I remember watching this on TV way back when. During the lead up to the separation, the station showed little snippets of quite a few sci-fi shows (Star Trek, Star Wars, et al). I wish I could've been part of it. It was the dreams of my generation to actually go to space.

The real pity is it was going to be the second Orbiter after Columbia, but Nasa ran smack into cost over runs on the Space Shuttle's retro-fit!
That is the real reason it never achieved orbit, I know I was there...
