So what is that thing on your left arm, is it game-related?

These are elbow protection pads. If you make many movements with the stick & throttle it all comes down on a small point of your elbows which will hurt after a while. Next to that, when I fly formation lead in Lock On the pads prevent "arm locks" while pulling, as the pads slide over the chair without any friction (plastic on plastic).
