .. 4 TIMES BUT NOT SINCE THE lLANGOLLEN MARINA/MOORINGS PUT IN /// SPECIAL MEMORIES REVIVED THANKS

  • A very nice video and tour,thanks.

  • Nice video, enjoyed watching it! :)

I always wondered what would happen if a canal bridge collapsed.

I know they have locks every so often along the canal, but i know a few Canal Bridges near where i live and the nearest locks are miles away.

Heard that they have slots at either side of the bridge, where they put wooden beams in, should the bridge fail.

But if the bridge totally collapsed, how would they get a piece of wood down against the force of the current, as the water pour's down...

  • I'm going here in 4 weeks time for a week and it looks lovely!

  • I've been on that canal two times, one of the loveliest places I've ever been.

  • maybe I should go there someday

  • Thanks danlefou - yours is pretty good too

  • Lovely vid, Barbara. Nice to see Taff pulling a boat.

I've just posted a clip of Tog bringing the James Brindley into Llangollen.

  • I was on that bridge last week with my brother. What happened to the chicken wire on the railings? The gaps are big enough for a slim adult to fall through, never mind a small child! I used to love walking there and fishing the canal several years ago. I live in Japan now, no canals here :(

  • Oh my god!!! High season, 50 boats each side and not knowing what the hold-up was. POOR THINGS!!! It must have been terrible. Hope they are all OK now. Not funny at the time, but hope they can laugh about it someday. BLESS!

  • dimps10 cant belive that lift bridge was broke i could imagine the queues. the busiest canal on the network at at peak season. hope it didnt snap as a boat was going under.

by the way do u ever go to the aquaduct inn or the indian???

  • emmerdale pat great minds think i like haha

ive just booked to go on the norfolk broads again in october love it down there, i was thinking abouting going up to the lochs in scotland next year maybe march at the start of the season but i would have to fly up as it is far to long a journey for me.

  • the chain on the lift bridge snapped last week and the bridge was down for a day .There were 50 boats each side and they were stopped coming over the aquaduct. All fixed now ,just thought you might like to know.

  • Thanks daveyboi2050. The holiday was fantastic and I've been narrowboating before. Went a few times as a teenager years ago in Norfolk, then last year took my family on the Kennet and Avon from Devizes in Wiltshire to Bath. Scenery stunning!!! We're talking about doing the Caledonian Canal in Scotland next year. Can't wait to see the lochs and mountains. Good luck and happy boating on your next hols!!!

  • Hi emmerdale pat glad you enjoyed you boating holiday. and yes dont they go over quick. then again doesnt ever holiday.

was this you first time on the a narrowboat?

ibve just been looking at doing another trip on the llangollen in march and i have found some cheap prices with tillerman boats from ellsmere

  • Super informative video - we did a week from Wrenbury Mill to Llangollen earlier this month - had a fantastic time and no rain whatsoever!!! - your video brought back fond memories

  • Glad you liked the video. We're in Jsckson Hole, Wyoming at the moment and I'm planning my next video of the Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. Watch this space (if I can get to grips with editing High Def video)!

  • We're back! I knew it was going to go quickly. The boat, weather and scenery were fab, looked out for dimps 10 and Llangollen was so lovely. Guess what, Barbara, I did it!!! I walked over the Ponty!!! Lost my nerve at the beginning and in the middle, saw other people crossing who were far more scared than me, but we encouraged each other across. Sea-legs then kicked in, I'm sure the aqueduct was MOVING!!!!!Brill holiday all round.

  • Good for you Pat - I hope you left someone responsible in charge of the boat!

  • Thank you Hugh for the brill photos. We are packing now ready to pick up our boat at Whitchurch to head to Llangollen. In a funny way we will be almost sorry to go on Sunday because the holiday will be over within a week!! Sounds crazy but I know you all know what I mean. Just praying the weather will be ok and anyone just about to go narrowboating, HAVE A BRILL TIME!!

  • hugh some loverly pictures on your site. brings back some good memories from march.

deffnitley looking to do it again soon.

am a bit hooked on the norfolk broads at the moment thou...so will do the llangollen again nxt year i think.

    dave

  • Great video

please take a look at my video called save our waterways its on you tube too.

  • Hi, I loved your video too - not to mention one of my favourite Bette Midler songs on the soundtrack. It's such a shame to see overgrown canals - we walked along the towpath of the Montgomery Canal last year and many parts of it are crying out for restoration. Keep up the good work. Barbara

  • Wow, that was great! It looks so beautiful there. Just a comment... I would have liked to see the interior of the boat as well. Cheers!

  • Hi, We did the Llangollen Canal in May and although the weather was awful we still enjoyed it very much. It's a very picturesque if busy canal. We hired from Black Prince also and had the "Teal" which is a 62 foot boat. You can see pics of the interior on my pic site, w w w dot shug dot smugmug dot com feel free to have a look. Hugh.

  • Thanks Hugh, enjoyed the photos - they brought back memories especially the Bridge Inn at Chirk. We arrived there late and hungry on a Sunday night and they weren't serving food but ordered us a meal from the Indian takeway who delivered our meal to the pub and the landlord provided plates - now that's what I call service!

  • loverly video i done the llangollen canal in march for a week was superb...

the person who said he lived by the lift bridge in fron well can i just say wot a loverly indian there next to post office!!!!

oh and the local pub the aquaduct!!!!

  • Just look straight ahead and think of England (or Wales) :-)

  • Hello again Barbara

I'm laughing at myself. Just after I posted my last message, I realised that 'dimps10' is the person who logged on just before me!

  • Hello Barbara. Lovely to hear from you. What is Dimps 10?

By the way I forgot to say I'm terrified of heights. The Pontcysyllte is going to be a challenge but I can't wait to give it a go!!

  • Have a lovely time EmmerdalePat. Don't forget to wave to dimps10 as you go past the lift bridge!

  • Lovely video Barbara. It has got me very excited about our LLangollen trip which is in four weeks time! Read up a lot about the narrow stretches and long tunnels and you have confirmed that contact between two parties on the mobile phone is the way to go......Thanks

  • nice video i live right next to the lift bride in fron so it was nice to see tripers enjoving their holidays thanks

  • Thanks for your kind remarks. We arrived for our 4 day break on a Saturday and when we saw everyone else leave Chirk in the direction of Lllangollen we decided to go the other way towards Ellesmere. Cruising back to Llangollen on the Monday was much quieter but on the one way stretch I ran ahead with my mobile to let the crew know if it was clear. Goodness knows how you would manage without a phone or two-way radio!

  • Lovely video, we moor our boat near hurleston juntion so was lovely to see all the places that we cruise through.Did you cope ok with the narrow stretches on the llangollen?

  • I fancy living on one. But will they be connecting up all canals in wales and england? That would make it even better so we could all just wake up and travel from one town to the next one country to the next. maybe scotland too have they got connected canals?

  • Quite a few are connected - you can certainly do a circuit of England. If you google something like Black Prince Holidays they will have a canal map on their website. However, I'm pretty sure the canals in Scotland aren't connected to any in England.

  • So glad you liked it. We loved our narrowboat holiday and are thinking of doing it again next year, maybe the Monmouth and Brecon canal.

  • i have traveled on llangollen canal with a narrowboat and it is so great, and this movie made me so glad because it's exactly where i was. IT'S GREAT!!!!
