Ganguro style was once very popular in Japan in late 90's I remember, they just like different styles, basically there are many Japanese styles beside these such as lolita, visual key, etc. Obviously they dress the way far from Americans. Oh also many otakus over there who love cosplay.

Its not a anime character or anything just fashion style. the point the makeup was rebellion against traditonal japanese culture with pale whitened skin and being quiet and etc. But the main look the go for is a Californian girl look even thou the extreme level varies.

they are not trying to emulate african skin tones with this look, at all.

gals started tanning because they wanted to look like california girls, with their perfect tans, and it just evolved into some gals having very dark tans. but it is in no way supposed to look like black skin.

@310BPM she didnt say they were tryin to be african she said they looked like them. different influences changed the original gyaru style into different sub categories.But gyaru range to really dark to orange to natural to whitened skin. the dark skin tones were a rebellion against the pale skin whitening of traditonal japanese people, but some girls had natural to even whitened skin under the dark makeup.

Simple ganguro is cute, when the tan isn't too hardcore, the makeup doesn't look like your face just got paintballed, and the hair doesn't look like you've been gangbanged with synthetic hair && rainbows.

But don't get me wrong, I love ganguro && I do know the history/origin and stuff.

The ones who succeed in not looking like a japanese version of Snooki are the ones who do it right.
