I'm just gonna say it...this guy is literally a top 3 best actor of our generation. The guy is simply incredible. His acting range is one that I've only seen in few other actors.. The guy just has "it". I've seen most of his films and have absolutely loved every one of his performances. He should have won the Oscar for this, I saw Hoffman's film and he had a great performance, but nowhere near Phoenix's acting level in this film. I'm sure he'll get his award before long though.

@CoD4CBEAR15 Well, Cash did have very low growling voice when he sang most of his songs that's true yet when he shouted or raised his voice a bit his pitch was (at least in my ear) quite high. Not like someone singing an opera or something, that's too high though! If you watch some Johnny Cash videos where he sing you can see that he sometimes get away from the mic for a moment to cough. I personally believe it was because he strained his voice too much when he went lower.

I've never heard him sing without a mic-stand in any video, well ofc in few occasions he seem to have had some sort of microphone or mic-stand in near background (not shown in the cameras perhaps?) or something that picked up his voice better. That's why he sounded very clear when he didn't sang in front of a visible mic-stand.

If you listen to Johnny Cash from the early 50's and then listen to him in the 60's you'll hear a little difference. Then if you listen to him in the 70's and all the way to his death in -03 you will notice how his voice has changed alot over the years.

Johnny was "born to sing", so to say. Phoenix did a good job but comes nowhere near Cash in terms of singing. On the other hand, there are a some movies were Cash had a role (leading role in Five Minutes to Live) but he could not really act and was very shallow, but he pulled it of good anyway.
