These kinda game endings (i.e. "life's a bummer") are now considered works of genius - just look at Shadow of the Colossus. Everybody else thought it was amazing and thought provoking storytelling, whereas I just thought jeez, whatever happened to 'congratulations!' or 'great job!' - we are as gamers after all just doing what the game is telling us to do, why try and make you feel like slashing your wrists just for having the audacity to play their game? phantasmagoria's ending wasn't that bad. it made sense because the demon couldn't be killed in a host's body so yea it wasn't happy but it made sense. And part 2 had a freakin awesome story. i doubt this game was the reason sierra went down.

Phantasmagoria seems like pretty much like it was badly written as intended maybe, if she could find a "magic spell" to easily kill a demon, why couldn't they have her husband reive upon the demons death, or atleast have a spell to revive her husband. It's like they just rushed the plot/script.
Shame nothing from NES was in this list, but then again there is a mass of overly-difficult games where your only reward is somthing like CONGRADULATION.
Can you post a special ending of Dreamfall the Longest Journey, i never liked that ending but the game at least for me was really nice, or at least some one that can tell me if there is another ending for that game T_T please?
What about Ghosts N' Goblins? First you have to play it all over again due to Satan's fucking illusion and after all the trouble of going through it again you are rewarded with:

This is the second time I've seen a Top Ten list condemn Quest for Glory III for ruining the series etc etc. but I don't understand why.I don't understand how you can say it rendered the two previous entries pointless. I didn't get that impression at all. Sure being whisked off away by the bad guys at the end before you could celebrate you victory was rather jarring, but it was one of the better sequel hooks I've seen.

Another bad ending was Sonic Chronicles The Dark Brotherhood. The game was great, but ended on such a cliffhanger when your ship gets shot down by eggman's AA guns when you are about to land on earth after a long ailien fighting adventure, and you thought eggman reformed when he helped you get your ship ready. There is no sequel and sign of a sequal, since it was released in 2008 and still no sequal signs.
@minsecous The game could use improved graphics, and a few other tweaks I agree, but I have one theory to this ending: To keep the Sonic Series moving, instead of saying sonic got shot down and died, or making eggman reform would also end the series. The loser one at least fits the theme they were setting up. Maybe it went too far in that direction and caused no change in the character at all? Sort of like how we expect some change to happen somewhere when we read a novel, otherwise it felt pointless?

Worst ending for me was "Fragile Dreams." It sets up everything like the protagonist will find other survivors from the apocalypse only for it to say that he died alone. Seriously? Yank the players around like that?
Okay, the gameplay wasn't the best but the story was really good until that point.
Hmmm... in part one, you sort our three rules for this top ten - there had to be a story in the game to begin with, they had to be over 5 years old... and the game itself has to be good. You specifically discounted bad games with bad endings, choosing only to focus on games which were good, but were badly let down by the ending. Not only did you not mention this rule in the second part, but most of the games in part two are by your own admission, bad. Otherwise, good list.
Loom had a terrible ending, I was just like "WTF, how is that even an ending?" It's like someone turned 2 pages at once, I felt like the game was supposed to continue or have a sequel. But nooo....
If this countdown included more recent games, Fallout 3 would definitely be on the list. Great game, great story, but a ridiculously disappointing ending.
That was a very well done list. None of that constant cursing and dry humor that some of the other guys evince. Great job. But I gotta say that sad endings aren't nessasarily bad, but that's my opinion anyways.

Phantas is the worst ending? Seriously?!?! The whole game plays like a horror movie so it ends like one too. If you expected sunshine, roses and everyone living happily ever after you picked the wrong game, because no self-respecting horror ends this way. Oh and how can you make a Top 10 without including Fable, that ending was so bad it was rewritten in later versions to suck less.
@TheLaceWeaver Phantas would have been fine if the ending made sense. If she needed to kill her husband to save herself, fine. Instead, she kills her husband, and then she realizes, oopsie doopsie, she did not kill the demon inside him, and then she discovers she can easily defeat the demon with a simple magic spell. So if killing the demon was easily done with a magic spell, why did she "have to" kill her husband in cold blood? Because "life can be a bummer"...? That is just lazy storytelling.
@techtite My only explantion is that the spell wouldn't work if the demon was in a human host. Also why won't you make more videos, you got a great voice and I want to see more top 10 lists :(
@techtite It made perfect sense to me, she was about to do the ritual to banish the demon but her possessed husband got the drop on her and she had no choice but to kill him or she'd be dead herself. I wouldn't call it lazy storytelling because it gives a perfectly plausible reason why it ended the way it did. Sure, having no "good" alternate ending sucks (I know I was disappointed) but it doesn't deserve the Worst ending title because hey, it's horror - you get what you bargained for.

The game was great, but ended on such a cliffhanger when your ship gets shot down by eggman's AA guns when you are about to land on earth after a long ailien fighting adventure, and you thought eggman reformed when he helped you get your ship ready. There is no sequel and sign of a sequal, since it was released in 2008 and still no sequal signs.

@minsecous The game could use improved graphics, and a few other tweaks I agree, but I have one theory to this ending: To keep the Sonic Series moving, instead of saying sonic got shot down and died, or making eggman reform would also end the series. I sold the game for 20 dollars. It was a little bit of a boring game though I agree. have headphones which make it a little bit more epic though

Seems like the police watched too much Detective Conan...in one episode 3 a guy kills himself by stabbing himself in the back. How? He use an iceblock with a knife in it and jumps backwards onto it.

Take persona 3 for example [SPOILERS] Your character dies, it was sad? yes, but you feel that the ending was complete, and you feel satisfied.
The endings that he said was just like, "oh you want a satisfactory ending, well fuck you, you can't have it"

But really the reason why it was so bad is because before rareware was bought by Microsoft, they were going to make a sequel, instead Microsoft has them make a censored remake of the game. Worst ending for me was "Fragile Dreams." It sets up everything like the protagonist will find other survivors from the apocalypse only for it to say that he died alone. Seriously? Yank the players around like that?

Hmmm... in part one, you sort our three rules for this top ten - there had to be a story in the game to begin with, they had to be over 5 years old... and the game itself has to be good. You specifically discounted bad games with bad endings, choosing only to focus on games which were good, but were badly let down by the ending. Not only did you not mention this rule in the second part, but most of the games in part two are by your own admission, bad. Otherwise, good list.

That was a very well done list. None of that constant cursing and dry humor that some of the other guys evince. Great job. But I gotta say that sad endings aren't nessasarily bad, but that's my opinion anyways.

Phantas is the worst ending? Seriously?!?! The whole game plays like a horror movie so it ends like one too. If you expected sunshine, roses and everyone living happily ever after you picked the wrong game, because no self-respecting horror ends this way. Oh and how can you make a Top 10 without including Fable, that ending was so bad it was rewritten in later versions to suck less.

@TheLaceWeaver Phantas would have been fine if the ending made sense. If she needed to kill her husband to save herself, fine. Instead, she kills her husband, and then she realizes, oopsie doopsie, she did not kill the demon inside him, and then she discovers she can easily defeat the demon with a simple magic spell. So if killing the demon was easily done with a magic spell, why did she "have to" kill her husband in cold blood? Because "life can be a bummer"...? That is just lazy storytelling.

@techtite It made perfect sense to me, she was about to do the ritual to banish the demon but her possessed husband got the drop on her and she had no choice but to kill him or she'd be dead herself. I wouldn't call it lazy storytelling because it gives a perfectly plausible reason why it ended the way it did. Sure, having no "good" alternate ending sucks (I know I was disappointed) but it doesn't deserve the Worst ending title because hey, it's horror - you get what you bargained for.
