@DevonHomeBrew 20 years or so ago you could use a public house at 14 and drink beer or cider with a meal. A local pub served small meals so the kids could have a couple of beers without having to have an escort. I believe it was due to the working age, but it appears to have been abandoned and a child can't even have a bottle of shandy when accompanied, at least in the pubs I'ne been to in the last 5 years. The pub is now a strange environment to many.
