  • I still love to listen to good musical melodies like this. *****

    Anette

  • Everyone thinks you are brilliant...and so do I ...!

  • How did I miss this? Delightful!

  • Great voice... well, what CANT you sing? You have one of the loveliest voices I"ve heard. Oceanically wide like Thom Yorke's. (Yep, I love his Bloom)

  • @csmsmith1 my voice is quite limited really...i'm just mindful to work within its range..and only be seen and heard doing what i can actually do,which is enough for a lazy bones like me to be getting on with.

  • well Life's a Struggle,

the 'Musicals' make it a little easier to take...

    n not get beat up!

even though i'm not a kid anymore...well kinda!

    It's still the truth...

    Tell him you love him

That's the only words that matters to each n every one of us...

    Love, m ; )

  • OMG!!!! I FINALLY found Gregory Gray!!!! I have been looking for more music for sooooo many years!!!! This i such an EXCITING discovery for me - I LOVE your albums and have been lost since "Euroflake" - I'm sooooo excited!!!

  • @christoddur hahahahahaha...and i'm glad i found you christopher.

  • every so often I must come back for my Marycigarettes fix. So fine.

  • @MacNutz2 you sent so much kindness my way today..hugely appreciated dear man.

  • @marycigarettes Rocket Science and land of the Harley's got my little brain so wired I went away for a bit so that I would have fresh ears, mentally speaking, before listening to more. I broke my fast today and have been loving it. We have many things in common and it is wonderful to hear my thinking reflected by such a beautiful voice with such remarkable words.

You give me much pleasure and things to think about as I purse my current writing of the non musical variety.

  • As always, Gregory. You impress me with your work. You are a talented poet/musician. I look forward to your next visit to the desert. Robert Timberlake

    psartbear@yahoo.com

  • Yes, BRILLIANT~!!!

    Love it, cheers~

  • I like this. Just lack a few tattoos (Henry Rollins' style), to make it all look perfect. But then again, who want's to be perfect in a world where perfection is dictated by petty souls??? Nice work my old china! ; ))

  • @bloozmonkey111 i've been so close to getting a tattoo so many times, and i've always chickened out..i know if i started i'd never stop.......cheers!!! ...i kind of liked the lyric i did here, but wish i was in a position to have a proper orchestra and arranger for it.....as mick jagger once sang....'you cant always get what you want'

  • Mary--your writing is steeped in all the things that others mostly let bounce off them, in passing...you soaked up more than most, ....and it rises to the surface like cream......

I mean that,....hollywood, faultline of the world......incredible writing, you are tops in my book for insightful thinking that is carried out in music......it WAS good, and THOUGHTFUL training...you were fortunate to be subject to them, as I consider myself to have been as well....

  • love this song and the video is very effective in its simplicity, very strong image and huge crotch :)

  • @tonydavidwood nahhhhh..not that huge tony...it's just the ridiculous tight trousers...me workin the part.

  • @readtomdotcom thanks tom...i love to sing ...everybody does i guess.

  • Man I wish I could write lyrics like that! So spot on Mary. Super inspiring! Just what I needed. Shine on you beautiful soul!

  • Brilliant

  • Oh my word how did i miss this one.

  • Lyrics like yours...and similar music to that which YOU make...is what got me into music...at all...in the first place!

  • Oh my friend this is amazing ...your voice is so wondeful...you certainly have a way with words...

    great vid too ...//;0)

like the braces..there all the trend right now..my daughter just bought some lol...!!!

  • Loved this one too. I do have a thing for strings. Lovely vid as always. You can do no wrong.

  • thanks andy....but,y'know,i can do plenty wrong, just like the rest of us....some days are better than others for us all.....

  • Excellent, my friend. Your videos are always very interesting and entertaining.

    Ron

  • thanks ron...you know i love your gorgeous guitar ...i saw jose feliciano play a couple of weeks ago in new york to only fifty people..he was amazing...i think your style is very like him..the soft sound of the classical strings...thanks for watching and writing to me,ron.

  • Ha! Jose Feliciano was very popular when I was a young man and he was very influential for me. I envy you for having the opportunity to hear him. I remember working with a house band in 1968 and playing LIght My Fire (my Hippie days).

I look forward to your next video.

    Ron

  • I love this ,...love your voice ..your style , and material . Another great video!!

    Gareth .

  • cheers gareth...i love it that you check yet again what i've been doing.

  • What an Awesome, Well Done Musical! For Sure a Fav of Mine! 5*****

  • thanks missy..i see you have fleetwood macs'gypsy' there too..such a gorgeous record.

  • That was amazing! thank you.

    I love musicals

  • 5 stars

  • thanks gorgeous...lots of love to your fantastic guitar playing self, and your sweet singing family!

  • I do love a good musical

    JS

  • oh jesus, i love this! you outta be in pictures dear. thanks for stirring a little sugar in my brandy!

    ;-)

  • nice!

  • thanks days..i think the look is a bit 'clockwork orange',which i see is a favorite of yours.

  • '7 Brides for 7 Bootboys' perhaps.lol..the notes made me think of albums I can listen to from end to end..mmm....and there is an edge to life.Beautiful

  • hi paul...yes..there is an edge to life, and with every passing day i feel i'm edging closer and closer to it !!! hahahahaha

loads of love to you dear maestro .

  • very nice. i always enjoy your notes on the side also. as far as Sgt Peppers. that was my first big record at about 8 also. a while back i listened to the whole thing for the first time in ages and was blown away anew realizing it was like listening to a movie. so many images and scenarios filling my head from it. i am still hoping to take some tea with lovely rita someday.

  • hi nate...something like sgt peppers is interesting.....the trick for me is to not hear it very often, and when i do,to actually play the whole thing and give it my full attention....its so familiar that i cant afford to hear it too often...maybe once every five/ten years...same with david bowie hunky dory or dark side of the moon.....i know every nook and kranny of those records....thanks for writing nate.

  • Cool...5*****

  • mary if you turn this into an hour long musical be sure to cast me a part lol....fantastic as usual...sweeten up the bitter taste of life what a wonderful thought. Much love xx

  • well done vid

  • You could make the phone book sound interesting. Love the look. High leg martins have a life of thier own. beautiful.

  • yeah...boots like that carry a load of cultural history...both good and bad.

  • Yeh i just like the way they look. hate the nazi asociation though

  • oh i agree entirely.......but when i think of those boots and that look,i think of glam rock.....the sensational alex harvey band...clockwork orange.

  • You must be about the same age as me.

  • fifty years old.

  • 47 but i think you look youngert than me

  • i'd like to say i wish it didn't matter, but the truth is,its very disarming ...fifty is fifty no matter how you cut and slice it...i can very much feel myself aging....mortality...the face taking on new character for the final phase..i try and roll with it and accept it,but i'd be lying if i told you its easy...its very strange.

  • I'm there with you. It seems like only a few years ago i could get away with playing the mad young thing but i just don't have the inclination any more. its too tyring. Ive swaped disco for oxo and a warm mug of cocoa. Can i write you a song?

  • can you write me song?!.....not sure...you can write youre own song....as i must write mine.

  • My friend Dandy and I used to cheer each other up with videos from Oliver. You capture that kind of sweetness in your video, I loved it =)

  • Beautiful.Great clobber you got on too.Not a huge fan of musicals myself, inherited that from dad who used to say "The Sound Of Music is not a bad film if you fast forward the singing...it only goes for eleven minutes" !!!!

  • your dad had a rockin sense of humour!

  • just brilliant, Mary! If musicals were like this I maybe'd be into them, too... first music I heared was probably Deep Purple thanks to my older brother...

  • oh yeah..black night was a thing for me....and;'child in time'....loved fireball too

  • Wonderful lyrics in here--and you really capture the musical's sensibility. Even your outfit has that kind of musical theater "tough guy" look. Cheers,

    lo

  • thanks lo.....and look! no hats!!!

  • Ahhh to sweeten up the bitter taste of life.

    CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP

    Wonderful piece Mary, rock on!

  • Nic3 1 Mary, you missed the two dots in yer tab between yt and quality lol, but your quality is the best , nicely done

    Wayne :::::::::: lol

  • ahhhhhhh...thanks wayne lol

  • Youre welcome ☺

  • Very enjoyable Mary

  • Before I read your blurb which incidentally always reads like a favourite novel, your character endures page after line of you. Anyway before I came to that, I was surrounded in my mind by the essence of the 'musical' form, thinking how my mother will be visiting soon and happening on the chance that I will take her to something and then how wonderful if 'marycigarettes' beamed out brightly on Shaftesbury Avenue and then I read your blurb. Your work always sings from the brightest of neons Sir!

  • I really enjoyed this !!! west side story is still my favorite movie to this day. I cry every time.lol

  • absolutely.....west side story has real musical class...thats the best.

  • thanks tadeusz

  • Thanks for share monello198

Amazing video and great song !

    Brilliant !

    5*****

  • The sugar is bittersweet, just the way I like it. Your music is stunning beyond compare. There's always that perfect hook, the one that reels me right in. *****

  • All joking aside, how fantastic would It be for Mary to do a complete musical ! There would be a queue a mile long down Charing Cross Road with me at the front. Dexter could be door man :))

  • hahaha...that's very sweet tim,but the only queue i'm likely to get on the charing cross road is if a open a fish and chip shop there.

  • Me and Josette would be there behind Tim and we'd bring Mikee.

And if we don't get to the musical, -It's a long way to come for fish and chips - but it would be worth it.x.

  • Save me a saveloy, better still I could come and batter your haddock. ooh Matron !

  • Beautiful in its simplicity Mary.

    Loved it mate...5*****

I keep reading that you are in the desert somewhere. I remember Kinky Friedman used to say that he'd "been through the desert on a horse with no legs".

Hope you're travelling better than that, even if it's side saddle.

    Cheers, Dave.

  • thanks dave.....no side saddle here!..i get my leg well and truly over the horse.

  • the sand!!!...now i known why americans dont have foreskins dexter.....screeeeeam!!! hahahahahahahaa

  • well y'know youre right dexter..i DO what ii want to do..but there's no virtue in that..i simply have no other fish to fry...the record business isnt interested in me,.,.i'm invisible..it's oddly liberating...and youre very smart to see that i'm simply doing what i want to do..i love hearing from you...and i'm wriiting to you from the desert at eleven at nignt which somehoe makes its all the more inspiring for me...good luck with the live shows coming up..i'm rooting for you.

  • a sweet perspective,Sir Cigarettes...nicely formed and performed! *****

  • hi tom!!!..i love this'sir cigarettes' business..no one's ever called me that before..i hope all is well in your life.

  • all we can ever hope for is that we are not called late to dinner...

  • MC doesnt know about the knights??

should we ask Sir Merlot to grant special dispensation?

  • Sir Michael of Merlot already has.

If you check one of his Knights Of The Pub Table vids he named him Sir Mary of the Fags.

  • So he is -

He's even on my list of knights in my pub table video !!!

Ah well, - I guess we've all been a bit pre-occupied of late......

  • Mary..You succeed very well in looking tough when the mood takes you but we all know what a sweet honey you really are. Lionell Bart would be proud. Love It !

  • hi tiim!!! ..i've been watching your \tims week' but havent commented yet....just cause i'm all over the place at the moment...and i9 wanted to wait and write something of substance rather than just great video ect ect.....a big cuddle to you ,you gorgeous thing.

  • Another outstanding song Mary

  • talking of outstanding songs, that last one of yours about hollywood stars knocks the socks off what i do....your terrific matt

  • An Outstanding Performance !!! Bravo Mary !!!

    (5*) Sherry

  • thanks sherlon ..very sweet of you to write and say so

  • Stunning video! 5 *s+

Certainly different than your usual, but I really enjoyed it. You supplied your usual great performance.

    Well done!

  • thanks david...yes..it felt a little different for me too...but i gotta try things out,to keep my mind stimulated...have a great week!

  • Once again I am lost for words. That was absolutely beautifully. Wonderful song, sung so well. You are so very talented. I love it.

    5***** and Faved

  • thank you darling boy!

  • You are a really talented musician Mary. Really enjoyed this.

  • cheers dude!..i try my best

  • Brilliant contrasts, Mary. The look and the background with the gentle beseeching voice and movement. This made me look back to what made me want to sing. It wasn't 'musical theatre' though I do have more time for it now...just!

I think it may have been when I discovered I wasn't singing out of tune but just harmonising. I've never been able to hold a melody.

Now, "a teaspoon of brandy makes the medicine go down..." might have changed all that! In the most delightful way.

    Thanks Ed

  • geoff..that is one wild les paul you have there..thanks for writing...melody is a tricky thing ..somedays are easier to hold those melodies than others

  • Great job, Mary! You nailed it! many stars my friend.

    Peace,

    Bobby

  • thanks bobby!!!

  • Wow!! ~ You make my ears very happy~ It's been such a long time since anyone has made me excited about their music ~ you have one beautiful voice ~ i can't express my respect for you enough x

  • thanks julie...i appreciate you listening so...i know that i only have a voice as long as there are good ears to hear me.

  • superb Mary, the image in the video along with the vocal, mixed with a musical theme, prove's music can transcend all boundaries.

my fav musical memory was listening to doris day, still the best female voice iv'e ever heard, in Calamity Jane singing Secret Love

    .Alan

  • thanks alan...and yeah for sure..you can mix the most unlikely of worlds in music

  • Oh Mary! Gawd i love how you do what you do. The way you put life into perspective is brilliant and i can never wait patiently enough for your postings. And this video is exactly why. The music and your performance was so captivating.

five lumps of sparkling sugar cubes and a million starz for our star music man!!

    xxx~Lisa : )) v v v well done Sir!!!

  • thanks lisa..very kind generous words...thamks...i dont really know how any of us do it really....we just put one foot in front of the other, dont we?!

  • Brilliant Mary! Superb atmosphere created via the setting and soundtrack, and of course, the performance and song! Funny enough, was recently talking to friends about 'how many great songs' came from musicials we didn't like! Beautiful work as always man! Pure class! It excites my little world so, when a new Mary song/vid appears! Luv and respect always man! Cheers!

  • you excite my little world too ,wild man ed......i love keepin up with you and your guitars...and you got a great singing voice too...when you do the deep low thing, its mighty.

  • I am in awe at your versatility, not to mention your animation of the emotions in this piece. Beautifully recorded and stunning location.

  • thanks so much andrew...your encouragement is a luxury not lost on me...and yes..i agree about the location, when i happened to walk past it one day,i knew i had to use it in some way.

  • I dig, I dig... XOXO

  • and i dig you ,bombshell!

  • musicals for the win!

    awesome mary :D

great work as always..wonderful to watch you do your thing :)

    cheers!

  • thanks warsha... i'm very lucky to be watched by a beautiful one such as you.

  • aw thanks haha i'm lucky i get to watch your ingenious creations for free :D

    can't wait to see more!

  • BRAVO...this reminded me of a musical set in england and i was just waitin' for diana dors to come from 'round the pile of tires with a black dress on and holding a magic wand!!...loved it!..

  • hahaha..yes paul.. but i prefer the idea of an american cop comin from behind the tyres with his nitestick hahahahahha..love to you and the legendary tinsel

  • how 'bout a chubby hairy american ventriloquist? could work...no?

  • that would definitely work paul!...i'll keep the boots on

  • Guaranteed to put a smile on this man's face! Cheers!

  • hi mark!!!

  • Being true to the musical, we wonder what you were doing immediately before and after you took your smoke break to sit on those tires and share such a wistful tune.(boxer boots!) But that's only a first impression.

Then comes the magical voice and inflections of us humanoids daring to hope and cope. This all may sound technical but what I'm saying is how much I love it. What a treasure you are. How much I make a short story long coz that's who I am....sometimes.

  • bobbie...i was changing tyres on a big truck....honest i was...honest !!!!! i've been thinking about the email you sent me...i dont know if i have all my music on my laptop here..but i'll think about sending you something you might like,if not during my holiday, definitley as soon as i get back to england...loads of love.

  • sure honey, and Dick Van Dyke cleans chimneys...just kidding you luv.

I will be patient and not nag you xo

  • you won't have to wait long bobbie,i promise.

  • i found just the thing.....i'll email you the music now bobbie.

  • Wonderful Mary, we most certainly all need a little sugar in the brandy from time to time (or perhaps syrup in the coffee).

I love musicals and have kept every programme. Sending love always. J.x.

  • thanks julia..i've kept a few programmes myself..i have dylan at earls court and shirley bassey at belfast opera house!

  • Have not seen Shirley Bassey but Dylan - June 1978 ??

  • exactly!!! he had the 'street legal' album out at the time with that lovelym song'baby please stop crying'..but i must be honest..the sound was terrible in that awful earls court place..and i was so tired, stoned and bored i actually fell asleep...but i LOVE his records..i'd love to se him in a small place..his recent records are fantastic too julia and his new-ish book 'chronicles' about his life is so good..i love bob dylan.

  • I love Bob Dylan too, his words are hard to beat.

So that's Singapore and Earls Court - next you're going to tell me you saw the original Godspell or something...........

  • its a great big SMALL world julia.

  • So perfectly beautiful. Thanks. Ciao, Marco

  • thanks marco..sweet sweet man

  • Sweet And Tender Hooligan:

I really love this very nice song you do sing in a fantastic way and this outfit is perfect !! please torture me :p

  • Wonderful! You're a star, powerful!

  • thanks eloy.

  • Thank you! That went down in the most delightful way. :-)

  • oh my..i never thought of that lina...but that's a perfect example of how these things are in the subconscious ....... spoonfuls of love to you dear lady.

  • oh mary! My first musical as a child was The Student Prince and I would dance around the kitchen doing the Drinking Song number while I was supposed to be washing the supper dishes! I've never gotten over musicals, at all -- this piece of yours is so intuitive, what would it be if you were "really into" it!

  • hi liz....it' is interesting how the musical is such a sweet part of childhood.....and y'know...maybe i'm more 'into it' than i realize or dare to admit...i remember david bowie once saying how he originally wanted to do musicals...that shocked me..but when you think about it...ziggy stardust is simply jesus christ superstar in disguise.

  • thanks mark.....y'know i've been loving your channel for the longest time...the story about your dad with the smoking and your own battle with it...it has a beautiful ending cause your singing so well these days and i just love that...love your music..love to yourself and noy

  • Being an elderly blond and just listening to Sgt. Pepper's, a quick heads up from DRC and here I am to say "Thanks"! You always make my day with your music!

  • hi herbie..i love hearing from elderly folk..it makes me feel less alone in a world full of bright young things.

  • Love everything about it! Five Stars and faved... love ya Mary.... :P

  • thanks gorgeous.

  • hi how are you

  • This was fabulous. Loved the whole scene, the music, lyrics and your wonderful voice for doing a musical. A special thank you to monello198 for sharing with me.

  • very nice!

  • I shall have to go listen to this several times again, and again and again and 55555

  • thanks man...i've been loving your channel..you get a great sound with just the camera microphone on your guitar.

  • Well done! Fine tune indeed!

    You are one real musician

    uploading videos to Youtube.

    st mikee

  • thanks mikee.....that last one you posted of your own was full of wit..i really did mean it when i said i could imagine alex harvey doing it....that song of yours too has a strong music hall vibe about it.

  • oh i love the music hall stuff..

bang out a tune and give 'em a smile...

Pity Alex is no longer with us..

    Mikee

    ;-}~
