I saved this V to my Fav reason is I will go back and watch this again every so often so I just might retain these when the time comes. The knots work I would get a stick and place it in the siberian hitch that just gives me a touch of comfort knowing I will at least hear a breaking stick before I fall. Also gets you to listen for breaking sticks while sleeping?
This is absolutely perfect video except one minor flaw. One shouldn't fold a tarp or tent on the same creases many times, it can and will compromise its waterproof ability. I know theres no point in correcting a legend but im putting it out there for those who are going to do exactly as Ray does. Any trolls please hate on this comment, i enjoy being called a wanker and a chav so have at it.
Can't believe his tarp's so light and packs so small! When I was a kid, we camped out and always used tarps over our sleeping areas, but those tarps were all thick and heavy.
Hint: If you @RitchePowell will be with your crew(?) anywhere take with you some lemons. Lemon makes mosquitoes escape. You must cut lemon to 1/3 peace and rub free space of the skin.
This vid and "Ray Mears / Tarp Hammock Knots" video I uploaded is all I know of in detail on hammock. But I strongly recommend you to purchase all his DVD's!
@trollkors78, just for in case the hammock rope slips. There will be a chance that the tarp rope might hold at that point. Obviously, we're putting our body weight to hammock rope. Also, tying it higher gives steeper angle to both ends which will let the hammock more oval shape for comfort.
@RitchiePowell Most of the time the hammock is hung higher so that the hammock is closer to the tarp. If the hammock is attached to the tree below the tarpline, it will hang too far below the tarp. When the tarpline is attached below the hammock lines, the hammock hangs closer to the tarp, which is better for wind and element protection.
@trollkors78 the reason is that it puts the tarp closer to the hammock = more rain coverage. You'll find when you lay in the hammock, the hammock will "stretch or sag" lower. Therefore by putting tarp closer (seems too close) to hammock, you'll have better coverage in the event of a storm.
Im not sure what Ray weighs but the straps will hold fine. The type of webbing he uses could be used for rock climbing. You may need to worry about the stitching on the hammock though, but I have a very cheap single person hammock and it is tested for three hundred pounds. I would imagine a better quality or a two person one would do great. (Hope this helps)
very useful,will practise this locally before going into the boonies.thank you

Where can one get a high quality, light camo tarp ?
The one's made/sold in Canada and the U.S. are total crap.

@solobackpacking
Allegheny Wholesale in USA.
Look up Pup Tent. Called a Half Pup Tent, but it's a complete whole tent.
You will see it under tents at Alleghenywholesale. Weighs 5kg's.

5kgs ? A bit too much.

Question to you Sir,
If you minimise everything and make everything as light and small as is possible, Then what are you going to fill your pack with ??
Good kit is often simple, heavy and bulky. There is nothing wrong with that. Think outside the square, i invite you :o)
Here is what I say "Don't just survive, enjoy living".
Work with the nature, not against her. Don't rough it, be comfortable.
Many folk fall victim to the "minimisation-weight" trap.
You are human, you have muscles...

@ihaveairlockers
There is such a thing as being obsessed about going ultralight and carrying a heavy, bulky canvas tent.
I have a comfortable compromise.

I wonder what tarp that is. I could make a poncho out of it that would actually be long enough to use as a shelter.

That was sure good use of a tarp hammock. :)

Thanks, Ritchie, I thank you for your explanation. I thouht, that there is any additional reason too.

@trollkors78
It's not because the webbing may slip.
The steepness of the hammock is a personal preference.
To set a steep hammock, almost a chair, tie the ends high and fairly loose.
