  • Came here for the music and all I can see is bright intelligent coments too !! I like that :D

  • @chazzdurden

I've not actually deleted that many. Mainly personal abuse, and a couple that were so awful they still make me shudder.

Everyone has the right to their own opinion.

  • This song is a perfect example of why 50-year old people remain exponentially more hip than their grand-kids.

    That's one for the books.

  • @dosware

    It most certainly is !

    I'll try not plagiarise it.

  • This is a vital song for anyone who ends up in any kind of bad situation.

Joe Strummer wouldve said that this was a public service announcement.... with guitars..

  • @Acidpunk101

The late great Joe Strummer should have said that at the time. Now there's this constant argument (which I don't want to get involved with) who were the best ? Well for some weird reason I have no interest in the Clash's music, but the Ruts had a good handful of great songs. But then in the Clash's defence, I saw them live at the Caird Hall (Dundee) in full flow (1979 ?), and they were brilliant, Despite being covered in gob from Dundee's "finest".

  • well the name of a dish in a pizza place near my university send me here :D

  • They played Cambridge Corn Exchange (1977 or 78? - can't quite remember - must be getting old) where the sound has notourously bad acoustics but they filled the place with sound. It bounded off the walls, amazing. Never heard anything like it. This was with Malcolm Owen. Very underrated band.

Sold one of my records to Henry Rollins on Ebay recently. He never even left feedback - but I still think he's fantastic.

  • This song is amazing and it's very relevant to my life at the moment (I'm 19, currently unemployed and on the dole) so this song is definitely close to my heart. I didn't actually listen to this until earlier this year when Henry Rollins mentioned the band in one of his talk shows, and I recognised the band name because I'd heard Babylon's Burning when I was little (my mum had it on a punk compilation tape that she used to play all the time) and I've always loved that song. Such a great band.

  • @TooxCoolxQueenie

You're not the only one, I'm 48 and stuck on Incapacity Benefit. And I was going through the whole academic thing of school then university about the time this song was on the go, and I found it just as relevant back then ! The song is timeless. Along with "Rat Race" by The Specials.

  • @TooxCoolxQueenie

it's my favourite song of all time, i was too young to see the the ruts live before Malcolm Owen died but i saw the ruts with rollins a few years ago in london, made my gig going life, still makes me feel like i did the first time i heard it when i was 13, im 44 now lol, love it :-)

  • My fave song of all time

  • this is about heroin abuse/use, depending on your point of view,. as an ex addict[mostly] i can deffo comfirm this IS about heroin addiction... every day is a hunt for cash for gear, living in a hole, waking up, shoplifting for cash for more gear... it's kinda fun at first. then you slash your wrists and you think "this isnt fun anymore".somehow,somewhere,somewhen. the fun just went away til it becomes worse than a job because you steal from your mother to pay for it. [notanantidrug mssgbtw]

  • I heard this song once back when I lived in England in the early 1980's.

I never knew who made the song but it stayed in my head.

It has a strange power. A kind of depressing "Fuck the world" kind of feel.

This is not something I'd listen to everyday.

    But it is strong.

The Ruts had to be one of the very best Punk Rock Bands.

They had a Raw Power that can't be denied.

  • 'Im ashamed to say this is the very first time I've heard The Ruts, boy have I been missing out.

  • @AmpOverRide

Better than The Clash. And they'd only really just got going when Malcolm Owen died.

I've got 2 more uploads, one "conventional" ("Staring At The Rude Boys") and the incredible punk/reggae mix "Jah Wars". A "search" will reveal other gems such as "Babylon's Burning".

  • @roddy76to86 Not better than the clash

  • @swill689

It's a bit theoretical because The Ruts were cut short due to the tragic death of Malcolm Owen. But in any event it's a matter of personal opinion. I prefer the Ruts, you prefer the Clash. End of story.

  • @roddy76to86 Why you compare to The Clash, anyway? Is like saying you love your girlfriend (or wife), and that other girls sucks.

  • @SuperPais

Very good and truthful point. I suppose my hang-up is that tragic death of Malcolm Owen most probably deprived us all of some very good music.

I saw the Clash live about 1979 in Dundee on their "London Calling" tour. Despite my lack of enthusiasm for most of their music, they put heart and soul into that performance and were brilliant.

  • @roddy76to86

Yip, there's no point in comparing them. This isn't the x-factor!

  • I love the ambiguity of " you gotta get out of it!" what the rut or just get out of it? Nice post thanks! Long time since I heard it,

  • Thumbs up if Henry Rollins sent you here.

  • Theme song for my job...

  • @dkopf

Along with millions of other people !

  • this song is timeless ,glad no one dared to dislike it ,songs like this save lives ,the power of music .

  • @homebrew95

It's impossible really to say if that's true, and if so how many, but I think you're right. I know when I've been really down this song his picked me up, and there's this great feeling of "fuck everything" afterwards.

  • I need to get out of this rut, rapid. R.I.P. Malc.

  • NO-ONE'S WRONG IF THEY LIKE THE RUTS--WKD GROUP----THE BRILLIANT MEMORIES OF MY MENTAL YOUTH--->>>>(& I STILL HAVEN'T GROWN UP)

    T/F!

  • im not in a rut..or even remotely upset....still ,its a fkn great track.

  • best punk band....ever........................

  • This make me think of Rollins talking about the Ruts. "Hey, I'm in a rut." hahah

  • @TheAverageCanadian Rollins loves this group!

  • classic luv it

  • I HATE HEROINE !!! Killed So Many Cool People :(, (I am Branflakes19)

  • Thank fuck I got out of that rut, with my internet being down lastnight.

Excuse my language as well, but you would have been equally as pissed off, as I was.

  • A Brilliant Song love Shirls xx

  • Fuck smack.

  • I love this track but I really struggle to understand how you can send a message of hope like this and then die from what your writing to prevent, maybe it's this that adds to the track, superb.

  • @graybee40 once your straight (that means taking it btw you take it to get straight) you will say anything because your normal then etc

  • Heroin Addiction in the cold light of Day.I couldn't have wrote better myself and perhaps only John Lennon got as close as this in his description of when you are

    Turkeying.

  • @flanneryged very true m8 h eyes fuck your brain :(

  • The Ruts were a brilliant band ... and one example of the reason the late 70s was such a brilliant time for rock n roll ...

  • FANTASTIC !!!!!

  • anybody got h eye's would love to hear that been years

  • ...you've gotta get out of it...

  • Your in a rut!

  • Bloody right. And I've gotta get outta it.

  • Not bad eh for an original 70's punk band!

This is where the true spirit of punk lies to be honest!

The ruts are a legend in their own right and the best thing about it is they dont see themselves as a legend, truly decent blokes and tragic that we no longer have malcolm or foxy!

  • very cool song! I can barely make out what they're saying (I'll have to look up lyrics later) but that bass part...*blinks rapidly* its amazing!

  • Well as I've told anybody who can be bothered listening, good lyrics are the "icing on the cake". You can have a great song with rubbish lyrics, but not the other way round.

In this case the chorus goes "I'M INNA RUT, GOTTA GET OUTTA IT OUTTA IT OUTTA IT OUTTA IT.................!!

  • YOU'RE INNA RUT, YOU GOTTA GET OUTTA IT OUTTA IT etc.

    Apologies, being egocentric there !

  • One of the best...thanks!!!

  • Absolutely - tragic that Malcolm Owen died so young as they were just getting into their stride.

  • R.I.P Malcom owen
