  • I find that their songs from Alligator sound a bit better live

  • I love how their drummer will never, for any reason, use a rock beat. It makes their music SO much more interesting

  • at 1:41 the geeza on the bass can't get enough, he's trying to but he can't

  • Comment removed

  • such an amazing song

  • Wooooooooo, chyeah...go get 'em, Mr. Matt! Uploaded on my 20th b-day and a couple days ago marked 6 months since my 21st. People should be flocking here this month!

  • 2:33 He's like, "this fucking guy! Messing with my shit again"

  • who is this crowd of apathetic 30-something-year-old hipsters? if matt berninger was raging in the crowd to one of the national's most epic songs i'd be mobbing him and raging with him like people normally do at every national concert

  • someone hug him.

  • @mogospetrica I heard them live yesterday and they sounded amazing, the video doesn't capture his voice that well. When he jumped down into the crowd I HUGGED him. The show was the definition of epic. UUgh just getting goosebumps thinking about it now!

  • Fun game to play while you watch this video: Spot the Black Guy.

  • This was really nice of The National to play for a crowd of homless people. Good performance too.

  • You can tell that he had his usual drinks before this show.. he's smashed..

  • What a shitty crowd, also Matt's voice sounds awful live

  • Holy shit how long is the cord?

  • they're just too hipster to show too much enthusiasm

  • So. Smooth.

  • YouTube viewers are as a rule too obsessed with observing crowds. Just because a person is standing still, maybe moving to the music subtly, listening intently, doesn't mean they're BORED or HATE THE BAND or are an ASSHOLE, you know what I mean? Not everyone feels the need to thrash about to prove how much they're "feeling it."

  • lol the security or sound dude at 2:33 doesn't look too thrilled

  • Comment removed

  • If he went into the crowd like that in the UK, security would be all over his ass

  • How is it that the microphone was not wireless. Think about how many people were clothes lined and wire burned... ow.

  • I like how at 2:33 a member of the band is like "wtf is he doing"

  • What a shit crowd id be going mental if i got the chance to see this band live!

  • Yeah, seriously, how dare that one guy have fun at a live concert?

  • This is when I need you...

  • I don't think they were bored. If you look at the audience, there seemed to be a lot of older people. Not that I'm saying older people can't dance to music, but it seems to be a more intimate affair.

  • that audience look bored as fuck.

  • Pause at 4:00 iconic shot if I've ever seen one.

  • this is so sad. fuck that audience, if i was there you coudnt stop me from rocking out

  • Matt with a hat at the end

  • Sick drumming

  • Incredible drums

  • haha he is so drunk but so fucking awesome!

  • ....And six people will inevitably fuck us over.

  • lol at 3:58 someone put a hat on his head and he just threw it away.

  • someone needs to invest in a wireless mic

  • ha haa, that microphone cord I thought was going to choke some people!

  • Man, his voice is horrible live.

  • Man, I love the National, but watching the crowd in this video makes me embarrassed to be white.

  • This song reminds me of my early childhood when I was 6 years old and I showed up in a new country wearing my best clothes and carrying a briefcase to school. haha and even in my best clothes it didnt matter.. it took a while to fit in.

  • so at 0:13 bryce plays a les paul, but at 0:37 this guy has a jaguar in his hands

    IS THIS MAGIC????

    great song by the way

  • @ThatGuyFromAtlantis

Not magic....if you listen closely you can hear something goes south on his paul and you can very discreetly and quickly see him do a switch while the other guitarist looks over to see what is up. I hear a lot of feedback, I think they had sound issues that night.

  • @ThatGuyFromAtlantis Nah they have roadies doing it constantly. I saw them Wednesday and they were switching guitars constantly.

  • @TubularSoundSystem yeah, I know, but I've never seen it happen during a song. I just didn't notice anything but he probably broke a string or something

  • what amazing song,

one of the best song that i've listened.

    wow 8D

  • Wow. I love this.

  • I saw them on this last tour...and the 4 people I went with and I agree...a top 5 live band we have ever seen. And I've seen a lot of them.

  • it isn't the crowd, it's the venue. BAM is an opera house with tiered seating and a balcony. i've seen them there before, and it's more about the way they sound and experiencing the intricacies of their songs in a space built to convey such things, as opposed getting hammered and losing your sh*t to them at a regular box-shaped club venue. regardless, it's worth it to catch them in either atmosphere. it isn't the crowd, it's the venue. so chill.

  • dear prophet bar,

the national rifle, NOT the national, are playing in dallas. as someone who just spent over $200 to go to oklahoma for 6 hours for the sole purpose of seeing them live, i don't appreciate the heart attack your link nearly gave me. please correct this!

    thanks!

  • Even Mr November would've fucked over that shit cowd.

  • dear man who was obviously the most energetic and excited one in the crowd,

    keep being awesome.

    love the world.

  • stroke those chins...

  • Is that guy at 0:25 like "Hey, I said NO DANCING, woman!"?

  • @WilfredsBackUp LMAO.

  • @WilfredsBackUp LOL, nice eye

  • Where the fuck did they get this crowd? I dream of seeing this song live and going out of my mind to it.

  • Bloody hipsters.

  • He has to get deep into that sauvignon fierce to put up with Brooklyn hipsters, he almost took a couple falls there.

  • Hipsters don't dance..not 'cause they cant..they just don't want to split their little sisters pants.

  • Como se nota que no está dando el concierto en España, aquí ya nos habríamos tirado encima de él.

  • if matt did that at the show i watched he would have been crushed. This crowd is just lame (not saying i want matt to be crushed but you know our crowd got into it)

  • At first I thought, "Why is this crowd so lame?" And then I read, "Live at the Brooklyn Academy of Music." And then I understood.

  • Best song. But the crowd is lamesauce here.

  • FUCK YOU VEVO

  • What a long mic cord.

  • everyone stop complaining about teh crowd being inactive, we all know hipsters are too cool to dance and standing still is way more obscure to do.

  • if i was watching the national giving a performance like that id be moving a damn lot more than anyone in that crowd.

  • check their live performances in zagreb, croatia for best crowd responses, matt has said they had three of their best ever gigs there

  • Heaven forbid someone have fun at a rock gig

Kudos to the one guy like 5 rows in who's actually dancing and jumping around for most of the show.

  • @MrSpike378 They could be enjoying themselves just fine for all you know. Sorry these guys didn't fit in with your idea of what fun is.

  • @MrSpike378 I see your point, but where does it say I have to jump up and down to "enjoy" a rock gig? A little prescriptive, no?

  • good song but look at all the hipsters in the croud. I hate those hipster rich kid posers.

  • this is such a good song, esp the drums and guitar work. Saw it live in Cologne, my God we were a bit more lively than this lot!!!

  • Did he change guitars midverse?

  • @sonic777111 at :27, you hear come crazy nasty feedback...then his brother, the other guitar, player gives him "the look" at :29, then at :38, you see him unmuting his signal chain to play the blue fender. i was trying to figure out through the first or second time watching it, too...

  • matt is a stumbling drunk

  • @lol13715

    it is in some ways

  • @bcgabriot: yeah because we're all dying to hear YOU sing...

  • they need to hire me as their singer, I can reproduce their album quality vocals to a T without fail live, apparently he can't sing worth a shit live, which is funny considering the National's vocals are as easy as they come.

  • @bcgabriot GTFO.

  • @lol13715 honestly, shut the fuck up, when I hit a concert for a band I love, I let loose, I dance! That's how you respond to the music, bobbing and smiling is social anxiety, afraid to move the way you want to move, it's not a natural response. music will die when the crowd stops moving.

  • why does popular music suck

  • why does popular music suck dick

  • if you think this was a dead crowd, then you're at the wrong concert

  • Were some of you expecting a mosh pit? I think the crowd is perfectly appropriate given the material.

  • I love how he tries to reach as much of the crowd as possible. You think he's getting back on stage, and he's like "Nope, didn't get to these people over there!" Did the same in Dallas, and we went wild!

  • He knows how to work a crowd. They went from standing around to being so pumped

  • Hey just wondering what you guys do when people look at you funny for walking down the street singing " I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders"??

  • love how he goes to the only people in the crowd who give a fuck! he tried to do this in ireland and he got mobbed, this crowd is waaaay too civil!

  • Orgasam at 0:25

  • The guy at 0:27 is thinking he might get sexy-time with the girl next to him

  • @FaithDead Ha! love the good call mate!

  • I saw them at Lolla and he is honestly one of the MOST INCREDIBLE singers I have ever heard live, but he was SO smashed it's not even funny!

  • the drummer is the reincarnation of John Lennon

  • @idiotsrus92 thanks for pointing that out. I don't think ANYONE has EVER thought or said that before.

  • @RckLbstr yep, not a problem there. glad to do my part.

  • why didn't he like that hat?

  • saw them play this at radio city a month ago and then in montreal for osheaga. they were fantastic. it's a shame this crowd is so out of it.

  • he looks pretty out of it

  • They played this song yesterday in Utrecht. He went through the crowd. But he isn't the tallest person around (dutch crowd 6,4ft is pretty normal) so practically nobody could see where he went. Most assumed he was just a couple of feat before the stage, so three chicks near the exit got the shit scared right out of them when he suddenly popped/rampaged up on the other side of the crowd, they didn't know how to react. So had a good laugh.

    Was a great preformance.

  • this crowd is lame. as if they've never heard of the National before.

  • I can't stop watching this!! Williamsburg hipster audience from hell and all. I think my man might have had a few drinks before he went on stage..

  • @ilexgp64 lol a critic called Berninger "wine-soaked"

  • @KidASquared to paraphrasse Lincoln, "Find out what he's drinking and give it to some of my other musicians."

  • Comment removed

  • You sir, @ 0:09, you should be rewarded for actually showing a band you care about their musics

  • where the fuck did they get that crowd from? I thought Manchester was bad- but that's something else.

  • wtf..peole like this ? why did click on this video lol < back

  • Thats a ridiculously long mic cord

  • For some reason the singer loses a couple of points with me when he knocks that hat off his head. Wish he would've kept it on, would've been funny.

  • @abegoya have fun getting someone elses random head lice.

  • For some reason the singer loses a couple of points with me when he knocks that hat off his head. Wish he would've kept it on, would've been funny.

  • FUCK YES

  • I wish he'd shave that stupid beard

  • @xplosion0202 the beard is awesome!

  • it was a great show.. i'll always remember it

  • I want to high five the guy at 0:09 - 0:13. You can tell he loved the whole gig, camera kept showing him to make up for the people who just stood there like :|

  • the intimacy displayed between the band and hte fans makes me want to go to their shows

  • Haha, the Brooklyn Academy are such squares. Great performance.

  • the hat didn't phase him one bit.

  • Love the disapproving head shake at 2:32

  • @mongrelcat12 Saw that. Loved that.

  • @mongrelcat12 funny that head shake pisses me off. Some fuckin tough guy who thinks he's with the CIA keeping tabs on the president.

  • @daddycubjudah Could not agree more. Just another jumped up moron.

  • @daddycubjudah Could not agree more.

  • Yeh, me too, don't think they knew how lucky they were, this is special stuff, Ive seen them twice & cant wait to see them in Glasgow later this year.

  • It upsets me to see this crowd so lifeless. I'd have given a toe or finger to be there...

  • There was NO sign of Red Hot's presence except the VERY brief mention onstage by the band... MEANWHILE AMEX was whoring itself all over the venue... private amex parties all over, not ONE Red Hot brochure to be found. If you want to give your part of the ticket sales to Red Hot, that's a GREAT thing, but don't blur the Amex promo gigs with what could otherwise be a true fundraising event. I walked out of the show not seeing ONE Red Hot logo, BUT I can DEFINITELY describe an Amex ZYNC logo.

  • epic when someone puts the hat on him

  • What a dead crowd.

  • @7thFallFromSanity

they did a pretty fucking good job at reviving them though

  • @7thFallFromSanity - Agreed. There's only guy reacting the way they all should be and he even spoils that by looking like Buster from Arrested Development.

  • @7thFallFromSanity ,Have you ever felt pure and utter love oozing from a person like a lightning bolt, this is whats happening here, images of John Lennon,LOVE mesmerised all of them, all they want to do is touch him, feel the love oozing from his aura, these guys dont need to have crazed crowds, they already have what it takes to take people to the other realm of existance. This isnt a dead crowd this is pure magick..MUCH LOVE~Vlada~aka Rayvhenwing

  • @7thFallFromSanity

i watched this show online from my bk apt. and i thought the exact same thing:

    boring crowd. stupid hipsters.

  • @7thFallFromSanity At least they weren't chatty like the crowd at the show I went to :\ When the band closed w/ an unplugged version of Vanderlyle, it took the crowd almost a minute to figure out they needed to quiet down. Lots of people who were just there with friends, not really into the band.

  • I love everything that The National do, but it's songs like this (and "Slipping Husband" or "Available") which really define this band for me. So much raw energy. I love that Matt goes all the way to the back of the room carried in the arms of his cheerleaders/fans.

  • love it

  • The National make very good music, what more is there to say :)
