I think Atlantis existed probably even hundreds of years before final destruction, and it suffered many destruction before final one finished it. It is possible that some Atlanteans were living and working outside their island, in some other cities or countries, and when their island was gone they were the only who knew history of their own civilisation. They passed that knowledge, or they hid it somewhere.
