  • Although your grandfather was a german, he fought bravely through the war for his country and you have that to be proud of for your family. god bless

  • The accoustics were fantastic and your pipes tuned well. That is the best vid of this tune I've seen and heard.God bless. Your Grandfather would have been proud.

  • Good - it is a lament - to the fallen - and whether you knew him you have done him proud. 4 mates lost but not forgotten - would be honoured. Thank you, the lament will always be so,

  • I would never have thought of this tune as a tribute to a fallen German soldier but it is just perfect. It is beautiful, heartbreaking and a wonderful lament for your grandfather and all the fallen. Well chosen, well played, Andreas and very, very well done.

  • Some want to know about what reeds you're playing, mate. I'd rather know about the grandfather you honour with your wonderful playing. Tell us about him.

  • Hi,

thx a lot for your comment!

I´m playing on this video a set of R.T. Sheperd Pipes with an Sheperd Polypenco Chanter and Sheperd Cane Chanterreed and Sheperd SM 90 on the Drones!

    Best Regards from Germany

    Andreas

  • For mine as well...13th Battalion (Royal Highlanders of Canada), CEF

  • This is becoming one of my all time favorite - thank you playing so beautifully.

  • Wonderful.

  • my father wanted amazing grace at his after hearing this he wants this instead. personlly i do ythink myself worth for the pipes to be played at mein funeral

  • Brilliant, I'm british and tearful after listening to this, Thank you.

  • Hauntingly beautiful!

  • This can even reduce an Englishman such as myself to tears!

  • My Father died thirteen years ago today, and a piper played this at his funeral. I still can't listen to this without it tearing my heart out, even after all this time.

I still miss and love you, Dad.

  • Respect !!!

  • @zzllen That's the best comment I've seen so far. Great job.

  • A fitting tribute. One of the most haunting piping tunes there is, no doubt.

  • very original version. I like it. My father probabley fought against your grandfather. Honour to them both.

  • Hi Andreas,

super Video. Eine Kirche ist der optimale Ort, um Dudelsack zu spielen!

  • My Great Grandfather was a greengrocer from Aberdeen and died at Passchendale with the HLI. His name is on the Menim Gate.

Nice work. This needs to happen for the poor gits returning from Afghanistan right now.

  • If your grandfather was a German soldier during WW II then, despite the despicable Naxzi regime and if he fought honorably and did his duty to his Nation then he was an honorable man. Governments come and go, but an honorable warrior is an honorable warrior. The Pipes are brave music for brave men. And brave men - truly brave - wil always rally for freedom.

  • @badflamenco Well said.

As you rightly say, this was done for honoured opposition in WW1 & 2

  • You played with great technique and tone, but remember to watch your grips. Also, this lament in particular should be played no faster than 40 beats per minute. Great job with the second part. I have heard many pipers play this so that it sounds as a huge mistake, but you made it work well.

  • Beautiful. My grandad was a Seaforth WWI. (injured at Beamul Hamel 1916)

  • Forgiven xxxx

  • im half scottis aswell not a lie and my family tree cancan be traced back to william wallace

  • How could you be? Wallace didn't have any children.

You also apparently can't spell Scottish.

    Love, a true Scot.

  • @marnotica Apparently his family also liked to dance!!

  • booyah!

  • @marnotica

Wallace died before he was middle ages, who knows if he had children or not, were you there? please tell us

  • Never again.

  • beautiful rendition. I an an American of Scottish and German descent. During WW!I My father was in The US Coast Guard, his cousins in the Royal Navy and Highlander Brigades and my mothers cousins and brothers were in various German service. All were victims.

    Best wishes

    NRM

  • Came upon this from the lyrics of "The Green Fields Of France"

Did the band play the last post in chorus,

Did the pipes play the "Flowers of the Forest"?

    -

As a part Scot, I found this incredibly Tragic!

    My epiphany was Horrific!

    Truly sad.

  • Your posting is very unusual. I am impressed by the quality rendition of one of my favourite laments. I am half scottish and my Grandfather was killed in the 1st World War and my father in the 2nd World War. It seems so sad that Anglo Saxons should have entered into two such sad conflicts.

    Best regards,

    Donald Johnstone

  • Beautiful and Haunting, just as it should be...the ancestors hear this...German, British...its all the same nation, get rid of the Politics and Egos...Rest he in peace

  • This is an excellent rendition. If you are indeed the original performer of this particular arrangement, then my congratulations to you. You really were able to capture the very essence of this song perfectly. Well done.

  • My Father and your Grandfather may even have met.....across the lines.....who knows.

  • God Bless, and Remember

  • a wee bit o' tape on the F and play in a room with better acoustics, then I'll bump the 4/5 up to a 5/5

  • What? What better acoustics could you want than a cathedral?

  • Respect mate this sounds awful and timeless. MyGrandfather served on the eastern front as a pilot. Keep on the good work.

    Greets from germany

  • a fair rendition. your grandad should be proud of you.

  • very very good

  • Hi Andreas

After returning from the Eastern front to his homeland in ruins, he came to America. this tribute makes me remember him and his stories...Thanks Andreas. As a fellow piper, I can say this tune fits the memorial very well.

My father is a piper from Scotland although we live in Canada. My favorites that Dad will play for me are difficult tunes. Masons Apron and Itchy Fingers. Can you play these? • One of my Favorite tunes!!! Salute to your Grandfather!! May he Rest in Peace and Honour.

  • Thanks a lot my friend!!!

Kindest regards and greetings from Germany

  • Beautifully done! I really loved the way you handled the grace notes. To my mind this the the ultimate dirge ever written.

Too bad that this tune is nearly forgotten in the US, but that is largely the fault of the the Royal Scott Grenadier Guards!

  • dirge its a lament and officially known all over the comonwealth as a lament and what kind of regiment is the Royal Scott Grenadier Guards

  • @Enjoi1950 Yes, Dirge/Lament & it tis rooted in Scot (not 2 T's) Folklore n Tradition. You'll find fallen Royal Grenadier Guards (even today), but there's no Royal Scot Grenadier Guards!

If you're speaking of some US bagpipe band, that have forgotten Warpipes, Highland, Uilleann or Zampogna pipes history then you're right!

In Medieval times n the WW's it was played for fallen Scotsmen. It's the Official Canadian Lament and after Bogle's 70's tune, others the World over have adopted it! Peace!

  • Very well done. You play in respect and memory of all soldiers HP. The tune I believe was written by a Canadian and played on Rememberance Day ever since. Beautiful setting very fitting. Thanks for this.

    Best wishes, Guten Tag

    Alex

  • If by "written by a Canadian" you meant written by a Scot. "Flowers of the Forest" is a lament written after the Battle of Flodden between the Scots and the Brits in 1513 for the 12,000 (give or take) Scots that perished. I think the melody was recorded in the 17th century with lyrics added in the mid 18th cent.

  • I stand corrected, my information came from my old pipe major, he had a tendency to get it wrong and had to step down, I looked it up after reading your comment. I guess I should have said...such a nice tune, could have been written by a Canadian. Cheers ;)

  • Thanks!!!!!

  • I have never heard it before but my Dad loves it

    Beautiful memory thanx so much

  • I think Its great that people from all over the world love the bagpipes good on you for learning I am from Scotland and I play the pipes too good playing and thanks for adding me as a friend :)

  • Your playing of "The flowers of the forest" is a fine tribute to your Grandfather, and all those who died in battle Sir. Thank you.

  • What a pleasant surprise to REMEMBER the fallen included so many young German lives. What a waste? I served in Germany for 10 years with BAOR. Mulheim an der Ruhr, Rheindahlen JHQ, Bunde, and Soest. Loved every minute. Well done & kind regards. John McDonald.

  • This is a beautiful piece of music. This was played on the bagpipes at my Uncle's funeral and there wasn't a dry eye in the church. Fantastic!!

  • Thanks a lot for your comment!

I played this song at the funeral of my mother in law and right at this moment the people began to cry! It was an very special moment!

  • I absolutely LOVE the bagpipes, and you play them excellently! I hope bagpipes are played in heaven, because I could listen to them forever. :-)

    Natalie

I hope that the Angels in heaven are playing the harp too!

    Have a good times!

    Andreas

  • My father was Commissioner to the Chief of Clan Kincaid (Madame Arabella Kincaid of Kincaid) for many years. He educated our family on our Scottish (an a bit Irish) heritage. During his life we attended many games and functions. I grew to associate the skirl o' the pipes with him. He died May 2 2007 and was "Piped Home" by Sgt McGann of the Virginia State Police Honour Guard. I appreciate your offering here. Your's aye, Jeff Kincaid

  • Thanks a lot for your comment!!!!!

    Greetings from Germany

    Kindest regarding

    Andreas

  • Thank you for sharing this beautiful tribute to your Grandfather. Well done.

  • Very nice song and playing :). I just love hearing the bagpipes! Maybe you aren't the one to ask, but how hard is it to play bagpipes compared to other instruments, the piano for example? On the piano, you can learn the scale in a couple minutes and play simple tunes after a few days, but I would think it would be harder to play bagpipes. Like, is it hard to blow all that air, and it wouldn't be too hard for me, being 14 years old? Well, really enjoyed hearing you play!

  • At scotland, they are 10 year old kids that play the bagpipes very well!

It´s possible for beginers to play the bagpipes with an very easy (soft) Chanterreed!

I think! When you woul like to learn it realy with your heart, than you will play some simple bagpipe tunes after 4 weeks!

Kindest regards! and greetings from Germany!

    Andreas

  • Thank you very much for the encouragement! I'm sure with lots of practice I could learn to play a little on the bagpipes very soon. My only problems would be finding a teacher and enough money, but I think those can be found!

  • Thanks for your comment!

It´s very interesting! The Flowers of the Forrest is an very nice tune and makes me allways feel very special!

Kindest regards and greetings from Germany!

    Andreas

  • Written to remember The Scots who fell with King James on Flodden Field 1513. 14,000 died in a few hours. Alba gu brath.

  • A lovely tribute to your grandfather.

  • Thanks a lot my friend!!!!

    Cheers or slainte!

    Andreas

  • I agree, you should be proud of your grandfather. Most of the german troops did not know what kind of suffering the einsatztruppen brought on the country they did just conquer. Second of all in that time it was anyone´s duty to protect and serve your country, your grandfather had the misfortune that a psycho was running his at that time. A lot of people were trampling to erase the great injustice of the treaty of Versailles, and right they were. It was very injust. Highlandpiper, be proud at him

  • Should a grandson feel any less pride for his grandsires service, just because he was serving the losing side?

Either Armed service is something to honor or its not. It doesnt matter if you are American or geman, Israeli or Syrian, Irish or English...

  • It´s true!!!

It doesn´t matter which side or which country a soldier was fighting!

The pain was on every side! And the dead doesn´t ask for any side or country!

They all had Family who honor them!

  • I am no racist!

  • Jeffaz1971

You assume that this man's grandfather(and possibly he himself)was a racist because he was in the German Army. Those citizens were drafted and had no choice under threat of firing squad. Hitler was an evil man whom deceived many with his magniloquent speeches, just as many islamic Imams are doing today. My dad fought in WWII on the U.S. side. I served during Vietnam. No man takes pleasure in war.

  • I agree his grandfather was told to serve his country and he did so the cause was wrong and evil but that still doesnt diminish the fact that he is a patriot who served his nation No one can blame a man who fights for his home and family if a war is unjust its not your fault for doing your duty and serving its the fault of those in power who sent you to fight

  • My Grandfather was born in Humfeld and my Grandmother in Detmold. Great tribute!

  • Hi mate, my own grandfather was British soldier in ww2.

To the better times we have and the memory of the fallen on both sides.

    Well played, too. :)

  • I´m thinking the Bagpipes are an great Instument of war and for soldiers, so I thougt it´s an good ideear to make this video and thinking about my grandfather and his time as a soldier at the 2. WW!

I was thinking about the war and the very bad times!

I´m a German and i was at the german Army for about 4 years! I never will feel so much hurt like my Grandfather at his time as a Soldier!

Only told that my Grandfather was a German Soldier, because he was make me very proud!

  • Well done. Your Grandfather would have been proud of you, just as my Grandfather was of me. Keep it up. All the Best to you.

  • Hi. I'm wondering why you're telling us your grandfather was German and also wonder where the connection is between the scot in you and your grandfather ? You play the bagpipes beautifully don't ever allow anyone to stop you.
