  • Thank you so much for this tutorial. I'd like to add that some people, myself included, were having problems getting Chroma Key to work. Make sure you double click on the foreground video in your timeline so that it's in your viewer, otherwise you may be trying to key out your background or an empty sequence file. That ended up being the difference for me, hope it helps.

  • thanks dude.

  • what version of final cut is this

  • @mitchrosenbloom 4.5 HD i think

  • I AM DOING EVERYTHING RIGHT, BUT IT DOESNT EVEN CHANGE SLIGHTLY WHEN I INITIALLY USE THE DROP. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG????

  • Nice tutorial, thank you! I have a video project due in less than 3 hours and couldn't figure out the keying, this was a big help. Life-saving, even!

  • i got a site with abunch of japanese apartments *-*

  • Your video is great and easy to follow! Thanks a million.

  • don't underestimate yourself, you are a pro mate! thanks

  • Great video keep up the good work.

  • Thank You Man!! Was a great help!!

  • Thanks thats very clear and helpful.

  • thanks that was really really helpful :]

  • what happens if you move around

  • saved my life :)

  • WOW! THIS IS REALLY AWESOME! I had all of these effects a while back, but I deleted them because they weren't pre-keyed... NOW I know how to do it, because all of them had either a BLACK background or WHITE! :D Now I can use the Chroma key and now I haz heaps of EPIC effects! :D WOOT WOOT! SO HAPPY!

  • I have a question, I have a horrible green tint when doing this on the object that I want to view so how do I get rid of this tint.

  • @bazookaboy221 You could try under effects, key.. adding a spill suppressor. That should take out the green glow :)

  • @stuart29soton Thanks!!!

  • @stuart29soton Hey Stuart!I have a major problem. My hair is really big and curly and therefore it's hard to key out all the green details that is visible in my hair. Any suggestion of effects that can solve my problem?

    Thanks!

  • @MadaReppat5 Please help me Stuart!

  • I was able to use the 'green screen' in iMovie '11, but you don't get much control over the colours, size, saturation, or opacity, but couldn't figure out how to do it in FCE, even the manual was too much for my addled mind to understand. I went to bed in the wee hours with a massive headache. Today I found this video on YouTube. This tutorial is so blazingly clear, simple, straight forward that I am excited to go back to my footage. Thank you Stuart!!!!!

  • Thanks!! awesome viddy!!! but do you prefer the imovie more???? my laptop's a HP.....so obviously I can't download the imovie......but I just want to know if the imovie's better than the final cut....please let me know....thank you soo soo much :) great viddy!!!

  • u have final cut express HD but this video is 240p?

  • Thank you Stuart, very helpful... I like your honesty !

  • BEST ON YOUTUBE! Over the past few months I've been playing with thing stuff and watching tutorials for my own films, but this BY FAR was the most helpful!! Especially with getting rid of extra green, thank you so much!

  • dammit, I was going to add this video to my favs, but I accidentaly clicked on the dislike button >.<

  • @BlankoGatillo lol, thats ok.. I promise i won't cry too much :) :)

  • Very helpful. Thanks so much.

  • Does it apply the same way if i use a ideo instead of a picture?

  • Thank you!! This was awesome.

  • Hi Stuart, I have a already made video with out a green screen, but would like to add the video to adopt a green screen behind my actor, is that possible??

  • I tried doing this with a brown background, and it didn't work. When I chose the colour, it didn't show the background behind it, even though my pointer was on both clips. What should I do?

  • Dude your videos ROCK! Thorough and well done~ Keep them coming~ I'm learning heaps

  • That was very helpful, thanks!

  • thanks a lot! i've been wanting to learn about this for a while

  • Thanks for this. We are doing a green screen video for our music school students. Your info helped a lot!

  • This was terrific. Thanks so much for having made this video...!!

  • Does a solid background works just like he said?

  • @monmontae Basically chroma key will make a colour that you select as transparent. So yes in theory any colour can be keyed out, although don't try and used colours like Red / pink etc or any colours that your subject you want to key has as this will end up keying out someone's face or body etc.. :)

  • @stuart29soton thank you very much :) IMa apply what I learned from you and Ill try to upload it as response

    Thanks :)

  • so basically you dont need any green screen, just one solid color in the backround???

  • @bbbpwns Basically chroma key will make a colour that you select as transparent. So yes in theory any colour can be keyed out, although don't try and used colours like Red / pink etc or any colours that your subject you want to key has as this will end up keying out someone's face or body etc.. :)

  • @bbbpwns the neon green is preferred because not too many people wear that color, but if you had a navy blue or white background you couldn't key it out very well because you'd take some of the images you want to keep with it

  • Thank you this was very helpful and your volume was just fine

  • Thank you for this video...very helpful!

  • thanks dude!

  • bar having to watch it a few times coz i fel asleep a few times, it was really helpfull thanks :D

  • Really handy mate! Thanks very much for this!

  • Thanks a lot. I just got an iMac, and I used Sony Vegas, so I'm trying to understand where everything is.

  • Stuart, Thank you so much!!!! I just got FCE and it scares the crap out of me because I have absolutely no idea how to use it. You just really helped me!!!

  • Many thanks, Stuart. I have a good green screen, but never use it unless I hire in pro crew. Now I will try this myself on fcp. You make it look easy!

  • Cool! You make it sound easy. I have a green screen, but in the past have always hired in pro camera crew to use.. now I will try to use it myself. Many thanks.

  • Nice one man! Awesome tutorial!

  • it says i have to render all of my videos when i import them to the bar? how do you do that it doesnt have a red line?

  • Comment removed

  • Great Work! Thanks!

  • Thank you, this was greatly helpful.

  • why do i have to render every time i edit the clips together?

  • Very helpful! I have a single-colored sheet that I hope will work. I was glad to hear it didn't have to be green. :)

    Thanks, and keep it up.

  • Hugely helpful. Thanks so much Stuart!

  • @jakeafus78 You're most welcome :)

  • It's a nice little tutorial, but you would have had to have made far fewer adjustments in the settings if you had done a better job lighting the subject and the green screen. B+ for software knowledge, C- for lighting technique.

  • Thank you very much, as a result of watching this I have made an awesome video that is going to be played at school assembly. Cheers!

  • Very Good Tutorial! Thanks.

  • why do u have to crop?

  • This video was incredibly helpful. Thank you so much!

  • That was helpful. I wish you'd keep the canvas in frame while sliding the corona bars around so I can see the adjustments you're making, but otherwise really good job.

  • Thanks that was great!

  • How do you add a video on your background using Final cut. Let say you shot something on green screen, and you want to use motion pictures as background in your final edit.

  • do you know how to help shadow, i have a slight shadow and it messes the screen up a little.

  • how do u render it?

  • @ItsCurtisDale command r

  • @ItsCurtisDale command r

  • how do i get a pure whit background i just want to delete the back completely but it just stays black with no back drop, id like to have it white??

  • Great video, Your volume was great for me.............! Nice job and thanks for this video.

  • Thanks a bunch for the tutorial!

  • I have filmed a disco party and it was dark and now i have like grey/white pixels over my film, anyone have tips for me how to get rid of that?

It's like a sort of haze.

    Thank you.

  • This is like the easiest thing to do in FCP!!! Thanks for the video!

  • Do you need to crop?

  • thanks mate

  • Thank you so very much for posting this tutorial. I found it very easy to go by and my video looks great. I have only ever used After Effects but with only having that at work and Final Cut Express at home, this has saved a late night in at the office.

    Thanks again!!

  • thanks a lot for all the explanation. I just started now using fce4 and I was becoming crazy until I found this video where you can explain how to use the green screen. It really helps me a lot. I hope you don't stop helping us. thanks thanks and thanks again ;-)

  • Oh my god you have no idea how much you have helped me. This summer I will be filming Doctor Who spin-off fan film. I barely have enough money to afford the costumes and props so you can guess the buying a pro green screen was completely out of the question. Since I have Final Cut Express, after watching this video I now feel so relieved that many of my problems are now gone.

    Thank you Stuart xx

  • Thank you, really good video!

  • quicker method of cropping is to use the taskbar at the side, it contains lots of tools and stuff which can b useful in cropping and editing

  • lol 6:28 his face is green

  • hehe i have only just noticed that, must be something that youtube did when they converted it, as my original doesn't do that. Ah well no one is perfect.. :)

  • very good tutorial.

  • Stuart, the copyright symbol on mac is alt (apple key) + G, just thought you might want to know for future reference.

    Great Vid, thanks!

  • @Seebals

Alt isn't the same as Apple.

  • Hello,

I just wanted to thank everyone who has commented on this video, i never thought in a million years that it would become useful to anyone. I like a lot of people, never really understood the workings of final cut. So i just kept at it until i worked it out, soon as i did, i made the video to pass it on.

I am thinking of doing some more video's soon. Sadly i just don't get the time that i used too :( but i will get some more out soon.

    Thanks

    Stu

  • thankyou!

  • wow...this is great thanks

  • Excellent tutorial walk through the green screen process. Thanks for breaking it down. Much appreciated.

  • No probs, glad it helped you. I remember when i first installed Final Cut it scared the hell out of me, i have NO idea how to use it. So i took my time and worked some features out. It seemed there was no real easy to follow videos guiding you though the features so i thought i would do one :)

  • Best green screen tutorial I've seen yet! It's not confusing and very helpful!

  • Great tutorial, maybe you could boost your volume next time.

  • The volume was boosted until it was red lining, perhaps Youtube does something to the volume when it converts it. In either case, i will keep an eye well ear on it for the next ones :)

  • @SilentScope75 there is no problem with the volume.

  • Good form man. Thank you!

  • thank you so much. You area genius i would have never been able to do this on my own!

  • This was VERY helpful! Marius

  • Very helpful!

  • WHENEVER IM LOKING FOR HELP ON FINAL CUT EXPRESS 4 ALL I SEARCH IS stuart29soton!!!!!!!YOU ARE A GENIUS THAN YOU!!!

  • Thanks so much!! Im a studying film major and i needed this!

  • I am very impressed, really clear and well presented thanks :)

  • Stuart I love your vids!

  • Good job!

  • I think Adobe Premiere pro is easier actually. Just go to video effects - chroma key - color extractor (click on green screen) and then use the "similarity" slider to extract the green that the program processes as green from what you clicked on with the color extractor.

  • Thanks for your help! Your tutorial was easy to understand and learn from!

  • Sweet! Thanks... This only took a minute to learn. I used my dogs green blanket and a lamp lol.

  • hey, great video, but is this final cut 5, or 6 or 7?

i have only a macbook (not a pro), and what could run on my mac then ?

thankx, please comment back at mine profile

  • Its final cut express. Final cut express has only come out with 4 versions. I'm guessing this is final cut HD (3.5) because fce4 came out in 2008. I'm not sure if I'm helping you but.....hope i did. :)

  • it is for any final cut and this will work on ur mac book they r the same thing but pro is "more memory"

  • excellent job sir! salute!

  • i have Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9.0 (not platneum)

  • Excellent! Very helpful. Thanks.

  • Thank you a million, Final Cut can be a pain sometimes, just isn't very clear how to do things. And what's with it not having any tutorials on instructions!

  • Thanks

  • Thank you!

  • Thank you! your amazing keep the video's coming :D

  • THANKS!!!!!

  • Great thanks alot! Saved me sooo much time and stress :-)

  • you talk way to low

  • Fantastic! Thank you very much, your video was very helpful!

  • Thanks man!! But what is blue screen better for?

  • Very helpful. I'll give it a whirl.

  • THANKS!

  • Thank you! I've been using final cut to make videos and this is really going to help.

  • Sweet action bro! helps bums like me master the art eh? thanks!

  • wait can you use any color as long as it is a solid color?

  • ya u can but blue and green work best cuz they r the furthest color away from ur skin color. if it is like ur skin color at all u could disapear when u key out the screen color

  • helped alot

  • Very interesting training clip. Thank you

  • Hey, just wondering

if you wanna like move around and stuff on a green screen will it work the same

    Also,when I do the chroma-keyer i always have a glow of purple/green?

  • your standing too close to the screen i think, thats usually caused by a shadow, i think anyway:)

  • Thanks I tried it and it helped A LOT

    ps: MACS RULEE

  • @nadawgandpeeps Yeah, cuz you absolutely can't do chroma key on a PC...idiot.

  • Great video, thanks a lot...

  • will that work with just a square of video

  • Yeah, you should have no issue.

  • ok thanks

  • Mac FTW!

  • amen to that.

  • Thanks for the useful information. How do you get the crossbars on your Canvas window?

  • theres a little icon above the video, qith liek a square in it, click that and it will be on view image, click it onto view image + wireframe :)

    hope that helps you
