I've watched this video 7 times, and cried every time.
He was a great storm chaser. I admired his passion, his work, and him.
I can't judge him for suicide, but we have lost a truly valuable person. And I really wish I had a rewind button, and I wish I could somehow stop things.

Cont: weeks ago, I was out in my dead pasture (I'm near Houston, almost everything is dead still) and there wasn't a cloud in the sky but I looked up and said "Matt, I never knew you personally but I know your buds and we all miss you. If you hear me, please see if God can send us some rain." I thought I was dumb but as I was going in, I heard a distant rumble of thunder. There was only. 20%chance of rain. Later, it rained about an inch.

I miss Matt I never got to know him personally but it still brings tears to my eyes that he had to leave so young. I wish he could have gotten some help before he got so depressed.
He was-and still partially is-the inspiration for my novel's main character.
I'm friends with Sean, Brandon, Joel, and Reed and they still miss him (hell it's only been a little over a year) and you can hear it in their voices how much they'd give to have him back.
Trust me no matter how much help you get it can't fix things. Some depression like mine is crushing and no amount of treatment or therapy can help. It's not as simple as taking a tablet. Tablets do help but so many things like side affects of intolerance cause lots of problems. Many of my tablets leave me unable to function normally or make me feel ill. Thats the trade off with treatment. What life I do have is limited but I also know most people would not cope with the limited life I do have.
Tragic loss of a wonderfull man. People have no idea how bad depression is. I have had depression for over 22 years and I also have severe panic attacks and post traumatics stress disorder. I have thought about ending my life many times because of how bad my illnesses effect me every single day. My depression was brought on by a severe car accident theat left me at deaths door. I get treatment and help constantly. Matt may have also had help that no one knew about.
Matt Hughes will be greatly missed. I, for one, tremendously respect and appreciate his work and his contributions to the continuous efforts of storm chasers to help save lives and increase warning times. He was an amazing person and an extremely talented and passionate storm chaser, and I wish his family all the best. My heart goes out to his wife and two sons. May Matt Hughes rest in peace.

I have lived with depression for years. You can NEVER know why he did this or how he felt ,it's a personal struggle.I stay away from alcohol because it only intensifies the depression. wish he had done the same,but sometimes you hit the bottom so hard ,you reach for the bottle just to feel numb. Ok maybe you need to read up on the facts about the guy. He had alot more success than that, he managed to get TIV into the path of a tornado using a standard doppler radar which can be found online and his own experience. As for any suicide that ends in death is a success, as exaplained earlier, he died a week later, so the suicide failed, injuries caused by his sucide ATTEMPT later killed him.

Everything is just a distraction from it but its always there underneath so you can be really happy doing a particular thing one day but the very next, when a chance to kill yourself presents itself, you are tempted to take it.

It's sad to know he died, he was chasing storms with Sean Casey since his days with Doghouse, his death was from complications of an attempted suicide. He fatally wounded himself on May 12th, and was hospitalized shortly after. 12 days later, he died from his injury. RIP Matt Hughes.
I know they're trying to respect the family's privacy, but maybe if this program and others that have dealt with losses under similar circumstances could do more good by being open. The fact is those liable to commit suicide tend to suffer in silence, and if people were made aware, they might be better able to respond if someone they know is in a similar place. Politeness has its place, but it does little good to keep his death so neat and tidy, as if suicide doesn't happen to "normal" folk!
@minawa21 Thanks for your comment, a lot of us were really impacted when hearing of his death. I was stunned when Nathan Winthrow relayed the news to me several months ago. I have been chasing 3 years and have run across Matt twice. He was good at chasing even before he got to navigate the TIV. His videos are amazing. He will be missed by a lot of us.

It's so shocking to hear about things like this, like when Captain Phil from Deadliest Catch passed away, I was just shocked. I knew he'd had health problems, but it was so unexpected. Matt being gone...it's just so hard to believe. I know I'm going to watch old episodes and feel like he's still there, even though he's gone. It's just so shocking. RIP Matt, and congratulations on the intercept. You will be missed.
@Itsk0de I'd guess debris. The tornado would have to pass almost directly over you to get sucked up, but the debris it throws around can be lethal at a much greater range.
Huge props to Discovery Channel for handling this with class, and not turning it into a season-long "selling point" like they did with Captain Phil Harris.

Matt you my friend you are deeply missed and everytime I watch this it makes me cry to know that such a great human being is not with us anymore. i saw the thing on tv too and it is just sad to see some with good humor and excitement to pass a way. when i first saw the begin of the whole episode i drop evrything litterley i mean evry thing i had a water bottle in my hand and droped it after i read the paragraph in the begining. at first i did not believe it but then evry where i went it was on tv on the news abot the epidsode.
Notice the small white burst at 3:22. Perhaps that is Matt spirit coming down from heaven and landing on the shoulder of Sean to keep him and the other chasers safe. He will be sadly missed.
This just breaks my heart. Such a loss to the world, and I am so sad for his family and his Storm Chaser friends. Thank you Discovery for such a moving tribute to a great man. Love and prayers to all of you.

I know they're trying to respect the family's privacy, but maybe if this program and others that have dealt with losses under similar circumstances could do more good by being open. The fact is those liable to commit suicide tend to suffer in silence, and if people were made aware, they might be better able to respond if someone they know is in a similar place. Politeness has its place, but it does little good to keep his death so neat and tidy, as if suicide doesn't happen to "normal" folk!

@minawa21 Thanks for your comment, a lot of us were really impacted when hearing of his death. I was stunned when Nathan Winthrow relayed the news to me several months ago. I have been chasing 3 years and have run across Matt twice. He was good at chasing even before he got to navigate the TIV. His videos are amazing. He will be missed by a lot of us.

It's so shocking to hear about things like this, like when Captain Phil from Deadliest Catch passed away, I was just shocked. I knew he'd had health problems, but it was so unexpected. Matt being gone...it's just so hard to believe. I know I'm going to watch old episodes and feel like he's still there, even though he's gone. It's just so shocking. RIP Matt, and congratulations on the intercept. You will be missed.

@Itsk0de I'd guess debris. The tornado would have to pass almost directly over you to get sucked up, but the debris it throws around can be lethal at a much greater range.

Matt Hughes is one of my personal friends. I grew up with both Brandon and Matt. Matt you my friend you are deeply missed and everytime I watch this it makes me cry to know that such a great human being is not with us anymore. RIP Matt Hughes I just know your doing what you love and thats chasing storms in your other life.

My heart is breaking for Matt, his family,friends and his fellow chasers. I shed tears as I watched, may he rest in peace always. I as some others stated saw the orb while Sean was speaking. Matt is with them.

You people keep talking about the rumors of how he killed himself and so forth. Point is he's gone no matter what the cause. Our chasing community, his family and friends all lost someone so dearly and special and it can't be replaced. Only thing you can do is to open your hearts and eyes and protect those who need you.

My thoughts and prayers are with Matt and his family and friends and chasing partners. Matt lived his life doing what he loved, all of us could learn a lot from him. i saw the thing on tv too and it is just sad to see some with good humor and excitement to pass a way. when i first saw the begin of the whole episode i drop evrything litterley i mean evry thing i had a water bottle in my hand and droped it after i read the paragraph in the begining. at first i did not believe it but then evry where i went it was on tv on the news abot the epidsode.

Notice the small white burst at 3:22. Perhaps that is Matt spirit coming down from heaven and landing on the shoulder of Sean to keep him and the other chasers safe. He will be sadly missed.
