very nice fluied motion on the kit! Did you transcribe the drum part into a drum chart? Its nice to see a drummer who pays with a finace of a percussionist! I would not be surprised if you are also a symphonic percussionist! Keep up the great work!
Nice job!! Any advice for getting the hi hat part up to speed? Refferring to one of your earlier comments, Vinnie mentions that the time signature is 5/4 in an interview from Modern Drummer Oct. '93. You can find the interview on his web site. Thanks for posting.
This is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen, seriously man, that shit is motherfucker. I fell in love with this song as soon as I heard it, I was like "this is one of the most musical drum tracks I've ever heard!" Lo and behold, lots of other drummers agree. And you nail every lick! Just, wow. Wow.
Thanks for the compliment. I too really enjoy this tune. I decided that I had to figure out what Vinnie was doing at the end of the tune. It is seldom that you hear interesting drum parts on pop tunes. I respect Sting for encouraging Vinnie to express him self on that track.
You should really check out Russ Miller's album an DVD "Arrival" if you love great pop drumming. Manu Katche's album "It's About Time" is one of my favorites!
@flamflamflam If you love great pop drumming, make sure you check out Russ Miller's album "Arrival" as well as Manu Katche's album "It's About Time." Also any Toto stuff (obviously). Do you have any recommendations?
BTW - it sounds like they layered in 16th notes on the snare played with brushes about 2 minutes in - then it comes and goes a few times during the verses.
What other transcriptions have you done, and where can I find them?
He plays with heel down. Throw back! A la the late-GREAT Mark Craney! It's weird to watch. Also, it's weird to see inverted side-stick. Both are uncomfortable to watch. But the man can play!!! Sweet groove!
Great job, extremely relaxed which impresses me. Just wondering, what I'm hearing is not live is it? I heard the snare at 3:44 where you are turning the page. Still I've watched this many times. If I'm correct you are playing a steady pulse of 4 notes, accents on 1 3 5 then 2 and 4 of second measure of 5. This gives interest feel and was a challenge to learn, but cool.
great video...he missed the start which gives a bit funny and he changed the sticks where he used to use for the right and left just like me...so focused and professional
its a peace maple kit.. the black things are tom mounts.. they attach to the lugs and serve as a way to mount the toms.. rather than drilling into the shell of the drum as yamaha and other companies do
good job. Sounds very accurate. Been scrolling through the comments and u said u were busy getting a book together with ur transcriptions. Is it out yet and what's it called?
can't seem to find a publisher. Most places will only take something by invitation....? So they need to invite me first. I don't get it.
Anyway, I'm looking into publishing stuff online through a website or my myspace. only problem is that once my stuff is out there, it can be easily copied and sent through torrent sites. oh well. anyway, thanks for checking out my videos.
guess that the torrent factor can't be eliminated in any way. Even if u got published. Maybe you could set up a site like joe crabree's, with a paypal system. I don't think a lot of people would mind paying a small fee for the work you've put in. Anyway, good luck with whatever you've got planned and if you do publish online, i hope we get a 'heads up'.
Amazing mate. You have so much taste, both in terms of drumming and song choice. Sorry to ask if it's been asked before, but i was wondering what you're playing kit-wise.
Hey man you are immpressive! I am nota drummenr but, I can imagin how much time you have put in to get thins right. Do u think I have a chance to learn how to play? I am 27, and I play guitar, I am trying to teach myself on the drums. U think I have hope at this age to go to school and leran profesionally?
I think it depends on how much time you are willing to put into it. It also depends on what level you are looking to play. If you play guitar, it may not take long to get to a level where you can play bar gigs. Also, you should try to get a good teacher. Try to find someone who is honest and encouraging. Good luck. Let me know how it goes.
Thank you so much for the encouragment. Yes it makes a lot of sense that I need to get a good teacher and an honest one, who can tell me where I am and pushes me to my limits. I will make sure that I let you know, but it probalbly won't be untill June or so.
I did the transcription. I originaly wanted to have modern drummer publish it. However, I'm now thinking of putting together a book of transcriptions. I've been working hard on it. i've finished transcriptions of Vinnie, Benny Greb, Pery Price, Danny Cary, etc. I'm trying to have it finished by next Summer.
You can hear me. I set the ballance to be 60/40 You notice it when I make a mistake. Check out at about 1:34 when i miss the cross stick to turn the page.
Superb playing, can't wait for your "Seven Days" transcription to be published, your "I'm Tweeked" chart in March Issue of MD, was excellent, put Joe Bergamini's to shame!!:D:D Liked your Style and Analysis section on Vinnie too, noticed the excerpt from "Packard Goose", just wondering if you have any full charts of Colaiuta's playing with Zappa, or any transcriptions of Bozzio's work with Zappa?? Thanks, keep up the good work!!
The editor for MD said that he would like to. however, they just featured Vinnie in the March issue (you should pick it up. It is great). Anyway, the editor said he wanted to wait a few months before publishing another Vinnie transcription. I'll email him tomorrow to see if they are ready. If they aren't ready for it, I'll start emailing it around.
