  • Aside from the glaring inacuracies (but then I'm a major norse nut) this seems like it could be a decent sword. The inacuracies have been mentioned so I don't need to say what they are but if they're fixed then Cold Steel has a definate future sale from me. And major brownie points too if you get it right because you've already got my interest from the meat and melon. Oh and the blade too. Gotta love that edge.

  • not my first choice in swords

  • why cant they try something hard? a melon? a paper stock? cant they take a half meter wood and try cut trou ith with 1 blow and see how it goes xD would be very cool to see how it ends

  • Little pricy for a rebated live steel blade, but wonderfully made.

  • This sword comes in handy when you have a watermelon and many guests

  • Vikings always used their swords to peel lemons (that they gathered from their gardens and grocery stores) and cut bottles of water and shit...this seems to have so much sense!Okay...I still want one though...

  • OK fat boys ~!! LOL

  • All we need is a Kenny Rogers testimonial and this could be a Mad TV skit

  • i want to chop a watermelon with a sword.

  • that would be awesome

  • ok, ive watched a few of these in a row now, and i am seriously hankerin for some watermelon and ribs.

  • I always bring my viking sword with me where ever i go!

  • @PR0XXIE ....lol do you get arrested on the way there?

  • @PR0XXIE I always bring my sword Cane wherever i go.. >.>

  • Too bad they don't sell a proper shield to go with it. What can be pieced together from old sagas and common sense suggests that Scandinavian sword styles all incorporated shields.

  • The central-groove is WAY to small, the guard is to big and the pummel is a little to small.

P.S. If any one from cold steal reads this, plz make the next model of the "Viking sword" more accurate.

  • Noted...

  • @krullboll True; Viking swords were built more like broadswords than anything.

  • @krullboll Thanks, Snorri. Sorry you had to come back from the grave to tell us this....

  • @krullboll

You should make your spelling more accurate.

  • @krullboll pommel if your english teacher read your error he/she would cry

  • @619husoldier619 Being that my main language is Swedish, I don't care. =3

  • @krullboll oh and spell 'steel' right too, thanks.

  • @krullboll : The central groove looks fine to me. The longer it is, the skinnier it can be.

  • perhaps it would be a good idea to test swords cutting ability on something that actually resembles an adversary

say, pig carcass in a tatami-chainmail wrapper

  • err they do for most everything they make.

  • icelandic viking pride !!!!!

  • get this sword and you too can cut through rope, plastic, and cardboard

  • Awesome! it chops cardboard!

  • wow it looked like very little force was used to cut the watermelon and just wondering how clean was the cut on the meat?

  • that is a really good swordsmenship.

  • they must eat a lot of streak

Personally they look like they have fun at work.Chopping and smashing shit then eating steak

  • Yes we do, I for one have been eating leftover meat for the last month or so from the shooting of our latest proof dvd.

  • Why do some of the videos have cement blocks being cut but none of the swords do?

  • YOUR KNIVES ARE MADE BY MACHINES!

  • @flip2447 no.... they have 50 old chines guys slaving in the garage ,

  • @csknives is that why you all have man boobs?

  • @csknives And the watermelon?

  • LOL! This guy's hilarious!! And the music..BAH I love it!!

  • Wow it can waste, i mean cut a watermelon. How about a cantaloupe?

  • I have this sword, it's a lot lighter than I actually expected, it's about 2 and a half pounds.

  • is it durable? cuz I am thinking of buying it. But I want a sword that wont break if I use it on targets.

  • Hellishly durable.

It will take on targets like nothing, it's battle ready. It will go through just about anything, except for a sword's worst enemy; rocks.

  • Cool. It look pretty awesome, but I am trying to decide between it and a longer knightly sword

  • Yea, their both hard to decide between, I have both and they both perform equally as good, so it's largely baste on a matter of taste.

Or, depending what size your hands are, the Viking sword might be a better choice.

My hands are larger and I got the Hand and a Half sword.

  • cool...

  • Broadsword is a term used to describe basket hilt swords of the late eras. You can't just take a European sword and call it a "broadsword", simply because they are all very different, because Europeans constantly developed their sword designs.

Japanese soldiers\samurais were quite heavily armored, during the war time. All the damage on the battlefield in melee was done buy yari and naginata. The katana was a sidearm, a symbol of power and a dueling weapon, not intended for actual battlefield.

  • So overall if you want to be prepared for anything you would want to go with a broadsword due to it's sturdiness and reliability, theres a reason a battle-hungry viking would use it you know, and in Japan Iron and steel armor was nonexistent so it didn't make sense to use heavy blades if you catch my drift... It was better to use lighter blades that could kill fast I guess.

  • No, armor became obsolete because of firearms.

  • Yeah, but not anymore.

  • @Ranziel1 yea then they wore leather jackets

  • @Ranziel1

    Negative

  • The Katana was made for Killing unarmored or lightly armored enemies quickly and with without much work. The Broadsword was created to kill or severly injure moderate-heavily armored enemies with moderate difficulty. Lets say my enemy was an armored spartan, I wouldn't want a katana due to it not penetrating his armor. Lets say I was fighting an unarmored guy, a broadsword would kill him but it would take more effort than it would with the Katana...

  • European swords made for smashing??? this myth needs to DIE. all swords are made for cutting and thrusting never smashing! thats why maces were invented.

  • but if you didn't cut through armor such as mail the force of the swing would still cause blunt force trauma. it wasn't intended for it but that doesn't mean they couldn't do it

  • Wow isnt like every sword able to cut fruit and bottles.

  • Yes and no show swords are fake.. Ive seen some of there knifes do a better job then that sword..

  • @haha48 a sword is made to be sharp but not rasor sharp seing as the kuting edge whod get badly bent fom hiting your enemys sword or other hard objekts unlike a kife thats not made to be parryd or blockt by hard objekts

  • Did anybody try CS swords in blade contra blade fencing?

I mean semi-full or full contact strikes with one blade on another, like in battles...

The fencing videos with sabres are fine, and the techniques also, but there is no power in them.

  • ziosin, and that's false. That's why everyone compares katana and straight euro analogues, European bladesmithing and swordsmanship are often ridiculed. Swords don't smash, otherwise everyone would use maces.

The term "broadsword" was first used by Victorians in 19th century to describe a sword that was wider than dueling ones, like rapiers. Katana would be a broadsword too.

The sword used in this video would weight for about 1/3 less that a katana. So much for smashing vs precision, right?

  • Wow, everybody is comparing European Longswords and Broadswords to Japanese Katanas. How childish.

The two weapons are shaped, weighted, and made differently for a reason. They have two specificly DIFFERENT jobs. A katana cuts through tons of different things, while a broadsword can smash through the toughest metals.

They adapted differently, to different aspects of combat; which evolved differently in different parts of the world.

Point being, they're as similar as a halberd and a dagger.

  • NOW, can we all just get along and watch the man cut through meat hunks?

  • GO VIKINGS! my kin.

  • How are they your kin?

  • um the fact that my great-great-great grandparents happened to imigrate from norway and denmark an had lived the for a couple centuries.

  • I didn't mean that to negate you, I was literally curious, lol.

  • oh i didnt take offence or any thing

  • ahh me too bro

  • Yeah me too, my dad is a swedish immigrant.

  • Me too!

  • There's always someone who comes along and starts screaming about how superior a katana is. The problem is they never realize how or what to compare it to. If you were to take a katana and try to fight against a medieval soldier wearing his mail or plate, you'd be shit out of luck. The katana was never made to, nor ever has been able to CLEAVE. Thus the reason broad swords and the like were invented as armor advanced.

  • Curved swords have been around thousands of years, the Egyptians took awhile to catch onto them after the Hittites put a whipping on them, but eventually they realized a curved sword of bronze was more practical, this was quite a few thousand years before the katana. By the time the katana came around armor had advanced to the point weapons needed to be able to cleave, or smash, not slice. The katana did NOT see very much battle outside of special ops and spy operations.

  • Swords were made for different purposes and anyone who comes along claiming there's one sword that's superior and somehow hung the moon over the others proves their lack of ability to see the entire picture.

  • Agreed.

  • A Katana is better tho.. atleast it cuts the meat swiftly and doest'nt require a second cut... and does'nt knock the mats off the spike like the sword in this vid did...

  • European swords are forged from superior ore and are actually meant to be used in battle unlike the katana. The katana is a decorative sword and a dueling weapon. Your average samurai generally didn't even touch his katana in a battle. He used a bow and a lance.

Sorry dude, but when it comes to guarding, smashing, thrusting, durability, and overall versatility, any European blade beats anything to come out of Japan.

It was European weapons that conquered the world afterall.

  • Unlike the katana?? are you a fucking moron??? go learn how to use a sword and do some more research b4 talking to me you scrub...

  • You're a weeaboo fanboy who knows nothing about feudal Japanese warfare, that much is obvious.

The principle weapons of the samurai were bows and lances. A katana would be a very poor sword to use while mounted due their relatively short length, and most samurai fought mounted.

Katanas were not meant for true warfare, just dueling, sport, and decoration.

European swords were actually used in battle.

I think you're the one who needs to do his research you little weeaboo shit.

  • whoa youre turely just a reatarded little kid.. the first katana was used on horseback you fucking scub.. it was called a tachi!!! everyone here will tell you the same thing.. see you just made an ass out of yourself again becuz you were wrong yet again!!! go and learn he basics os swordsmanship b4 trying to tal widely sold and used sword to day!!!k to someong of my rank.. and try atleast learn what katanas were used for too!!! the best combat weapon ever made!!!

  • Yes, and it saw sooo much use. Oh wait, no it didn't, because Japanese swords WERE NEVER USED! Listen kid, SAMURAI DID NOT USE THEIR SWORDS IN BATTLE! THEY USED LANCES AND BOWS! YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT SWORDSMANSHIP OR FIGHTING!

You miserable weeaboo shits make everyone who actually knows about weaponry look bad. Get this through your thick skull. A 2 and half foot long sword used on horseback does not work well.

European blades were superior in every way except cutting.

  • Hey, every sword has its uses, the katana is simply made for cutting flesh/bone, bamboo, and stuff like that. anything outside of its little ring of cutting and your dead. PS you'd probably look like a damn fool trying to cut through armor with a katana.

  • Because people are weeaboos who watch too much anime like you? That's the main reason. And you've yet to counter the fact that katanas cannot cut through armour. Let's not forget that they have never successfully invaded any nation in southern Asia, despite having tried several times.

And no, only Japanese things are all about the katana, virtually every medieval-inspired movie, show, book, and comic in America and Europe all feature European weapons.

  • And I still say katanas are not meant to be used on horseback, considering that katanas were rarely used in battle because they make for poor war swords to be used on multiple foes, just like almost all curved blades.

There's a reason why Europe preferred sword and lance combat over the horse archery used by every culture that had curved swords.

Plus, European blades actually advanced through time, Japanese blades didn't because their swordsmiths refused to give up anything on how to make them.

  • Not to mention that katanas were made of inferior ore to European blades. Sword smiths had to spend months just working the iron to make it worth spitting at.

In Europe, good ore was abundant, and weapons of equal or better quality were affordable.

Ever wonder why Samurais had no metal armour? So while knights were fighting in the middle east, wearing heavy mail that could turn the highest quality (still shit) katanas, Samurais were running around with pieces of wood and leather for armour.

  • Oh, and try using a 2 and half foot sword from horse back. You won't reach anyone. Longswords, used on horseback, were 4 feet long. Katanas, not used period, were 2-3 feet long.

Oh, and the reason I call you kid is because I looked at your profile. You have picture of a katana for a background and a smiley face after "Atheist". That screams angsty, emo, weeaboo fanboy teeny right there. I'm guessing you spend most of your time away from middle school reading cheap manga.

  • its true, katanas arent weapons of warfare, only of dueling with other samurai.

their fragile blades would shatter when used against european plate armor.

there are alot of miconceptions about european blades being disseminated in thise comments too. the straight cruciform swords used in the middle ages where often very well balanced and reasonable light, in the 2-3 lb range and could cut as well as any katana.

  • Part of what ur saying it true.. but, If you truly know anything about Katanas like I do then, You would know the Katanas dont "shatter" they only bend.. Broad swords do shatter and bend. Trust me... I know cuz im a expert with a Katana.

  • and if you knew anything about swords you would know that a "broad sword" is actually a modern term applied to a variety of swords none of which are really broad swords, its really just a term people that don't know any better use.

  • Ok mister i'll name the names of all of the double edge swords next time if that'll keep you from bitching like a woman. Oh' and never presume to know me ever again, that just means ur on here just to start shit like a little kid. And for the record you araprrently knew what I meant by the "term" broad sword whitch proves my point about your "bitching".

  • i was really just pissed you said they shattered and stuff easier than a katana which isn't true so i just assumed you didn't know that much about swords. Sure maybe the katana but then don't go dissing european swords, which do have more flex. and you do know that by gettting all offended i win!!! YAAH

  • Whoo was the one who got offended?? YOU clearly stated that you "Got Pissed". So my friend, who truly won? I did" not the other way around. And who ever said that they have more flex? Have you ever heard of spring steel? Aparrently not... This conversation boars me and is now over.

  • ewart oakshotte said so, and yes i am a black smith i use spring steel daily, and spring steel tempered to be hard is very shatter prone, but hard, which is why the samurai used it on the edge of the blade, the slightly softer european swords had more flex at the loss of the idcredibly sharp edge, which is why there tactics are more hack and stab based as opposed to slash and slice based. and i dont know what a male pig has to do with this (boars???)

  • LOL! Boars? But anyway, true point...

  • broad·sword (brôdsôrd, -srd)

    n.

A sword with a wide, usually two-edged blade that is designed for slashing rather than thrusting.

    broadsword

    Noun

a broad-bladed sword used for cutting rather than stabbing

  • Wow, that's freaking awesome!
