why do people talk shit about shredding? not ALL of it lacks emotion. just cause a particular guitarist uses a lot of sweeping in his solos doesnt mean it lacks emotion. imo, if you can "shred" while still producing emotion, then you are obviously very talented. one example would be the sweep solo at the end of seize the day. but anyways, john's a beast and definately one of my favprte guitarists.

@XVIBenedetto Like the other kid said, sweep picking, tapping and all that shit are for unskilled guitarists. Anybody can shred like crazy and do all of those things, all you have to do is practice. But playing with emotion and soul is something that can't be taught, you have to want to be able to do it. This video isn't a good example, but John is the most spiritual guitar player ever.

@XVIBenedetto he maybe got the techinque level of a child (i don't think that really) but in the end he experiments with guitar more than a super-fast-techique guitarrist, like vai, petrucci, malmsteen, etc. He cares about make sounds, make beatiful music, and he cares about what it's good for the song, not to show abilities and speed and how many notes he can made in one second. @023132 When you use sweep picking, you're playing a chord, playing it note by note. That's a fast arpeggio, and I'm sure John doesn't do that. But hey! He doesn't need to do sweep picking to be a kickass player!

@vieri031 John totally knows how to sweep pick, he just chooses not to use it. Before RHCP he auditioned to be in Frank Zappa's band, but didnt do it once he found out that Zappa didnt allow drugs. Steve Vai was with Frank Zappa at some point. So think about it. He was about to do Steve Vai's job. He obviously knows how to sweep.

@619mikeg I'm not good enough to sweep pick yet but I know for a fact those 2 songs can be played without it. Snow isn't sweeping anyway because the strings picked are not in a straight pattern. He uses a very fast hammer pull off and picks the rest individually.

It's the same technique as the solo in Dani California. Fast picking on only two strings and hammer-ons and pull-offs while using a wah-wah pedal.

I'm not sure if you mean 'How DO you sweep pick' or 'How do YOU sweep pick' but I suppose the answer would be pretty much the same! There should be plenty of lessons on youtube. I actually got a webcam today and was considering doing a vid based on the text lesson that I learned from. To get you started though, start with 3 string shapes, play very slowly and to a metronome. If you need a metronome, there is a website which provides one if you search 'online metronome' in google.
