  • wow cool

  • Good man!

  • In indiana, this is called the Tug Test. It is a required part of a Pre-Trip Inspection and is done first with the parking brake, then the trailer brakes, then both. You only use first gear (it provides the most torque without lugging the engine)

Truck Specs: 2006 Mack Vision with Eaton Fuller 9 Speed and 39 foot frameless end dump trailer.

  • awesome, just getting back into driving, great help!

  • if you leave the truck in gear aswell wont that stop it rolling like in a car? and do you apply both trailer and truck park brakes when parked?

  • @stvna8040

Some drivers just fire up the truck: if in gear it may keep going.

Always have an "exit routine" where you double check the brakes, lights, etc. before climbing out.

    All the best.

  • I bet you through a lot of clutches doing that!

  • Chock a few tires and relax.

  • @zzzmac EXACTLY!

  • The truck has 2 braking systems, the service brake and the emergency and parking brake.

There is no exit process, before leaving be sure that both the yellow and red buttons are up.

The low air warning needs to work, as this will inform you of, well. low air, before the brakes drag.

  • @--HPCSEU2010 maybe just a diffrent look at think's can help any one. i noted some negtive comments thou last time i had a rig there was no you tube

  • lol just tell the world it was swift lol.

  • Is this can be done in a truck with an automatic transmission? thanks

  • ok for all to know...when your valves pop out which it should happen around 30 PSI on most newer trucks..if one valve pops out both valves pop out indeed not just one at a time they both do...that is the point and job of the Tractor Protection Valve..I hope that helps and I love how you called it a stall test too..all this is, is a regular part of your brake test anyways...so if you do your brake test you will do this anyways..but good info for people who dont know...

  • I would really like to find out the facts on just when the truck brake pops...You know that the brake shoes on the trailer will slide in the drums if the brake pops. Lets hope anyway....If I find out I'll get back with you....I got to know the facts..Thanks for getting back to me anyway..

  • I've heard of truckers just pulling the trailer to the rest stop. The brakes don't alway applie all the way so that they will skid...So anyway you can still make it to the rest stop even if it's five hundred ft. right? The question was why didn't the tractor emergency go on and slam the tractor brakes on at the same time of the trailer time?

  • chel:

The idea is that the trailer should "pop" or deploy slightly ahead of the tractor.

If going down the road (on dry pavement) the driver should notice the "drag" from the brakes and hopefully pull over to the right shoulder.

Unless there is catastrophic or sudden air loss there should be a noticeable loss of power. At this point start looking for an "out," put on the emergency lights and do not exit the truck if stopped stuck in the middle lane of moving traffic.

  • I got a question for you . If the trailer dash valve pops out automaticly at around 40 psi and slams the brakes on the trailer, why didn't the tractor dash valve pop out at the same time or when will it....Now consider that the truck and trailer is in motion.

  • @chelsea7218 I heard some truckers will drag their trailer sometimes a half a mile before they pull over...Their

    going so fast that the trailer brakes don't have a chance to lock to the drums. So they just drag the trailer the half mile while the brakes are burning hot....but the truck pop out valve still doesn't come out got me stumped why it didn't hum;

  • Can anyone please tell me what the 6 part airbrake test consist of for california i know its governor cut-in, and governor cut-out, 4-60 applied test, low air warning device but i cant remember what the other two are.Any help will be appriciated.

    Thank you.........

  • That is correct,

if the air pressure drops below 40 psi the automatic spring brakes (in most cases, appearently not any hes mentionuing) will apply this then bringing the vehicle to a stop.

Also it depends on the age of the vehicle.

  • Nice video

  • Compounding is pressing the service brake pedal - while the parking brake is set (on).

Chock wheels and release the brakes - before commencing the leak down test.

    Good luck.

  • @insanityofnormality They have safety valves for to stop the compounding the brakes all depends how old the truck is for when they started to put them valves on the truck and the trailer

  • Starting driving again after gap of 2 years. Your videos were great help. forgot what compounding was - could you explain?

  • couldn't you leave the truck in gear?

  • Thank You Very Much For Your Videos, Nicely Explained. Keep Up Your Good Work. God Bless.

  • Great video. Chock those wheels. Problem solved.

  • great video!

  • WHAT DOES A TRUCK HAVE TO DO WITH AIPLANES!

  • @kikpik1 "air brake" "stall test" easy confusion there for some just sayin

  • @Carlton007 ur right man, it was a big confusion..lol.

  • @kikpik1 Stall test...

  • i swore i was gonna see a airplane in this video but i was wrong

  • what kind of truck were you in i might be wrong but it sounded like in a international when it started

  • @schindlerman96 a KW with Cummins pusher.

  • Thank you very much, I now preparing to pre trip inspection, and your videos are very useful

  • fuckin hopless american cockheads

  • @bcox85ify

Dude.... get your H-1B visa, come to America and we'll pay you what you're worth to haul chickenshit....

  • @insanityofnormality mate i am quite happy in australia where we have real trucks u fuckwit

  • @bcox85ify

Yeah.... they're all American made ....

I'd love to visit you chaps, but I'd be thrown in jail in five minutes because of your "speech" laws.

At least here you can still say what's on your mind if your fists are big enough to back it up (at least so far).

Say ... are you finishing your run or doing an all-nighter?

  • @insanityofnormality all american my ass im in mine right now. it was made at the kenworth factory at bayswater 30kms east of melboure and if u must no i just loaded and im doing an all nighter

  • @bcox85ify

Anyway...great trucks. We get to see the pics. KW likes to use them in their ads. Well it was nice chatting.... don't hit too many kangaroos tonight. Have a safe one.

  • @bcox85ify cpy that.where in oz u driving dude?

  • your tips are very helpfull.. thanks....

  • Doing an air brakes course tomorrow and I'm just brushing up before I go...great video.

  • i thought if loose all the air in the tank the brakes will lock it self.

  • Only if the brake chambers are in good order. You wont know if the parking brakes (spring brakes in the chambers) are working if you dont do this test as the spring brakes dont reqire air to operate.

I have had brake chambers that had broken springs that worked fine except they wouldnt hold the truck when parked.

  • @24preacherboy any brake pot with a broken spring will not hold the truck, but service brakes will work fine, about half the time the pot will leak, because the spring poked a hole in the rubber bladder

  • @momunaf Your right but I'm talking about just getting down to 40 psi......The trailer pops on ....Why doesn't the truck pop on first heh?

  • Excellent video

  • Wonder if this guy's DAC report has a few pages of terminations from breaking trucks?

Making sure the slack adjusters are properly adjusted during the required Pre-Trip and performing a leak down test is the proper way to check your brakes.

  • Agreed.

This is just one brake test - not the whole kit n' kaboodle.

  • Didn't DAC go belly up?

  • dude wat the fuc are talkn bout i start drivn tha dont say shit bout wat the hell u sayn

  • i have seen you on the road some place i worked for Wilsons truck lines

  • never mind its a kenworth

  • do you a have pete

  • Should charge (release) the trailer first, then the tractor.

  • During your pre-trip you should technically do a stall test for both tractor and trailer individually, and then also do a rolling test on your "spike" (if you have one) and finally a rolling test on your foot brake. These should be done every day as part of your pre-trip, takes less than 30 seconds.... Shortcuts lead to fatalities.

  • Shouldn't you leave it in gear, like you would with a car?

  • Never, it should always be in neutral when you shut it down.

  • how can you drive shaft twist??? never heard of a driveshaft twisting before??

  • Yea it happens. In diesel setups the transmission is a little more aggresive.

  • I've actually witnessed this. A bozo decided to hammer down in low-gear and forgot about his tractor brakes. Before the engine died it actually ripped the drive shaft apart right at the rear universal joint.

  • Thanks for posting..

  • 5 minutes of "um... ah.... er...."; 30 seconds of this stupid test. Just check the brake strokes and chock the wheels. I have never heard of a truck rolling away unless through driver negligence, or poor maintenance.

  • it dont work on my leyland leopard, if u try that wi clutch it pops out gear

  • unless u have a trailer that has an air brake system that is pre 1975 there are spring breaks.

  • im curious, in my car i leave it in gear when its parked.. does this not work with trucks? if u were to leave it in a high gear, wouldnt the pressure from the engine keep the truck in place even with pressure remaining in the breaks? that doesnt substitute making sure your breaks work in the first place, but isnt that enough of a backup plan

  • I heard you can but only for back up.

  • I like the Video, but i think you should have let the Trailer Brakes Release all the way so they are not hising or making any sounds. witch is what i do everyday when im driving my truck. that way i know that the air brakes on the trailer are truly released all the way.

and i have showed this to all of the student drivers i have taught how to drive a tractor-trailer Over The Road, when i was a (Certified Driver Trainer.)

  • isnt that hissing from the trailer filling up?

  • Yup, the parking brakes work by springs. When you "detonate" the brakes you exhaust the air from the chambers and the springs automatically engage the brake. Thus by charging the trailer (adding air) the spring brakes are released.

  • when u apply the brake how does that work ? because i know there is already pressure in thoses brakes keeping them free. so how does it work sending more pressure through the lines to make them work ? thats what i dont get. does the air from the brake lines push against the air in the chambers ?

  • Comment removed

  • Hard to explain in 500 characters but I'll do my best... The chamber is cut in half, with a diaphragm in the middle. The 60 PSI that releases the spring (emergency) brakes pushes on the one side of the diaphragm, drawing the push-rod into the chamber and releasing the brake. When you step on the peddle you add pressure to the other side of the diaphragm which overrides that 60PSI and the push-rod is forced back out again, applying the brakes.

  • Oh ok thats what i thought thanks man for clearing that up

  • No problem, thanks for asking the question. I actually did a couple videos on air brake chambers work because of your question.

  • Good vid, isnt this the same as the tug test?

  • I thought a tug test was too see if your trailer was locked on the 5th wheel

  • yes you can use a tug test to make sure your 5th wheel is locked. but in order to pass your pre trip inspection with the trooper when you take your test your requiored to do a leak down test and tug test to ensure both your parking (tractor) and emergency (trailer) brakes are working as they should be. you test each brake one at a time. hope this helps!

  • for tiffbabe07 if your driving down a road and you loose air pressure, your air brakes should "pop", or in other words your brakes would automatically lock up, there for you would come to a complete stop.

  • Thanks for the info <--<<

  • you should always test the parking brake during your pre-shift checks, just like you test your service brakes/foot brake. Get into the habit from day one and it will be a useful habit to have.

  • ya and also push rod travel and slack adjuster angle with a 100 psi application... who honestly does that everyday

  • i check my brakes daily. Simple rolling check before setting off

  • Note to self..."Twisting off your drive shaft..VERY BAD!"

  • what would happen if you lose breaks when your driving?

  • easy, your in deep shit :)

  • you can't lose air brakes while ur driving. if you cut a line, the brakes will lock up. air pressure keeps the calipers open. in the event of pressure drop (broken line or brake pedal pushed) the calipers close based on the amount of pressure lost.

  • depends if ur talking pre 121 or after

  • final fantasy your wrong. you can lose air brakes when driving. when you lose air brakes, SPRING brakes apply at pressure between 20 and 40psi in your supply pressure tanks. the air pressure above 40 psi keeps the spring brakes disengaged. When your brake valves are out, or you just lose pressure, the spring brakes are applied. pushing your brake pedal has nothing to do with your sping brakes, thats your service brakes. if your gonna talk, use proper words, and half your brain.

  • Fastman454 is right, air pressure holds the spring brakes off. When there is no air pressure to hold the brakes the springs are applied. So when you loose air pressure in the system the spring brakes have nothing to push them away. If you driving down the road and you loose air pressure the springs are applied. spring brakes are released by air pressure and applied by spring pressure. Is that right?

  • yes you are right, that fail-safe feature is exactly why airbrakes are used on trucks.

  • also your springs can come on if u have a very quick drop of a bout 30 psi (beyond hard braking)

  • Hey This is a great i will definatly use this info once i have my CDL Thnakxx In advance for all your help

    Keep on Teaching ;)

  • this is a great video on brakes please have more on those air brakes lessons thanks

  • Could you do some more Air Brake Things please?

  • this was a big help thanks

  • You are welcome. Thank you for your comment.

  • @part380 i hope your plane will be crashed.
