This is an awesome video of some hard working guys (& gals) realizing their dreams. I've been selected as a student naval aviator through the Marine Corps and will be attending OCS in May. I may have only just begun the journey to becoming an Naval Aviator but if I've learned anything so far it's that ANYONE CAN DO ANYTHING IF YOU GIVE IT ALL YOU'VE GOT! SO GET OUT THERE & DO IT! Great video sir!
@cspearsfly: it's the gear warning light that flashes if the computer thinks you need to extend the gear and haven't yet. If you drop below a certain airspeed, like during a landing, the warning flashes if the gear isn't down. Certain maneuvers drop you below this speed and scares the comp into thinking you're a moron trying to land without your gear. Sounds stupid, but the light is there because someone actually did just that. It's also why we have "don't drink" warnings on bleach bottles.
@deathgod646 I was in Army ROTC and I had 2 guys from my school go to pilot training and both fly now and have been to Iraq/Afganistan so im gonna say no, any college should do!
@deathgod646: either works, but there is also OCS as well as a prior enlisted pipeline called STA-21. The majority of aviators come out of the academy or nrotc with varying amounts of OCS and STA-21 grads. I was a STA-21er and it works in a few different ways with you either having a locked aviation slot or service selecting with all of the academy and nrotc midshipmen. If you want to be an aviator, you can make it happen no matter which path you take as long as you're motivated and work hard
@HaterOfTheArmy: you don't need any aviation experience. You'll be sent to an introductory civilian flight school/screening (IFS) before starting with the military portion but it's still payed for by the Navy. If you already have a license IFS might be waived, but pilot licenses cost a lot so unless you're rich, just let the government pay for it. I think they also prefer that everyone goes through IFS down by NAS Pensacola so it's more standardized and they can screen people.
This is an amazing video! I'm a young woman that's a senior in high school this year and was planning on pursuing a military career. Can women fly also?? I'm definately interested and this video has inspired me.
i'm in nrotc at purdue, and i'm the flight school there. absolutely love it sir. i can't think of anything else that i would rather do. well... maybe fly in big navy one day haha
when i graduate, i'll have my commercial, multi, and possibly jet rating.
do pilots with lots of civilian experience do better than most in flight school, or do they develop bad habits that are hard to break, or both?
Very cool!!! Is this out of NAS Corpus Christi? It looks close to the coast. Looks like ya'll had a blast there. I've been very passionate about aviation since I was young, and just this year have begun the app process for the naval academy. My goal is to suffer through the academy so I can do stuff like this :)
the physical condition part. would an open heart surgery exclude me ? even though its when i was 4 and im 24 now without complications, Im finishing up my bachelors and am considering joining the NAVY to become a pilot
@PlaneCDR Hi, I'm an aspiring F/A-18 pilot and would love to know what tests I need to take and pass in order to become a Naval Aviator. Right now I'm in High School and planning on going to a 4 year college and taking ROTC programs while in college and have a lateral transfer to the Navy.
@Legendary588 There are two key things you need: (1) a good gpa (especially if in a technical area) and (2) to pass the physical. Check out navy(dot com) /careers/aviation.html
Hopefully I'll be going down around then too. Unfortunately it looks like they're going to put us all on IRR and make us wait until October. Either way, good luck.
i watch this video everyday to motivate me to never give up in my school work and in hopes of one day, to fly with the best. US Navy. i went to pensicola and saw the naval aviation museum and that keeps me going also.
If you are not already in the program, I am not sure. However, I do know officers whose eyes got bad over time and they were allowed to have lasik and continue to fly.
Amazing video. I was raised in Corpus, looked up in awe every time I saw a T-34 fly by, hopefully I will be attending Marine PLC next summer with an air contract.
The Primary syllabus starts with Familiarization flights, Basic Instruments, and then Contact flights. After your checkride and first solo, you go into Aerobatics and Night Contact flights. Primary ends with either Forms or Radio Instruments (you do one or the other and then finish with the one you didn't get to).
When I was an instructor in Pensacola many years ago the "FAM" flights were your initial flights, known as "familiarization" flights, hence the abbreviated "FAM" you now see. When you go to the next squadron, your first few flights would be called "FAM" flights to get you familiarized. The Navy was always very attached to acronyms. From an old Naval Aviator of Viet Nam era vintage.......good luck to you.

I am a senior in high school and am trying to become an officer in the nav. I wondered if being a trainer pilot is something that you do yor entire career or if it is just a segment?
