Usually when you see lone male lions hunting like that they have been evicted from the pride. I assume he was most likely injured in a fight with another lion. A baby buffalo hunt would not have caused such damage. Hyenas are cowardly but also smart. He is trying to get it away from them. In his current state, he will tire quickly and be forced to either lay down and eat it or drop it and escape unharmed. He'd be wise to choose the latter, those hyenas are NOT going to let him eat the kill.

its amazing that all those hyenas dont try to take that kill,there must be an absolute in built fear of male lions in each hyena,and the big male lion didnt lok at all fussed by the attention of the hyenas.......do you know if the lion recovered?

@bigcatsliontiger this is a adult female lion. no matter that its female lion, she should be still much stronger than a baboon. but she was scared, and she only get brave after the rest of the pride arrived. lions are only brave in the pride, because they can outnumber their enemy. but a single lion, even male lions, are not so brave as you think.

@ashdog236 I agree with you, but at the same time their power is strength in numbers so they don't wanna risk losing 2 or 3 possibly even 4 members of the clan for a buffalo calf. Not to mention it's easy for us to sit here nice and safe when we aren't the ones out there dealing with these situations on a daily basis.

These 2 balance each other out. There is a 5 or 6 part Hyena vs Lion thing on here from National Geographic. They battle often and each are more than capable of defeating the other.

I know they generally avoid male lions due to their size and aggressiveness but on that series a male lion was mauling the hyena matriarch and 2 other hyenas charged in and ran him off.

Against a pack of lioness hyenas are agressive, but with only a single male lion hyenas are calm down.

We saw the hyenas heading toward the lion when we were quite far away from this so I am quite sure there was no fight between the hyenas and the lion before we got there. Its most likely that the lion was injured killing the buffalo. Its unusual for a male lion to be alone with no other sign of a pride around when he is under threat. Its likely that the lion is a loner and has therefore had to hunt alone making it more likely he will be injured.

Yeah man, hyenas were all chicken there, and also very rare for a lone lion even male lion to hunt a buffalo alone, maybe the hyenas killed the bufalo and lion stealed it

Clans of Hyenas could easily kill a male Lion if they wanted to, but they'd most likely lose 2 or 3 members in the fight. The Hyena's power is strength in numbers and they can't afford to lose 2 or 3 Hyenas every day when they clash with Lions so they are just patient.

Yes, quite surprising, although they probley know thet are fairley safe unless they attack the lion. I have a video of lions hunting a porcupine that I will post later in the week....even stranger!!
