There are so many glorious sections in this that it is difficult to identify a single stand out piece, but if I were pressed to do so, 6:00-6:35 is purely exhilarating.
Speeding ticket? But yes the Russian horn sounds much more fitting and expressive for the solo. I just wish Mravinsky wouldn't be afraid to lose his cool and take this movement slower and deeper. Still an outstanding performance though; he really gets that orchstra to play.
That horn melody is sheer magic, especially played by a Russian player with that thin, vibrato sound - as Tchaikovsky would have envisaged it! Then at the end the clarinet comes in with beautiful counter melody - what a genius!! And what a wonderful performance
