There's a really ugly backstory behind that, actually. Google shadowy story scientology tax exempt status to read all about how Scientology pressured the IRS into giving them tax exempt status (which is actually favorable tax exemption and preferential treatment to religions that are tax exempt).

This documentary shows just how crazy and powerful Scientology is...They recruited and brainwashed an A-List Movie Star for over 20 years. Forced him to divorce his movie star actress wife and force his kids to be brainwashed also and cause them to disconnect with their mother.

As strong as his personality was, he did have a weakness that allowed them to somehow manipulate him and make him into a good little poster-boy for their wierd, so-called, "religion." I guess when you're so brain-washed to that extent, it's hard to see th craziness that's really going on around you. They must do so EXTREMELY good brain washing, because any1 who can actually adhere to such manipulation and atrocities WILLINGLY is absolutely insane...

When you're one of the key players of a cult that enacts on such atrocities as government infiltration, child labour, suppression of free speech, hatred for many groups of people and outright lying to everyone as a core practice, and yet stay within such a corporation knowing full well that this goes on while promoting it like a good little posterboy... When the cult finally implodes..which is inevitable as so much of it's power is based on secrecy and dirty deals now exposed online, in the newspapers, in books, in films, on TV, at protests.

It will be interesting to see what Cruise will have to say, his indoctrinated fear of psychologists could mean he's in great danger of not getting real help when the Truman show ends and his boat tears into the clouds.

Money and fame obscure Cruise's vulnerability. Scientology could spill every single bean he himself has ever spilled in those confessional (auditing) sessions. Tape recorded and videotaped. Every deal with the devil he's ever made, every detail CoS decides would ruin him most.

Even if his slate were totally "clean," vicous lies would circulate if he blew, and these probably will anyway if cultville feels his image is hurting them -- which it is.
