Previn's jazz-influenced score and Fleming's bluesy delivery are just perfect. one of the best things she's ever done. it works its magic every time I hear it.
I dislike this as an opera - the music is in no way any more showing of progress than any musical. Previn is more of a conductor than a composer and I'd rather watch any musical of Sondheim's any day than this half-opera.
I thought I was the only fan of this opera. I saw it when it was originally broadcast and loved it. I was able to get the CD for nearly nothing at a used store since it was so much maligned. Glad to see people paying it some attention.
Sure Pavarotti, but he never played Stanley in A Streetcar Named Desire. And Pavarotti did lose weight for roles. You loved concert Pavarotti, opera Pavarotti was a different matter.
I'm absolutely loving this piece. Previn is nothing short of a genius. And Fleming is just amazing, as usual. She filled every part of this aria with colour. Many criticise her for the influence of jazz on her singing. I think that makes her singing all the more enjoyable. Her interpretations are always true and unique. Her control over her voice is almost unearthly. She harly ever goes wrong with anything she does.
I just read the play for the first time, and then watched Renee's interpretation on the few youtube clips that there are. WOW. Could there be a better operatic representation of Blanche DuBois?!? I think not! Brava, Renee!
God that was good!!! She really needs to to do this entire production at the MET I would say 2 or 3 yrs from now. Its such beautiful music and it appeals to a large audience considering how famous the story and its text are.
her singing does have a jazzy feel, but that makes it palatable to a wider audience. you can't say it isn't b-e-a-utiful though. Can't say it, if you are being honest.
This is tremendous singing... tremendous! I do hear the current mannerisms that she has, and I can understand why some would be put off by them, but this singing is divine.
Just a few things I guess...such as the intrusion of vocal tics on her performances of late. The lack of taste in the lighter music (that awful Somewhere Over the Rainbow.) Mind you, she does seem to be remedying some of those things recently. I guess I fell in love with Fleming when the "I Want Magic" CD was released back in '98, which this aria was on. Such great performances on there.
The CD is really wonderful... I was most interested in this opera because I am the biggest fan of A Streetcar Named Desire (the play) that's ever lived (in my mind at least:o). It's really lovely singing throughout and a live recording!
Sigh.

Sure, maybe not so much Mozart, but ever heard of someone called "Pavarotti"?

@Bigguns222
And as much as I loved Pavarotti he would NOT have settled to A) be second billing under Renee and B) play such a small supporting role.
