we did this whole musical at our school. it was great. a lot of things messed up though. like the golden agg broke and things like that. it just made it even more funny because we had to add lib to make up for it.
I think it's so wonderful how two of the weakest characters who couldn't make up their own minds were guiding the two strongest characters... so sweet... What a wonderful play! I was in the orchestra pit for this-- flute and piccolo... my sister was the stepmother! :)
I love this musical! I always cry at the end. It's just such a powerful story and funny too! I've been trying to convince my director to do this one next year, but he never seems to listen. Hopefully next year!
Our school did this musical three years ago. I never saw it, though. Although, I was even more interested when I discovered that it was a Stephen Sondheim production. Sweeney Todd (the film)was what I saw first. It's excellent, as is this musical.
What do you mean? Rent conveys a message of licing life at the fullest, along with plenty of other messages.
But, I DO agree with you that musicals should have meaning. Poppy little cheese-fest musicals are fun, but they pale in comparison to shows like these.
Well, originally, fairy tales were told to distract children from the harsh lives that they were living, thus violence was not quite so shocking to them. However, in OUR society, I believe children should be spared of violent and morbid themes until later on in life. Then again, that's just my opinion.
I disagree. By listening to the children's version I felt cheated but subconcioulsy it made me feel ugly because all the beautiful girls end up with princes and really puts them down and makes them think about what they don't have.
Personally I prefer the violent versions because it makes the fairy tale more realistic in a sense. In this world we do have violence and the first time I read a violent 1 I felt... better about myself (too long 2 explain). I also liked it bcos of wat u said.
Plus, it wouldn't be satisfying without the final numbers, and there would be plot holes if you did JUST those songs, so u defiantly should do act 2, just do a little...censorship
I most definitely agree with you... The Brothers Grimm definitely collected a lot of rather morbid tales... But you learn something from them at least ^_^
Very true. also alot of the old nursery rhymes are violent too. There is this band called the Tiger Lillies and they take old songs and stories and make them a bit more morbid... But they were used to teach children lessons... Just like alot of kids are afraid of the boogeyman... same concept
this musical is hackin amazing this is my first time wtching it an di am inlove and i am so hackin exited that we are actually do tis at my school! also i love the part when Jack goes "I want a friend and a PET!" lmao that was so funny! I AM INLOVE WITH THIS MUSICAL! AMAZING!
This is a brilliant musical, and I love it, but I must say it is very very very dark! The first act is all happy and cheery, but act two is so so so dark and has a lot of dark overtones. Still great though.
dang that sucks i miss the bakers wife because they went though all of that just to have a kid now she dies and the kid has no mom but also its sad when she comes back as a spirt comment on my page if u agree

okayy i love thiss show but likee my thing is instead of making it partss of the show why not just make it one it would of made life easier... but its good anyway
no one is alone makes me want to cry, my eyes well up with tears every time I hear it. Alot of people don't like the second act because it makes everything sad but thats how life is, it's perfect and then it gets sad, no matter what you do. But there is always happy times agianst the bad, it makes life liveable.
They didn't say it because the giant came, and if they were real people and you were with them you wouldn't continue your song if you were going to die.
This truly tells people how we truly are, imperfect. we all need to learn we are human, we are people who can make mistakes, as the shadows cannot be cast without sun. Truly, we are more like the characters than we know. Damn that was a long post.
I kind of knew that the baker and Cinderella would end up together, and that Jack and Little Red would, too. And that was the first time I ever saw this.
too bad Into the Woods had to compete against Phantom of the Opera for the Tonys-ITW should have won best musical (the 2002 revival is, at best, in my opinion, a make-up for not awarding the original production-it looks like cheap high school production! Unlike this original beauty).

I have the same feeling about adapting a certain musical to film-for me, its either Wicked or Jekyll & Hyde. My ideal leads for the two musicals would be Emma Watson and Natalie Portman for Glinda and Elphaba (Harry Potter and Star Wars united!) and Jamie Campbell Bower (Anthony in the Sweeney Todd movie) for Jekyll/Hyde. The latter may be more likely when he matures a few years, but the Wicked leads may be different, but you can't help dreaming, right?

Cinderella looks very pretty at 0:43 seconds. And Danielle Ferlands' (Little Red) teras are real in that scene. There must have been such emotion in the atmosphere.
It's funny at the end because some characters get more claps and cheers than the others. Like Little Red, the baker's wife, and the Witch got the most claps and cheers. Woot!
That usually happens for most shows. People clap more for the parts they see as "better" for whatever reasons they have. Plus Bernadette Peters is beyond amazing (the witch). Also the curtain call tends to be organized by part, going from smaller and/or less important roles up to the biggest/most important character.
there goes my perception of childhood fairytales haha how many people died? about 6 or 7? :| Sondheim is pure genius
