Thank you for posting. Our son started sparring this year and his instructor was talking about some of the kids going to some of the competitions. At least now I know what they would be like. All I know is my son has a LONG ways to go yet by watching this. Of course he did just turn 6 last week.
You're welcome... Thank you for your comment. My son was 11 when this video was shot. He had been training for about three years. Your son will get there. Just keep taking him and he'll do great.
@jcbrew67 I just wanted to update you that we actually took my son to a couple competions so far this year. He took 2nd at the D-lux Charity Challenge (his first competition) and then didn't place this month at the Grand Rapids Open Karate Tournament. (Thankfully he's in the 6 & under catagory)
That's awesome that he got 2nd - and at his 1st tournament - that had to make him feel great... The D-lux tournaments are great - we enjoy going to them.
Way to go dude, I've done a bit of competition but not for some time now. When I did the most annoying thing was the ones who would blow you off at the start of a match. Nice job teaching him a lesson!
I love Uechi Ryu, no offense to other styles. To each his own, and as long as you know how to utilize what you have learned it makes all the difference. You can get a black belt in a style for knowing the katas and so forth, but get spanked in tournys and actually having to defend yourself. I like when dojo's make sure that the karate ka know how to utilize what they are being taught.
Okay - real quick - don't have a lot of time to "chat" with you... He is not doing a kata. These are kids are beginner karatekas - so cut them some slack. I tell him that in these types of fights he needs to work on his techniques a little more - practice on new things... and about damage... you're a fool - you want some kid to break another kid's ribs just to prove they have power. Trust me when I say this - he has powerful kicks... He's kicked me in the stomach many times and it hurts.
And yes you are right... this is not real fighting - it's kids intermediate tournament sparring... and it is basically tag. So, please don't think this IS karate - because it's not. These are basically beginner kids going out and doing their best... I applaud them for that - it sure beats sitting on the couch watching TV or videos on YouTube...
I think all styles are good... Any is better then sitting on the couch playing video games...So, whatever style you take - enjoy and keep it up. @Alex - you are absolutely right - this is what I tell my son all the time. He learns real fighting doing his katas (forms). @amgargia - thanks
hey SUFI194189, because it is point sparring, not continuous in TKD. the 1st fighter 2 score a point, the fight is called 2 a brake. try fighting in it, i bet you'll have a real hard time competing in it? Karate is known 4 its speed and power, TKD is known 4 its kicks, i know i trained n both styles and i like Karate better. nothing against TKD, i trained n it 4ever, i just love using my hands alot more than kicking.
Yeah true, ill have a hard time cause once i get hit im trained to do a quick counter attack before your opponent can return to his/her guard stance (fighting position). TKD is known for its speed just a bit too but mostly for its spins/kicks. I like tkd just cause u learn more bout your legs then u really knew about. Its a great and effective way to keep your enemy at a distance.
What the heck. Why does he stop them every time the kid gets a point? Hell i mean i practice TKD and we spar for 1 hardcore minute. the only time we stop is if we get penalized or we get knocked out of the ring
Hey ya thats me other kid i spared your son 2 years back agian and they pentaty me for hard contact when i didnt

This comment has received too many negative votes show
THIS IS NOT FIGHTING!! OR SPARRING AT THAT!
THIS IS PLAYING TAG WITH YOUR FEET!!
HORRIBLE STANCES, NO POWER.
YEAH THERE IS SPEED, BUT WHEN NO DAMAGE OR DISTRACTION (setup for another strike) CAN BE CAUSED, ITS A WASTED STRIKE!!! F - A - I - L
