  • What about the responsiblity of the parents? How easy to drop them off and hope for the best, they created this mess now deal w/ this!!!!!!!

  • Do you think Newt Gingrich gives a shit about these people?!

  • this is so saaad :(

  • You may not find this type of "filfth" in US institutions for intellectual/developmental disabilities but the "dehumanization" still exists. Watch the documentary Forgotten Lives from Texas--- horrible. The very people trained and paid to care for these individuals are the ones that are abusing and neglecting them in state-operated institutions. It's our taxpayer dollars paying their salaries and the dysfunctional system continues...it's about protecting jobs and not the voiceless and vulnerable

  • the problem with America is they still don't get the difference between mental health conditions & intellectual disability. huge difference! stop calling them mentally disabled! institutionalization is never appropriate, but it is also disgusting to talk about 'adopting' these people as if they are abandoned dogs. they still have families, their families are still their formal decision makers. i know this as i work in a disability service organization involved with an institution.

  • it costs little to get those places clean and give some music and games to make ppl happy in there. There is NO excuse fr that filth

  • it kills me when i see these disabled people look at the camera and smile. they are so innocent and happy even though they are left to rot in this filfth, and there is nobody there to help give them what they deserve: love, care, and affection. this breaks my heart and brings me to tears. </3

  • I wanted to be a clinical and school psychologist and a high school teacher when I grow up .I wanted children of my own and adopted ones too... can you adopt from psychiatric facilities or "Special Homes"? Since I know thousands get adopted from agencies, but I wanted to adopt say teen or preteen or maybe eight or five but.... is it possible to adopt from here? Since you said they have no other place to go?

  • there are so many problems in this world. i am proud to work for the UN. but it sure does have its flaws. Ive seen co workers have nervous breakdowns after visiting centers such as this because they simply cannot believe, and or cope with the abuse they a have seen.

  • I come a country like this and people do not have the money to change this and even if these institutions get donations the staff would most likely take it for themselves because they're poor aswell. My mom lived in Peru and she wanted to donate blankets to a hospital but she saw that the staff took them home and did not give it to the patients, so she stopped doing this. sad but true

  • @moonlightcrystal123 its really sad because these are 1st world, industrialized countries. and the people just don't care about these forgotten people

  • It's a shame they can't just have training classes all day for these people in these places. Teaching them how to do chorse, helping staff take care of other patients. :(

  • It would alsobe wonderful if wealthy loud-mouths like susan sarandon would put her moey where her big mouth is. Quit bitching, lady, and send some of your millions of dollars to support these peple, because I don't want to!

  • we must help..

  • kdyby bylo jak pomoci..udělala bych to..

  • as a single father of a little boy with special needs this kills me. im a marine and this has me in tears. many told me i should have commited my son at birth. i refused, regardless of what some doctor says 'wrong' with him he is still my boy he is a human being. he has gone to and beyond what anyone has said possible. he is living proof of what love faith and endless determination can do for a person. i hope someone helps these poor innocent people. nobody deserves this. nobody

  • @MrSunshineinthesky Then why do you expect others to pay for his care? My sons problems are his mother's and mine-NO ONE ELSES and I don't feel that your childs problems should be mine. I expect you to react very hostily, but think just a minute about what I've said.

  • i think people should offer to volunteer to attend to these innocent souls social means and just to have a heart :( heartbreaking why can't people donate clothes or cups supplies to these facilities

  • it's a sad truth...

  • I don't understand how the people that work with these patients not care and not help them.

  • This is very sad. It show how stupid these governments are because they should know that these people can be rehabilitated and tought if they had proper training. The patients also need one on one therapy. Instead of putting money into war they need to put money into helping these people so that they can live normal lives. I have heard of people who became successful who had disabilities and thats because they had proper training when they were kids.

  • no wonder their crazy, their stuck with crazy people the rest of their lifes

  • i wished he would have came to willowbrook when iw as there then maybe wouldnt took so long to get it closed

  • omnipotent god?

  • @KSmoothSaxG This isn't Gods doing. It's humanities.

  • this is just so sad.

  • ISN'T THIS THAT PLACE THAT GHOST ADVENTURES INVESTIGATED?

  • This report lacks information. At the end there was happiness over one institution in Mexico being closed, but where did the people housed there go??? Did they go to a better place, get tossed out of the street, were they killed, where they placed is a worse place. I get so tired of the emotional pleas without any solutions attached.

  • i cried:(

  • this is actualy racism that they just gets locked up, THEY ARE HUMANS TOO THIS MAKE ME PISSED OFF BECAUSE THESE PEOPLE HAS JUST AS MUCH OF RIGHTS AS WE HAVE!

  • I am in college to be a special needs teacher and when I am out and get my life all ready I am adopting a special needs child maybe more then one I am adopting an asian child a black child a white child and a special needs child Please do not hate me for doing this But I want to adopt all these children and races to show race dont matter and that we are all equal =)
  • this made me cry i cant believe how these people r treated im soo gald my mom s one of the good ppl who give the md a good place to live, eat and be happy

  • im glad u guys r doing something about this dammit! god bless.

  • I know, damn rapists and murderists live in cells with television and all that, while poor people who done nothing wrong live in such filth

  • @xSimplyAmusedx example: our present leaders

  • @xSimplyAmusedx heartbreaking, isn't it :'(

  • @xSimplyAmusedx right? and where is your god now? these people didnt deserve a mother fucking that happened to them here

  • @xSimplyAmusedx AMEN!

  • This is absolutely horrifying. Criminals live in better conditions. What is wrong with humans as a species that causes us to treat our own in such ways?

  • This video is so hard to watch. I'm a college student studying to become a social worker. Videos like this remind me of why God is leading me down that career path. I really hope that I can give people like this a sense of love and acceptance.

  • @yourhut:

I am a person living in American with a significant mental health condition. I thank God I was born here and not there. But even so, it is about more than breaking down physical walls like the institution that closed. It's about embracing persons who reside in and out of institutions, giving people hope, placing value upon people's lives and recognizing that everyone has something of worth to contribute to our world. Best wishes as you journey alongside others! AJ

  • act now

  • I can tell you that in the early 80's I think it was, I went to look at the state mental hospital here when I was putting in an application for security. It looked as bad as some of these here.

  • This is horrific.

  • that is so sad how thet get treated they arejust like us that is discusting

  • Unacceptable and heartbreaking, no one under any circumstances should have to be treated this way-whether they have special needs or not.

A human is a human, no matter what.

  • This video makes me feel so selfish and that i take alot of things for granted which these peopel don't have. Thank you God for giving me all this. Everyone should appreciate the little things they have, especially your family. It breaks my heart to hear that the family, even parents of these children have abondoned them, its cruel and inhuman. No one deserves to be treated this way

  • Seeing videos like this saddens me to the core, not only that but it makes me feel immensely guilty and selfish that I sometimes complain about my life when there are children and adults suffering like this. It is inhuman! I want to know how can people like the ones who abuse these people exist?! How can they do the things they do and not feel a thing. It's disgusting, and so so sad.

  • More proof that a loving God does not and cannot exist.

  • god bless all these men, women, and children

  • you cant expect people to be LOVED in these institutions when they weren't loved enough by their own family.in the same time, u can't blame them for this, cause maybe they just can't bring them up.some of these people are in very extreme conditions and evenwhy they feel, they don't understand, i mean logic.so all we can do is make their conditions better and check children's mental health through technology before they are born...or it may be too late

  • seeing this makes me thinking how this can be today? this is really horrible and makes me feel sad.

  • This is cruel they are people to and most importantly these are God's Creation and he loves them! They have feelings!

  • this is so sad becuase i bet now these people are homeless...

    : (

  • Unacceptable. Absolutely unacceptable. Thank you for informing, for helping...we need to change this.

  • what i like to to know is how can they tell if babe is disabled autsim and ld dont show up tell kids start going to school or at the age of 3

  • well, i was thinking of changing my major from social work to art education, but this is changing my mind..

  • this is horrible why is this aloud this is not ok we and someonne needs to do something!

  • Why? How can people do that to one that is defenseless? Someone who is so lost...they are people too! They deserve proper treatment!

  • @ZombieStomper4 They don't have enough money to run the place. It isn't that people just want to be "mean".

  • i feel bad for these kids and adults

  • this is really sad how they are kept in horrible buildings like that, this is not a hospital ITS A PRISON !

  • such people are very expensive for the state. there must be a final solution.

  • @masagrad

I truly hope your just trolling. To put cost before the welfare of people is to lose all remaining humanity.

  • I agree, its like a consentration camp, ecept they dont kill them, only letting them be forgotten

  • this made me cry!!!

  • @werty3116 me too. its really sad to see people suffer while were in bed nice and warm

  • unfortunately, in many countries parents themselves put own children in that horrible institutions if they recognize that child is disable

These parents must be forced to sterilization !!

  • @russdurak its not like they wanted to.

  • its like a consentration camp.

  • The only thing that didn't disturb me was restraining people to a bed.. i have seen this done many times before and it is quite affective.

  • Unbelievable. It brings tears to my eyes. There is a wonderful book called Petey that is based on a real life experience by the author. It puts a more personal touch on what living in these kind of condiditons must be like.

  • These places also existed or exist in Britain and are just concentration camps

  • ohh no i mean they should put people like this in homes not just leave them on the floor 1:39 is very sad

  • How can thse countries improved their economic situation if they treat people like this...

  • So what do you suggest we do when it comes to people with mental disabilities?

  • This should go against Human Rights....

  • This is so sad. EVERYONE deserves to be loved and be treated with respect.

  • This is kinda sary just seeing the people, no offense...

  • Wait a minute, what all above mentioned countries have in common - GOVERMENT RUN HEALTHCARE, I know I'm Russian

  • 80% of these people can come work in the community. Activists need to get them into society. the other percent need proper care so one day we can embrace them all over the world as just another unique wonderful person

  • No thanks they can live in their own Community.

  • You must not have spent anytime with a person with disabilities before. If you had you would know that they are like any other human and therefore belong in the human community like the "average" person. I am hoping that you are just ignorant and not knowingly and willingly lacking compassion. Just imagine if you or a loved one had a disability. Would you not want to be treated with respect and given the opportunity to practice all of your rights?

  • Every country should have the ARC society to protect these people's rights!

    This is horrible

  • So sad.

  • Yes they do. They are not different then those who think their normal because everything is easy for them. They are people to and should have the same rights as those who dont have mental disabilities! This video makes you see how much protection severely disabled require. They are the forgotten minority. If you think Im being harsh Im not because Ive seen this stuff first hand.

  • Mental disabilities are people to. Goes to show if you love and care for those different from yourself you learn things about yourself you didn't even know. I've had classmates both with mental disabilities and without. People with mental disabilities are people like others. They see world as others see it. They're feeling get hurt to. If you pin them don't they bleed?

  • more people need to see this

  • Not all self-injurious behavior is caused by neglect. Though, it appears it's IS the case in your video, it is NOT the typical cause in persons with autism.....For example, self injury can be a reaction to loud noises, neurologically based or a way to communicate the person is in physical pain from toothache, etc....or, it can be used to avoid/escape situation they don't like...Anyway, love the video...makes you see how much protection severely disabled require..The are the forgotten minority

  • This is truly truly sad and absolutely breaks my heart. I work with mentally disabled children and adults. They are the most amazing people I have ever known. DONOPDON to speak with such ignorance is disgusting. Very uneducated words. They actually DO think and react and feel and produce! I know for sure, first hand, everyday of my life!! God forgive ignorance! Some of us don't need forgiving because we make a difference, I make a difference!

  • What kind of world do we live in where we allow disabled children and adults to live in these conditions? I feel so angry watching this. Where is the love? Have we become so selfish and preoccupied with a materialistic world that we allow these children to suffer in this way?The saddest part is that many of these people don't need to be there and many more have not had the opportunity to reach their full potential due to a lack of stimulation. God forgive us!

  • Children and adults that are born this way or become this way have every right to live and know what life is. Yes, I completely understand "why live this way?" Perhaps for many of us to see and understand that we can help and do something for them and the rest out there. Who are they, who are we to judge and have them suffer the way they have. They need more understanding and loving then any of us that are 100% well in health.

  • maybe donopdon should have watched the hole thing at the end of the movie it says 80% didnt need to be there.

  • This is what happens when governments are run ineffectively. The institutions that they depend on are also run ineffectively. I thank God I live in the US.

  • Willowbrook Institution was in the US....on Staten Island....look that up.

  • I know i may sound sick, but dude, isn't better just to put them out of their misery i mean, they dont think, react, feel and produce. but thats just my opinion, no disrespect toward them or their families.

  • i feel the same way. its such a shame that they have to be forced into this controlled life.

  • perhaps you should have a disabled child so that you can "shoot it"

as I recall, Hitler used to think along the same lines...

  • How in the blue fuck can you say that people with mental disabilties don't feel?

  • Amen to that - I think they feel even more than people who don't have the problems - because many of them are like children and children require more emotional care than adults.

  • You probably shouldn't reproduce if that is your thought process. They are people....just like me and you. For instance people with Cerebral Palsy have complete brain function....but the part of their brain that controls movement is the problem...the tounge is a muscle...therefore speech is hard to understand. Stephen Hawkins has CP and is reputed to be more intellegent than Einstein...

  • @donopdon If you think that watch Bugaria's Abandoned Children Revisited. This shows that these children can function properly if given the chance. Children with the same disabilities in the Uk would live productive lives.

  • cant watch this its to sad

  • What disturbs me about this video is it implies all institutions are run this way. This is not true. I have worked in an institution for 16 years and it is as clean and nice as your home. They go to class and participate in activities everyday. And I think they are the most beautiful people I have ever met.

The institutions were not always what they are now, and people did use to be encouraged to institutionalize their relatives with MR. But those days are gone. Now they couldn't do better!

  • this is in response to jillssoulsister-maybe the places you work for are nice but in many places in the world, people in mental institutions are tortured and living in disgusting environments.

  • Thats Not Fair For Them ,this is not helping them its killing them. poor them, clean places ,and teachers, doctors ,toys and games for kids, trips, healthy food, clothes. With these things every thing will be better !!

  • ACT

  • How the hell are they expected to improve with no stimulation? I feel violently sick; if me and my children lived over there this is how we would be treated; how can those people consider themselves nurses? I hope one day they will feel what their patients feel, it's no less than they deserve, what rotten animals. As for their families I hope they burn in hell, they put them there for their own selfishness, to abandon flesh and blood is inhuman, disgusting even, so much needs to change x

  • Seeing videos like this make me glad that I've been (and still am) considering adopting a child with special needs when I am financially able. I'm 21.

  • @bananaPLEASE good for you dude

  • @bananaPLEASE go for it! i am adopting too!

  • @bananaPLEASE fucking cause-hunter. There are plenty of healthy kids who deserve futures. Do you really want to change diapers in their 20s? Oh yeah, they're cute when they're little. If they aren't retarded, then they're crazy.

  • @bananaPLEASE how would you go about doing that?

  • @bananaPLEASE I admire you.

  • Unbelievable i'm mexican and it makes me sick to know my country is treating mentally disables like animals so sick.....

  • i am 38 years old i was born in france was born deaf but at ten years old i was caught by the ploice for stealing fruit and was locked away for 6 years after my mom and my aunt who lived in amercia at the time faught for me to get out i would like to do the same for others. when i went in the care home i was deaf when i come out had more problems.

  • what kind of problems u got when u came out ?

  • I worked for the department of mental disabilities for many years in the U.S.

You must know- this treatment happens on or soil, it is not just third world countries. Many times- the people employed by the state institutions are immigrants who have little or no feeling regarding the individuals who live there. Abuse runs rampant in these employees. I wish we could have a better screening process for employees.

  • I have currently worked in a developmental center (or institution) in Ohio for 16 years. Like Many of the people here I find this video shocking, because where I work is NOTHING like this.

  • HOW DARE!

If my child had a mental disability I would raise it! NOT LOCK IT UP IN A PRISON

  • so sad.

  • gods revenge will be terrible

  • may jesus save us one day, soon will be his coming its only a matter of some few years tho all the prophecies have been accomplished. All horrible things that are happening in our world now is meant to happen and jesus will come and we will reconquer our lost territories and regain our soil.

  • This is how a society can be measured. How it treats its mentally ill.

  • It makes me cry. I can sit here in Norway and complain about our healht care system, but it's a million times better than this. They have the right to a better life.

  • I dream of the day that facilities that care for these souls are as opulent & cared for as are our religious buildings and our religious buildings become as humbled as these care facilities are.

  • I like how they said at the end they are closing the one institution, that solves nothing, it only creates more homeless with mental disabilities or adds to the other institutions already overly crowed facility. The standards must change by laws, and facilities must obey those standards, the problem is they don't care enough about the people let alone the laws to bring things up to par.

  • I wanna become a shrink when I grow up. But I won't be selfish, like others. I' wanna help these people and loads of others out there. I'll put them before me.

  • wow. this is horrible.

i've always known i was going to adopt, but now i've made up my mind to adopt a mentally disabled child.

  • these videos really make you think about what our worlds is really like.

  • No matter what people should keep their family as far away and out of touch from institutions as possible. Ppl don`t change and generation after generation history has shown that those institutionalized are treated as sub-human. Individual humanity is removed when a person becomes just another number in any kind of institution. It is very rare to have a caretaker to truly care and understand. Even if they do care, they usually don`t have the time to effectively show that care.

  • cocavagyok...I am also Hungarian..and maybe I live in an other Hungary but here still more then 16.000 disabled people and more then 7.000 people with mental health problems are living in large institutions. Just a couple of weeks ago the talented caregivers have killed a woman by tiding her to the bed and leaving her there alone for the whole night. Is this the professional care you mentioned?

  • It's so sad... I know, we can't do anything... But we can see this video, we can thinking of them...

Sorry for my bad english, i'm french ..

  • thats good english A+

  • Give me these children...i will adopt them...they deserve a life like anyone. God bless them all

  • Why is this happening? im soooo sad right...i wanna do something.this is inhumane and an outrage....

  • OMG!This has got to be the saddest video ever. There has got to be something done about this.

  • these kind of videos make you think

  • how sad

  • Heartbreaking.

  • I wish some one could do more about this.

  • Hey... I'm hungarian and I can tell you that hungarian institutes are not like these. Hungarian conditions are not the bests, but hungarian doctors are very talented and they can provide professional care for patients with mental disorders. Here are free psychotherapy and creative groups without chains or agress.

  • Stunningly accurate.

  • Stunning and from my experience, frighteningly accurate.
