  • I liked the first couple shots, but the rest were really quite bland.

  • Lol watching this again, it looks like it would be an opening to a lifetime movie xD

  • This was a really nice test, but what would actually boost up the cinematic feel to it would be to render it in 24fps. Trust me it really does lol o_o

  • @shapie333 Thanks, the lenses vary in price. We have for sale on our vid-atlantic website. This lens is also available there now too and comes with a clamp and front filter step ring. Very rare for anamorphic lenses. Hope this helps. Thanks again.

  • What do you use to keep the cam steady? :)

  • @Felorah In this video we used the indislider plus from indifocus. Its a great slider.

  • HALO!

  • isnt this the music used on the aprentise?

  • @goldenguy12345 not sure about the aprentise or what that is, but the music is from the movie "American Beauty". Thanks for watching!

  • @VidAtlantic fair enough :) what anamorphic lens did you use?

  • this video still sends chills down my spine!! it is amazing!!

  • @Homersloftflims Thanks! Sometimes its those videos that are shot and edit in minutes (literally) that have most impact. I was floored when I saw how awesome it was working with Anamorphic lenses on DSLRs. There's no going back for us!!!!

  • this looks like its shot at 60fps. if so, why not 24p if you are going for the cinematic look with the anamorphic adapter?

  • @lovekyordie15 No 60p on the Canon 5D Mark II. Also it was way before the 24p firmware update so we were forced to only shoot in 30p. But 30p is fine with us as the progressive property still looks filmlike. And then we usually conform it to 24p and playback in 24p if we shoot in 30 or 60 anyway.

  • @VidAtlantic ahh i see now, oct 2009, that was definitely a while back. but it still looks good, there is a definitely noticable difference, but the slider and the adapter mixed with a higher fps almost looks surreal, like a "better than real life" view on things. nicely done.

  • great

  • You have a slider? I will build a fallow focus w/ cables..

  • @viniciuspedrozo yes we used a slider

  • I need streched movie in lab? My anamorphic is not so cool

  • @viniciuspedrozo No, it was done Sony Vegas. Now I use CS5.

  • How song it is?

  • @viniciuspedrozo Thomas Newman - "By any other Means" from the movie American Beauty.

  • beautiful shots. really, about the nicest anamorphic for the 5DMKII that I've seen.

Question: what adapter do you use to attach the 135 FD to your 5DMKII? I presume with an optical correction glas in it? I have a FD 135mm 2.5 S.C and want to use it for my 5DMKII but don't know which adapter. The glass is supposed to make the quality less, but it doesn't show in your video!

  • @palomine55 Thanks! I just used a cheapo EOS to FD Converter from eBay ($40). And yes, it has corrective glass but you dont see any major quality loss at f3.5. The wider your iris, the more blurry it begins to look, so stay at f2.8 or higher.

  • @VidAtlantic thank you so much for your quick reply! I'm reading all posts from the anamorphic adapter thread at cinema5D (I'm at page 11/119. Still a LOT to read!)

Thank you for your assistance, Levi

  • While the range of view is outstanding, the letterbox is WAAAAAAAAAYYY to big for YouTUbe or really any other online medium. Was that the lenses doing or was that done in editing?

  • @SeanFilms It was both a lens and post doing...the lenses stretch it to 2x and I couldve cropped it a bit to make it less wide and standard 2.4:1 ratio, but we squeezed it down to the regular 2x in post.

  • How do you upload as a widescreen?

  • @Frontstreet25 for this clip we did 1920x1080 2x anamorphic pixel ratio. But now we export in square pixel ratio using 1920x810 or 1920x720 or 1920x540 depending on which anamorphic lenses was used.

  • So, can you get a step-up ring for the 52mm lens clamp to fit the Canon kit lens with a thread of 58mm?

  • @royalrexford Yes you can use a 58mm-52mm step down ring, or you can order the clamp with a 58mm version instead of the 52mm. Both are available.

  • @VidAtlantic I want to use my kit lenses, but I do have a 50mm 1.8 that I'd use as well. Does adding a step down ring degrade the quality of the image, because you are adding a greater gap between your anamorphic lens and your kit lens, which would be a better buy? The kit lenses have 58mm, and I'd probably use them mostly, should I just get that one and get a step ring to 52mm?

  • @flintloveless adding step rings wont do anything to the quality, so you can use a lens that has 67mm, 58mm, 55mm or 52mm and use step rings. But the clamp actually has both a 58mm step ring and a 52mm step ring already attached so you wont need anything additional if those are the 2 sizes you need.

  • @VidAtlantic "But the clamp actually has both a 58mm step ring and a 52mm step ring already attached so you wont need anything additional if those are the 2 sizes you need."

It will not attach to my 58mm kit lens like you said. It appears to be too large. How do we solve this problem?

  • hey, nice vid! whats the music at the beginning called?

  • @Kentiapalme Thanks! Not sure. I think its called "By any other name" by Thomas Newman from the American Beauty motion picture soundtrack

  • Hi there I'm really impressed by the image provided by anamorphic lenses especially the types of things Nolan attained in the Dark Knight by using this type of lens. I would like to create something similar with my Sanyo HD 2000 (I have a Letus mini so that I can use 35mm lenses) how would i go about buying a lens and fitting it on to my camera and how much money would it cost me. Thanks in advance!!!

  • @MrBenrey Thanks! Well first you can buy an Anamorphic projection lens on eBay (or sometime from us as we have a few extras from time to time). Then you will need a clamp/bracket that will mount the anamorphic lens in front of your photo lens and thats pretty much it! You need to focus both lenses to get your subject in focus, but its a lot of fun shooting with these! We sell the bracket that has 52mm filter threads that will attach to you photo lenses. check the vid-atlantic site!

  • @VidAtlantic What's the difference between a regular anamorphic lens and a projection lens? Also how much do these cost on average?

  • @thefilmjock No difference really. The trick is to find projection lenses that are shorter and wider so that your photo lens field of view can shoot through it without vignetting from the anamorphic lens. They range fro $50 to $3000 on eBay.

  • @MrBenrey You can find them on eBay and sometimes we sell them on our site. Also we sell the clamp that will attach the anamorphic lens to your photographic lens on our site. They lenses range in price from about $100 to $3000 on eBay and other places. I hope this helps!

  • What did the dimensions for this video come to when you pulled the image out in Post production? And what aspect Ratio was the lens you used? I've just been trying to figure out how to come to 2.35 aspect ratio when filming in 1920x1080, and it keeps ending up a lot wider. Just wondering if you could fill me in on that.

    I appreciate it.

  • @BigBlobProductions The lens was a 2x so It came out to 1920x540 in post which is very wide at a 2.66:1 ratio. So you will need to crop a bit of the left and right side to get a more proper 2.4 or 2.35 ratio. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

  • Why not just letterbox in post instead of paying so much for an anamorphic lens?

  • @MichaelFrymus There actually is a massive difference between just cropping and actually using an anamorphic lens. One big difference is the vertical light bending and effecting the out of focus areas. It looks like vertical smearing and we've seen it in movies our whole lives and have always associated with film. The last major difference is the fact that when you crop, you loose lots of data. When you shoot with an anamorphic lens, you utilize the entire sensor / imager. I hope this info helps

  • @MichaelFrymus

what would you rather do. Cut off from the top and bottom, or extend to the sides? Think about it man.

  • Where did you learn all this stuff about cameras and lenses. I'm an amateur photographer and I am curious and eager to learn more about all these things. I am really interested in film making as well and want to know how to produce quality like this. If you or any one could provide me with a source maybe even and online source, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you soo much

  • does the anamorphic lens achieve that desired depth of field?

  • them... for my gl2 I need one but it's too expensive . So you should buy one on ebay at $400 used.

  • One of the best pieces I have seen in terms of pure expressive shooting. Very smart choices of blockings and foreground elements and subtle sound just under the music. Fantastic use of underexposure and CC. I think you would enjoy a japanese filmed named "Tony Takitani". Like you piece it is quiet and meditative. It is a good story and well shot, the camera almost always moves through a seen and it is as if we are watching the characters from a distance. I wish you continued success.

  • how did you get such smooth shots? also, what song is this?

  • @HellaBased

I think it is from the soundtrack of from a certain movie with Kevin Spacey. Name of the movie should not be mentioned here of course.

  • very very good. people can learn from what they dont know

  • Can please somebody explane me what i need to buy... for my CANON 5D mark 2 to get desime result of vide shooting? I red some descriptions but i stiil cant get it... how its work... how to combine and so on! Please help me!

  • @serhio22 You need a wide enough anamorphic attachment lens to fit in front of your regular photographic lens. Then you focus both lenses. Thats pretty much it, bt finding the good anamorphic lenses these days can be difficult and expensive. I hope this helps!

  • Very nice!

What did you use to edit this?

  • SUPER * NICE

  • just amazing.

  • holy eff this is nice footage. really clear crisp picture. very nice.

  • holy cumshots !!!! this is just insanely amazing!!! i have to get one... how do u get the lens flares?... do these lenses work on rebels? i have a t1i and i really like want this lense please get back to me =D

  • Its really amazing film look.

'I dont understand how you can use Sankor lens together with FD. Can you please explain to me?

    Thanks in advance:)

  • I had to tape the Sankor in front of a 135mm Canon FD lens. Then I focus both lenses on the subject. It's a bit of a pain but the results are well worth it and it's fun to experiment like that.

  • how did you get the focus so cool looking? That was emotional, even though it really wasn't emotional. Where did you get the background music from?

  • Thanks I used a special anamorphic lens for this. I recently sold it, but I have another one. The music came from the movie American Beauty

  • Thanks a lot, how much do anamorphic lenses go for?

  • @VidAtlantic

where can you buy those lenses?

  • @Kentiapalme on ebay is where we find them.

  • @VidAtlantic

I cannot find them! please send me a link! :)

  • Jiii, this is amazing!!! :) I want to buy an anamorphic lens!!! :)

  • hey, what is the name of the music used? I've heard it somewhere but I don't remember where. Please reply.

  • Its from the movie american beauty by thomes newman

  • Hi, how did you unsqueeze/decompress the video? Did you use final cut? Thanks

  • Its very easy in post. I use Sony Vega as well a premiere cs4, but FCP should be the same. Just simply change the aspect ratio from 1 square to 2.0.

  • i love it

  • Nice.

The only suggestion i could make is not to overexpose that much. It screams DV video. Instead maybe record at a lower contrast and edit later. This is a common look of 5D which can be improved by careful shooting and editing.

  • I love this video, it looks so amazing. I just graduated from school and I'm going to buy the Canon HF200 but for everything to look right I will need the EnCinema 35mm adaptor and the Canon FD 135 mm lens to make it look kinda like this right? I'm guessing from watching a bunch of vids that the anamorphic lens makes the picture seem wider but with a narrower height, right? Thanks for posting these videos I can't wait to get everything now.

  • Yes, the EnCinema 35 adapter gives a very film like look, bu this video was shot with a 5D and not the adapter. The Anamorphic lens bends the light to give an even more cinematic look. To see the EnCInema with an Anamorphic lens check out our Rock Creek Park video that was up'd a few days after this video. Thanks!

  • Hey so I checked out Rock Creek, but It doesn't have the same feel and look that this video has. What lenses would you suggest to use with the HF20 to get this kind of look? Thanks again

  • Definitely use a 35mm adapter like the EnCinema. The difference in the video is mainly due to the cameras being so different as well as different lighting..it was almost night vs day so it will never look exactly alike. But the EnCinema 35 dof adapter will get it looking somewhat close for little cost.

  • Sweet thanks so much. I can't wait to go play now lol

  • This is beautiful. Did you film on the Canon HF100???

  • Thanks! No it was shot on the Canon 5D, but I know I can get similar results with the EnCinema 35mm adapter on the Canon HF100 or HV30. We'll do some tests to try for something just as nice.

  • yes, please do some tests for the HV30! I was hoping on getting one, as well as a 35mm adapter. But I dont know how it would look
