Thanks again J Dark, I really appreciate all your efforts. Damn, I have been playing for geez, like 48 yrs and I never got anywhere near as proficient as you. You give me something to shoot for. Could you have a video introducing us to your Jerry Garcia clone guitar. I am sure it has all kinds of bells and whistles to make us drool. Some folks like topless bars, Me.....show me a guitar!!
Cool guy. I was born 1960 and honestly never cared so much about the Dead also I listened a lot to Little Feat. I will now start to listen to them. Since I am also a guitar player I can only say: good video, thanks, cool guy. Rgds from Germany
With that poor attitude, why are you even listening to him. If you really do understand the meaning behind Jerry's music and his attitude towards life, you wouldn't slam this guy. He is just having a good time and spreading the love.
Sounds like your into yourselves a little bit too much.
I'm sorry Evildingo and JDark, I was having some dark days then because of impending divorce and all, but I didn't mean to come off as slamming JDark. I think if you will take another look at my comment you will see that this was not the case, but I do get what your saying. I was only trying to tell another way to learn Jerry. An advanced player can pick it up quickly. I think JDark is a very cool dude that cares about spreading the style. I hope you and JDark understand.
that wasn't even a dead song was it? Shesh... The way I learned to play like Jerry was to throw on some live tapes and play along. He is pretty easy to pick up that way. He told a friend of mine to hold the pick tight and keep it close to the strings so you don't waste any energy and time being loose with your pick hand. You'll be a much faster lead player if you do this. study the different ways to pick strings also as this will help you greatly. Good luck!
COMarc420: He didn't magically do shit...he's harmonizing a famous melody. No matter what key it's in it would be harmonized relative to that note. He already prefaced that you should already know your arpeggios/ scales etc. This aint' for beginners...but with a decent teacher (like myself) you can learn basic positions to employ theory and pick up your keys etc. easily by ear. It aint bragging because someone finds this useful. Just get over it and learn to love learning music.
ellisoncorey .. this vid is him showing off, not teaching. Its all bs from the beginning. He picks a note. That note can be in any scale, but he magically makes it a B. He's already decided he'll play B-A-E7, but he hides behind BS. Then he plays a lot of fast notes, but does zero teaching as to what he's doing. He's just showing off. Someone had to add text to give even a clue. This video is only useful to people who can already do this. They of course will only brag, but not teach.
Every time I hear something in my head my fingers and little knowledge of what different cords are I get lost because I hear it... but my hand is like a blind man trying to drive. I like to try and learn on line (because I have tried the whole guitar lesions but even cheap lessons at $30 an hour I can't afford that) so I try on line lesions but then just like this guy goes off and I get lost I can't see his strum pattern. I love music so much but why do I have such a hard time with this?
this isn't for beginners... this is about song writing and theory more than playing what he is playing. try humming the notes you play (when you practice scales) and your intervals. Its all practice and feel. For me i never learned how to strum or any of that. You must listen closely to music and try to emulate it. I went a similar route that your trying- watchin ppl hands... I regret that. it takes a while but if you can train your ear thats a big help
i got ya dude, creativity, sense of the right scale with the right chord, and voicing a melodic solo, everything is guessing at first, you play what you think might sound good , them try n remember the riffs that actual do
hey can you teach me "ship of fools"? there is a mystery chord in there and none of the online tabs have it. please please? you rock man, i love your videos!
Whoops ... you're talking about his folk/bluegress persona 'eh. Not necessarily his electric journey solo style ... then I concur with you to the max ... You're right on ...
to play like jerry is like bach, it's not major, it's not pentatonic, it's every note struck as you wish, when you wish. and he does these trademark runs: f# g g# b in chord E for example. he does this everywhere and leads he picks off the chord shape he's in not really weaving independent solo lines across. and mainly he doesn't care what you think and that's key.
Thanks JD. You just illustrated what many of us have been doing-chasing chords with scales. This seems to be an endless cycle of learning in the pursuit of melody and harmony. Sometimes it sounds right and sometimes...well, it's complex stuff sometimes. Your notations on your tabs help a lot - like playing Dorian over the E7 jam in Bird Song, etc. It all starts to make sense.
ive started this a while ago with melodies like happy birthday to you and amazing grace and simple stuff like that and ive mad slow but good headway..its great practice and ear training. but its tough when first starting, for me anyway, hopefully im not just slow!
One of the best teachers I've seen.

Great work .. thanks very much ..
The only point I would differ with you on, is that Jerry heard way beyond just the song he might have been playing..
That's what distinguished him from other guitar players who played just for song ...
Jerry had the ability to take the solo sections to a whole other place ...
