It was a fine movie for me but I saw it with Netflix and some dickhole scratched the DVD so we missed like 20 minutes of the movie. I hope to see it again soon.
The Mist and the remake of Salem's Lot did the "small town being overrun" thing alot better. Super 8 ain't bad. It's just done to death and outclassed.
I rented this and now wished i saw it at the theater. I loved it, the kids made the story to be honest not the alien, but the fact it keeps you on the edge of your seat and it had that ET feel to it, made me love it even more. The Train crash was immense on a widescreen HD tv with surround-sound and the soundtrack is great! I loved it!
The only thing I can really complain about is that the monster was kinda "meh" design wise and was much more threatening off-screen. Also the very end was just kinda campy with the alien ship needing one frikken locket to have all the materials to take off. Just ridiculous and pointless symbolism that was supposed to be meaningful but came off as stupid.
Hmmm, critical just to be entertaining...these reviewers talk about how this film is 'cliched'...but they are fools, this film was supposed to be an omage to Speilberg...also they keep banging on about how it was done better before, but failed to actually give an example. Frankly, it is these reviewer's wish to keep their program 'fresh' 'cool' and anti-intellectual, is actually what is cliche.
Just watched it. As a 30 something, took me back to the day. I enjoyed it. Kinda wish now that I had went to the cinema and saw it. I give it a full price!
ok sumer movie, but you guys are right, it is just a rip of all old sumer blockbuster movies, and although it was good, I've seen these things done before and done better
I was actually expecting E.T. with a sub machine gun in one hand and a plasma rifle on the other and anal probe on the bullet strap and a crazed look in his eye
@salaizrm yeah you can find it on our you tube channel or you can go to spill.com and search for it in our movie reviews. We have an audio and a video review for it. If you're thinking to yourself "I need to hear this review raw and uncut!" The audio review is for you.
There are two ways to watch this movie...1) as a monster movie and 2) as a coming of age story....i think these guys were watching this expecting a monster movie and it wasnt one..so to them it was dissapointing....just my opinion
I like how whenever someone disagrees with these guy's reviews,; they automatically say they will never watch their reviews ever again. Way to be mature people and not being able to respect an opinion. It's like people have never heard of a different opinion....I enjoyed this movie but while I do disagree with them on some point, I still love their reviews.
I don't know wtf they're talking about, but I just watched this movie and I LOVED it, I thought it was awesome. I got the feeling you get when it ended similar to the feeling you get after reading a really good book where you just don't want it to end so soon because it was so captivating. If I were a movie reviewer from spill.com, I would give it a high full price. Hands down.
I completely agree with you guys on this one too! Good review. The people who say this is awesome and original are the ones that don't watch a lot of movies and haven't seen this small-town, out of space cliché done a billion times before, I give this a rental, which is not always bad of course.
I think if I had had any expectations (even low ones) going into this film I would have been disappointed. However, I went to see it for the sake of going to the cinema and I have to say I really enjoyed it. It was simply an enjoyable movie. The kids really made it and next to them the adults seemed wooden and the alien was the biggest let down I've ever seen but I still have to say I'm glad I went to see it.
funny. i disagree because the children in this film act better than 95% of the adults making shitty movies lately. best movie i've seen since kickass.
Great review guys and my thoughts entirely! Bigged up to be a film from the 80's but it never quite captured that warm feeling that so many directors evoked from that period.
I have just Seen Super 8. It's a shame it was so cheesy and Over the top, because there were some good moments in there. I agree that a lot of the stuff in Super 8 has been done to death, but I thought there was some originality in the way it was presented. The kids were actually pretty decent, and they weren't annoying. However, Corey is right when he says that the emotional scenes are too dragged out. I thought the movie shot by the characters that was shown in the credits was better.
I agree with these guys. I mean, the acting and kids were great and all, but I've seen this movie so many times done better before plus I didn't really dig the monster.
u guys piss me off right now, SUPER 8 is fantastic, it brings back good memories of all B movies, especially Spielberg films....GOD, sometime u guys go too far with your reivews.
@PAGO4EVER I guess you didn't see their review. That was one of their main problems is that it became too much of an homage than being its own film. Its like if no Spielberg film was ever made, it would not be able to stand on its own. They have seen this before done better.
Full price movie. B+ for me. I loved it. Reminded me of my friends back then and looking for an adventure. Best part of the movie was the train scene.
This is one of the times I disagree with you guys. It's worth at least a full price. This movie wasn't trying to be innovative, it's just a movie that you just don't see these days anymore. That's why I think it's a HIGH full price.
I thought this movie was better than these guys give it credit, but you have to dig the nostalgic elements of it and, if you're lookin to see a movie about a monster wreaking havoc you've picked the wrong film - if anything the monster is a red-herring/maguffin for the real plot which is all to do with real live people as opposed to CGI special effects - I know, shocking for this day and age right?!
Also, the kid actors where great - it's a miracle they got this many good kid actors in one film!
thumbs up if the skinny blonde white girl looked like et with tons of make up and looks like she has might be anorexic too,im just saying she scared me when i finished watching the end of the limitless review.
I actually can't watch these reviews anymore, with Korey constantly striking a contrast between 'Black Dudes' and 'White Dudes'. It's OLD and UNFUNNY. Go hang out with Chris Rock
I don't really like this review, I thought that the script and acting was great, so they talked over each other, that made it more realistic and if you listened well you could find that the dialogue was hilarious. To me it was not ripping off the Spielberg films at all, it was giving respect to them, and so what if it's using Spielberg material, why would you not want Spielberg?! *Ranting Concluded*
I dont agree with this review AT ALL. To me it was one big Speilberg homage, complete with a B-movie sci-fi feel that, at least for me, was a real treat. Even the kid actors were great. Like I said it was really just a big Spielberg dedication with JJ Abram's lens flares. In my opinion it was Better Than Sex. I LOVED this film. :)
thank god someone agrees with me on lthis film. too many are singing its praises. its slow, shallow, i HATED the charecters, and the payoff was not worth the time. huge dissapointment!
This is the best film I've seen in a theater in a while. I usually agree with spill.com but not this time...I'm pretty sure all the kitchiness was intentional.
I thought the sub plot with the main character and his dad vs. his crush and her dad was actually pretty deep/touching. It's always nice to have some substance in a movie.
It gets to the point where the movie tries to make the monster likeable, LITTERALLY seconds after he kills a few people. Please, it's a god damned monster. I don't care if Manson had good intentions, this is a heartless killing machine in my mind. Shut your mouth Abrams, I want to see alien guts on the screen
wow...i had respect for spill.com until i watched some recent reviews.....yes the stuff in this movie has been done but what the movie does is it tries to reinvigorate the spirit of the summer film...im not saying summer films are supposed to be complete messes but i think too many people try to look for some deep message nowadays that when they dont see it, they dismiss the film...super 8 was a fun and suspenseful movie that allowed me to just take a step back and enjoy what i watch
Guys come on? you tore it apart. They need to make more movies like this. I haven't seen a good monster movie in a while. and this over exceeded my expectations!
Loved the kids in the movie and the train crash...wish they had shown the alien more-it was pretty cool and didnt get enough screen face-time. Otherwise, just an ok flick.
Yeah it wasn't really something new and was obviously a homage to early spielberg classics but that was what I saw in the trailers that made me want to see it, and I did end up liking that aspect. It's been awhile since I've seen a film that brings me back to the spielberg goonies meets close encounters of 3rd kind or whatever, and I really liked it. I miss those films.
@heavywithfansdude their audio podcasts can be subscribed for itunes, just not on the itunes store. Go to spill.com, click on podcasts, click on the subscribe to itunes button. It will launch itunes and it will appear in the podcasts
WTF with the lens flare??? they have a good point with the annoying flare keep coming in Abrams movies, what the hell Abrams. I don't seeing any filming art form until being hilariously parody in that other 'movie' on lens flare.
lot of people are giving this movie a rental and matinee just because its just homage to spielberg but did everyone not remember that all spielbergs films from the 1970s-1990s were a homage
Jurassic park and jurassic park lost world was a homage to Early adaptations to "the lost world"
Jaws was a homage to Any monster movie before it
indiana jones was a homage to old adventure movies and serials
Et and close encounters - any b alien movie sorry spill im highly disagree with you this time
Odd. It's funny that they say the subplots got in the way of the monster-storyline when the subplots were actually the stronger.
This film should have taken the 'Stand by me' route, and would have been the better for it.
Great character development. However, for a sci-fi fan, there's definitely something not right when the sci-fi angle (the monster storyline) annoys me every time it shows up.
I was more invested in the characters, than I was the plot.
I didn't get all those old movie references, so I just judged it based on what I saw, and what I saw wasn't that good. Most of the film was all this build up to finally seeing the alien(?) and when you did it it was no payoff followed by an extremely weak/lackluster ending.
It was a fine movie for me but I saw it with Netflix and some dickhole scratched the DVD so we missed like 20 minutes of the movie. I hope to see it again soon.

Loved the kids in the movie and the train crash...wish they had shown the alien more-it was pretty cool and didnt get enough screen face-time. Otherwise, just an ok flick.

Movie was great, its a must see
DesiStunna 7 months ago
Yeah it wasn't really something new and was obviously a homage to early spielberg classics but that was what I saw in the trailers that made me want to see it, and I did end up liking that aspect. It's been awhile since I've seen a film that brings me back to the spielberg goonies meets close encounters of 3rd kind or whatever, and I really liked it. I miss those films.
Plus the train wreck since was SICK!

WTF with the lens flare??? they have a good point with the annoying flare keep coming in Abrams movies, what the hell Abrams. I don't seeing any filming art form until being hilariously parody in that other 'movie' on lens flare.

I thought this movie was great and definitely worthy of seeing in theaters. The train crash was one of the craziest things I've ever seen. =)
P.S. Soundtrack was great too. Simple but great.

lot of people are giving this movie a rental and matinee just because its just homage to spielberg but did everyone not remember that all spielbergs films from the 1970s-1990s were a homage

Matinee. Better than xmen though imo.

I didn't get all those old movie references, so I just judged it based on what I saw, and what I saw wasn't that good. Most of the film was all this build up to finally seeing the alien(?) and when you did it it was no payoff followed by an extremely weak/lackluster ending.
