I played this as soprano sax lead wiith the West Virginia University Wind Symphony. With so much character written into the part it was great fun to play!
I played the whole symphony in 98 with my college wind Ensemble. We were conducted by David Warble (California Wind Orchestra) and had George Takei doing a narration part they had developed. It was a great experience, because we were outside for a summer concert and nature decided to lend us a hand with a quick moving thunder storm. It obliged with rain at the right parts and a single clap of thunder right where it should have been. It will be something I never forget. A lot of fun to play
I might be playing timpani for this. Is there a part where the timpanist plays with an upside down cymbal on the drum and does glissandos. Ive seen videos with it sometimes happening and sometimes not.
I played the concert band version of the entire Symphony at Idlewild in 10th grade and let me tell you, the French Horn part is wacky, but you never hear it, haha.
Back in 94, my college wind ensemble played the whole symphony at the END of a program. This symphony by itself is 45 minutes long. I played second chair trumpet at the time and by the end it was rather difficult to get those last few high notes in Hobbits.
I might be wrong but isn't the solo at the beginning a soprano sax? I know it is in the concert band arrangement. So why's everyone saying it's an english horn??
@Beledagnir ... You grammar nazi! xD I kid. I'll admit, I screwed up on my grammar (which, mind you, doesn't happen often for I, too am a grammar nazi). AND SO... I mean't to say "This makes me want to learn to play English Horn so MUCH".
my high school band is playing the entire symphony for spring concert. Quite a handful but i can't wait. I think this is one of my favorite movements.
Oh wow, some of those pictures are quite disturbing. Next time, Bilbo, do Middle Earth a favor and tell Gollum what you have in your pocket, okay? o.o
Many years ago now, when I was in college we played the entire symphony. One of the first bands in the US to play it. All the movements gave me good bumps when I was playing then, still does today just listening to it. Would love to play it again.
We are going to play the whole symphony, exept Gollum, for our next concert. I like this part a lot, but just hearing it is, as you said, is creepy^^ The whole is much better than the Soundtrack of the film. Never play it after you played this symphony....just crap^^
wow...that was really intense! definately getting a creepy vibe from that piece! i wish our band was playing the whole symphony, but we're just playing hobbits.
@BlueEyedSweetie your high school is fielding an E-flat clarinet, Soprano Sax and a piccolo that can tune? I must say that is exceptional because this movement (as do many of these movements) out strips the ability of most high school players. Kudos! What high school do you attend?
@BlueEyedSweetie Not to mentioned the the deep trumpet section that this movement requires. You'd need at least 5 strong players to double t for that long, not to mentioned the pretty advanced smearing that is going on bringing pitches back in tune and in balance with each other. Your school is really stacked with talent that most major colleges would love to have in their music depart. What school is it? I would love to hear your concert.
I wish i had thought to look out here for this piece before performing this soprano sax solo. At times the performer was trying to be "too pretty" but there are many things i love about the interpretation too, that I think could have helped me think about this solo a different way. What the perfect instrument for Gollum, and another fabulous reason I'm glad I finally bought my soprano!
I'm jealous of anyone who got to play this piece...I only played the Hobbit theme but I've always wanted to play the whole thing.

I really like seeing the different versions of Gollum. It's fun to see how other people interpret such a complex character.

I love that the Smeagol the hobbit is quite present in the jolly themes reminiscent of the 5th mvt. 1st theme.

Creepy! But i can totally picture the psychologically tortured and fractured creature sulking in the dark. Such an eerie saxophone solo
