@oogeer nothing ..if your passionate enough for it you dont really rely on the financial aspect.. its okay to expect bucks out of it but its more relieving when you see your work getting built and seeing it being appreciated well from the users :)
I'm not totally sure myself, but i'm thinking these are interviews with 'software architects', not 'building architects'. Is so, it's fascinating, and quite revealing how many of the comments below are referring to a 'building architect'. Quite a lot of cross over indeed.
architecture is gay?? long live civil engineering?? haha. architects and engineers should work together as a team. how come there are some immature people stating those things? very immature and so unprofessional..
a: The math required for passing in Canada or USA is algebra. Calculus is a help, but not required.
b: One college semester of physics.
c: No chemistry course required, however you should be aware of some issues such as galvanic action, properties of concrete, and rust.
d: For any profession, you should go into it because you like it. Motivation is key! It can make good money, however I think that architects are more educated and have a higher IQ than their income reveals.
architecture is more like artistic psychology rather than a utilitarian practice, there's a lot more time invested in the creative processes rather than trying to figure out how to make the thing stand up straight and keep it from leaking when it rains
@jamrollz Architects need to pass Analytic Geometry, Calculus, Physics, Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Reinforced Concrete Design, Timber Design, Structural Concrete Design, etc. Those are high level Mathematics IDIOT!!! Maybe you are one of those Architect wannabes who believe finishing a short 2D-3D CAD seminar will qualify you to become an Architect. BTW, you Architect wannabes should start using the title QUACK ARCHITECT. It's all yours.
@101ers77 I just finished an architecture degree at University of Auckland. I'm still a student but I have a decent idea of what architects do and how they for there .But sure you know exactly who I am and what I think from a quick youtube comment. quack quack
@jamrollz Lol! Auckland in New Zealand! Aussie and NZ Architects are disgrace to the profession. In your country Architecture is a mere Liberal Arts degree with very little Mathematics. You were never taught Engineering subjects unlike UK, US and even Asian Architects. You Aussie and NZ architects should use the title Quack Architects. You are actually practicing Quakitecture not Architecture.
@jamrollz Lol! You're contradicting yourself. You finished Architecture degree yet you're still a student. Why don't you admit that you just finished a 3D-animation CAD training course and feel you can become one of us Architects. It shows in your profile you're just nothing but a 3D animation buff. BTW I bet you are not even capable of doing QS.
@101ers77 how is a bachelor in architecture the samething as a 3d animation or cad training course? also is it not possible to still be studying when one has finished a degree? did you not take a masters to become an architect? how do you know we arn't taught engineering subjects? did you study here yourself or something? because we've done structure materials and sustainability among many other things and we do not do any liberal arts papers.
@101ers77 also ive meet many architects none of which are as illogical misinformed or as immature as yourself. i wonder if im getting trolled by a 14 year old to be completely honest.
yeah it can make a decent income, but if you go for the income, then you should't want to become an architect... you should want it because you really want to create something that lasts!
a good architect in the Netherlands makes about 500-2000 euros an hour
The biggest thing that worries me is that everytime I learn something new, I find out how little I know concerning architecture. It is like the gap keeps getting bigger.
My friend (italian architect) says: "first of all the future architect need to choose his own "star" in his subject. My friend choosed Ambrogio Frangiolli (1798 1870) Italian decorator, architect and painter. He tries to follow his ideas. Frangiolli created his own Scuola di Decorazione (E: Decoration
school) and designed numerous interiors of famous residences in Rome,
Turin, Vienna and Milan. My friend is also going to establish his own school.
Does anyone know if their are any specific subjects that are absolutely essential? I happen to be not that wonderful at Mathematics, but my teacher who previously was an architect says that it basically only needs yr 10 mathematic level skills to do well in architecture (16 years old) Does anyone know if i should take his word for it?
You will need to take Calculus in college to get into such a program. If I could do high school all over again, I would have focused ALOT of energy on math. If you can take AP Calculus in high school, you will have a HUGE weight lifted off your shoulders when you go to college.
I am an architect and I absolutely love my job, sure I may be overworked and feel unappreciated at times but I do it because nothing beats the satisfaction of seeing a design taking shape and achieving completion of a building and those who come into the profession thinking about money primary should think twice, I mean most architects earn an above average living but the big money comes if they are partners or own a firm. My advice: Architecture is only for those with enough passion for it.
hey...dunno if you have the time, but i have a few questions. i really want to do something that i wont be dissapointing about. i love making stuff up...inventing, and trying to squeze the best out of things (a perfectionist) and i love geometry, but im also tragicaly bad with words.....id love scenario changes in a job and not doing the same thing....i know you're not a guid or something, but in comparation to your personality, do you think architect would fit me....thx
Honestly Design Architecture is not just about designing a building, but it also involves a lot of communication and patience as you tend to deal a many "interesting" characters (e.g. clients, contractors, other consultants) in the field and it can be a tad frustrating sometimes but as I said at the end of the day its whether you have enough passion for it.
Seeing that you got a thing for geometry that's a start, next would be to work on communication skills and presenting your idea well cuz sometimes you need to talk to clueless but demanding people. Enroll for a CAD course and probably try a PT job at a firm, u know see the action firsthand and talk to a local Architect if you know one(suggestion) before enrolling for Arch School cuz its quite a long process and tedious one before you actually become a certified architect. That's how I started :)
hey i hope you dont mind about these, but I wanna ask a question, im going to be a college soon and my first course choiced was an Architect, does architect fits to me? I have no problem at drawing thats one of my skills, second is being creative and inventing something through my mind, im not bad at math too, but im not satisfied if i'll get sure at math of Arch. if that is very hard, (especially calculus) or the other subject. i hope it wont be problem at all. thanks

Never let someone who comes from a engineering background design a building the two professions are different.
need to be able to:
be creative
problem solve
have lots of ambition, stamina and thick skin
understand how to convey ideas visually and verbally
understand technology
you dont need physics or maths really but understand some principles so you can communicate with engineers, surveyors, lighting designers etc.

There is no specific subject that you have to have practised to be an architect
1. Common sense maths will do. So that you don't end up designing something that is impossible to be done.
2. No art skills needed. Everything is done in computer and its something learned when undertaking architecture at university/college.

Architecture will either make you or brake you! To be An Architect most important is.
1.Dedication: Most architect students are known as aliens, where they would disappear and work long hours after college or at home.
2.Organisation/Communication: Have a timeplan. Communication via (design)proposal/oral.
3.Perspective thinking: Ideally interpret these role model to your approach: Poet.Composer.Scientist.Geologist.Actor.Painter.Comedian.Historian.
4.Think outside the box *Literately*

actually, for a white collar profession, architects do not earn very much.
typically, the starting salary of an architect will be higher than that of his peers, but will top off more quickly than other professions.
