ALL OWNERS OF DELL XPS 15 OR LAPTOPS WITH NVIDIA GEFORCE GT540M i need to know whether they can run games like battlefield 3 and cod black ops ._. !!!!
It's a piece of crap I have this laptop (i5, 8gbs ram, 1gb optimus, 2.4) and after 7 or 8 replacements I have had it. One had complete cpu failure with audible beeps. It barely plays video and the fan noise is unreal and every 10 seconds. Loading webpages is even a problem for this piece of crap. You can use Firefox, Opera, Safari or Chrome without freezes or lock ups. IE requires a repair every so often. Don't plan to do any video editing or word processing either. It is useless.
No number pad, and only having 3 usb ports is kind of a deal breaker, but I really want that 1080p screen. Waiting till Ivy Bridge to make a purchase so hoping Dell makes some changes.
How's your dvd playback? I've got one of these laptops and films look pretty naff, Seems slightly out of focus and very grainy on dark images. All dvd films I've tried look as bad. However games and web browsing etc look fine. I have the 1080p screen
@MagicMisery0 You're probably being a victim of 480p playback on a 1080p screen. Most televisors use post-processor chips to improve image output wich isn't the case for notebooks. If you got the blu-ray drive try it and see if the problems persists..
@cardosy Hi man. I do have a blu-ray drive..... Full hd films look alright, but still a bit grainy. In fact blu-rays on my machine look morre like dvd's. I dunno, maybe I'm going crazy with ocd and losing the plot. One thing all potential Dell owners should note is that their customer service is fantastic!

( original was standard 1366-768), drivers, different media players, or codecs. I can only think it's some motherbaord issue. But if that was the case, every other xps owner would have a sucky movie playback?!? Dell are kindly offering me a replacement system.
Looking at ordering one of these, I do some gaming on it but not a whole lot. I was wondering about how good it handles heat? I have an Hp g62 right now and its just went through its second hard drive, possibly from heat? Thanks.
@rj17ancheta at dell home shop I found only 2 options: Nvidia GT 525M 1gb Nvidia GT 540 2gb. But if you are still not happy with them you can overclock the 540 and make it work as a 555 (i havent overclocked mine, i just heard of) anyways you can see their performance in games here in youtube, and as for me the 525 has work pretty good
Awesome laptop. I just ordered on with maxed out specs in everything except the wireless card. If you guys wanna know how it performs hit me up and I'll be sure to tell you once I get it which will be around the 23rd of this month. I mainly got this for music production but If you guys want me to do gaming benchmarks I can do that as well.
@TheRealDarthNadeR I like dell they´ve never failed to me.... though if you choose the 9cell battery it kinda looks bad and when you put it on a table it gets odd the way it leans towards you (because of the battery extra size) and looks a bit unestable.... I know because I have one.... but even with that it looks better and everyone will ask about your laptop :D
@Dave17Slab kinda hard man, cause you can own one in 1000 or add a lot and have it around 1600.... my personal recomendations are alienware, but im a xps owner and im pretty happy with mine, im not that hardcore gamer I think

@anthonybalao If you already have 8gb, you really don't need 16gb. No one does. To give you an idea of how much you need, all current games only use about 4gb.
I like this review. I seriously don't get why people say the design is bad. It's one of the best designs I've ever seen on a laptop. The top aluminum is just like the macbook. Very shiny and nice and not too bulky. Don't know why people don't like the design.

hi, nice review, i'm about to order a similar one, but with 4gb of ram, nvidia gt540m 2gb, and i know it's not much of a big deal for gamers but trust me, when your only graphics card in life have been a geforce 6200 agp 8x, you get amazed easily, plus is the best notebook i can get for that price, BTW i'm from mexico, so wish me luck with ordering process and good quality, i dont want to have to claim warranty issues :D
@Kazjyakun i think in most cases it does, unless is an option available in customization is most likely to come with one, if not, i'm sure it will include a recovery partition :D sorry for my bad english i'm from mexico :)

I've got the i5 which runs at 2.30ghz(2.90ghz with the intell turbo boost) and the i7 runs at the same speed? whats the difference between them? And I will agree the speakers in this computer are f***ing amazing!!!!!!!!!
I would recommend this computer to anybody and I mine came with the option for the best video card out same that they put in their alienware gaming notebooks and mine also came with 3d capability does that mean if i get a 3d dvd put glasses on it will be in 3d ?
On 1st September 2011, I have also received my Dell XPS L502x with core I5, 6 GB RAM, 1 GB video card. I have experiencing fan noise issue with this system.
I talked with Dell support but not fixed.

Check out the notebookreview website forums under the
Dell > DELL XPS and Studio XPS threads. There is a lot of info there about the fan on/off problem. You may find your answer here. Many have been able to fix the problem without needing to send the notebook back.
@mrSniperscope well essentialy if you want a decent laptop the cards will not come with and IGP (integrated grapics processor) meaning it has a dedicated graphics card onto motherboard vs the actual cpu, so then the main diffrence would be speed, but in the case you do need and cpu with and IGP which would mean the laptop you want dosent come with a dosent come with a dedicated graphics card the i7 would be a bit faster just cause it can do faster execution processes but minimal enhnacement.

@scorpionx79 Just mine today.. and I gotta agree with you, it is so unpleasant with the on/off fan spin, its audible to a point of annoyance, even checking upon the core temp, its freaking +50 during idle and reach easily to 70 during surfing/vids...absolutely crap! Havent tried with Prime and I dont believe it can hold the max load, perhaps even throttling down due to insane temps. FOr anyone thinking of purchasing it... consider if its really worth it.
yes right. i called dell service and they are came to me and replaced new fan and new heat sink. but the problem is continue. they said at the end its ur design system!!!!

@scorpionx79 Great service however leaving the problem as it is was not what I expected. How is it that idle temps stays at 51 with speedstep enabled, and as soon it reach standard clcok 2.3GHz it goes straight to 78 degree C. That is not acceptable at all.
@naduongruto Disable the damn Core Temp and nVidia temp gadgets or any gadget that shows CPU/GPU temperature and you`ll see..idle less than 50 C and even heavy gaming(Crysis 2,Dead Space 2,Bulletstorm) the temp does not reach more than 70 C.If u still experience problems download latest nVidia drivers from their site and update BIOS to A06
@MrJovica666 Core temp use litte to less mem usage and less to nothing regarding to cpu usage, even used real temp, cpuid. I certainly doubt your advice and most basic instructions has been taken care of as you suggested(even DELLcame to fix it). Unless you have low ambient temp or having it on a cooling platform reaching no more than 70 during heavy gaming is questionable or yours does not have issue with temps. Go check notebookreview owners lounge. The statistics speaks for itself.
@naduongruto I got mine like 1 month ago and I`m not saying that i didn`t experience any problems with the laptop temperature...I`m just saying that after I disabled CoreTemp,SpeedFan and the nVidia GPU temp gadget my laptop is 75% cooler...even when heavy gaming.Before that the fans were loud & spinning all the time and now they don`t even turn on when browsing or watching a movie,now the laptop acts completely different than two weeks ago.Maybe they actually did a good job with mine...salutes!

I'm buying this laptop by dell online store but i'm still doubtful of the configuration I made for it, for example, I added Nvidia card of 2 Gb, with the idea I may need it for photo edition (profesionally) with photoshop etc., but don't know if Nvidia card of 2GB is still a lot for that and with Nvidia 1GB I would made it nicely. Another thing is the "wireless card", I chose the advanced, again just for precaution, but again I don't know if is a not necesary expense. Some recomendation guys?
Can anyone please tell me if it's worth getting a 2gb graphics, I am thinking about getting this but want to know how much the 1GB can take on games like WoW or something, can it go to at least medium graphics with a good FPS?
@Captaindudething More video ram will only help you in high resolutions. 1GB is enough for 1080p gaming. More video ram will help you in video editing.
@Captaindudething Adding to what Daumex said, the GT525M is just a lower clocked version of the GT540M. The same performance should be achievable with a bit of overclocking if you're into that. Even if you don't, I read the performance difference is around 15%, which isn't really something that's going to make or break a game.

hpdv6017tx offers AMD HD 6770 against GTX 545.. But the JBL speakers are better than beats audio i think?( if xps whether i should choose i7 over i5 & the 1080p display over 720,4gb or 6 RAM).. Please help me out .....Are the high end specs worth the money?Sdoes heavy gaming with i7 & over heating reduces lifetime of the laptop.. Coz i need it to go for at least 5 yrs without any complaints..
@rwwouw If you can afford the 80, then I would do it. If you can't, it's not a big deal. Just a slight improvement in performance, nothing groundbreaking.
Is the screen really worth the $150 to upgrade it to 1080p. i would only be watching some videos on youtube and stuff and other than that no other videos or games. so for me, is it worth $150 or should i just stay with the 720p screen?
I just returned my pavillion dv6tqe to hp, their radeon/intel hd switching graphics are garbage. My question is that does the nvidea do a good job of switching to open GL programs like adobe and such when needed (radeon will not switch to open GL programs automatically what trash)
i just ordered this laptop, with i7-2720QM, 8GB ram and NVIDIA GeForce GT540M 2GB, i was feeling a little bad cause i really wanted to pick a design for the cover but the laptops price was 1600+ already and didnt want to add another 85$, but after watching this im glad i didnt, the aluminum cover looks fantastic, just as much as mac book pro's. I have this exact same model nmber but my desktop resolution is only 1366x768. I only get 1080p via HDMI. Is this because of it using the Intel HD Graphics instead of the Nvidia card when it's not doing 3D rendering?

Someone please answer - I have a dell studio 15 with core2duo @2.10GHz and ATI MOBILITY RADEON HD4570, as you said its not for gamers, I wanna confirm if it'll faster than studio 15 or not? I actually use more emulators like PCSX2 and dolphin than PC games
U can game on this perfectly, don't let this video mislead u. I have an xps 15 with an i5 and it runs any first person shooter u trow at it in medium to high resolutions.

Would it be worth it to get this with the i5 processor, 1080p display, JBL 2.1 Speakers with Waves Maxx Audio 3 + Creative SoundBlaster X-FI MB 1, 8 gigs of ram, and 640 gig hard drive? I'm a student who wants a quality laptop that's portable as well as an entertainment hub. I've never purchased a laptop until now, so I'm not sure how to judge battery life off of the specs because all of my experience is with desktops. Thoughts or advice anyone?
@mundo31679 You don't need 8GB of ram unless you do heavy photoshop. The i5 is enough for gaming as not many games right now use even 3 cores like starcraft 2. It's pretty worth it if you can get a good deal.
I am about to order this but a bit confused about the display. I will be mainly using it for reading ebooks and listening to music and a little bit of gaming. Do you think that the 1080p will be useful for me?
@sauravattri1 The 1080p is only usefull when you have multiple windows open at once and need to multitask like crazy. Otherwise the 768p screen is good enough for most people.

@Dhruv1223 if you're getting one in a few months (not sure how many is a few) I'd suggest you keep your options open and check in weekly for up coming laptops. In a few months, newer laptops will have come out with better hardware and better performance.

I've got the i5 which runs at 2.30ghz(2.90ghz with the intell turbo boost) and the i7 runs at the same speed? whats the difference between them? And I will agree the speakers in this computer are f***ing amazing!!!!!!!!!
I would recommend this computer to anybody and I mine came with the option for the best video card out same that they put in their alienware gaming notebooks and mine also came with 3d capability does that mean if i get a 3d dvd put glasses on it will be in 3d ?

On 1st September 2011, I have also received my Dell XPS L502x with core I5, 6 GB RAM, 1 GB video card. I have experiencing fan noise issue with this system.
I talked with Dell support but not fixed.
any solution?
otherwise i think i should go for refund or replacement.

Dell > DELL XPS and Studio XPS threads. There is a lot of info there about the fan on/off problem. You may find your answer here. Many have been able to fix the problem without needing to send the notebook back.

@mrSniperscope well essentialy if you want a decent laptop the cards will not come with and IGP (integrated grapics processor) meaning it has a dedicated graphics card onto motherboard vs the actual cpu, so then the main diffrence would be speed, but in the case you do need and cpu with and IGP which would mean the laptop you want dosent come with a dosent come with a dedicated graphics card the i7 would be a bit faster just cause it can do faster execution processes but minimal enhnacement.

@scorpionx79 Just mine today.. and I gotta agree with you, it is so unpleasant with the on/off fan spin, its audible to a point of annoyance, even checking upon the core temp, its freaking +50 during idle and reach easily to 70 during surfing/vids...absolutely crap! Havent tried with Prime and I dont believe it can hold the max load, perhaps even throttling down due to insane temps. FOr anyone thinking of purchasing it... consider if its really worth it.

yes right. i called dell service and they are came to me and replaced new fan and new heat sink. but the problem is continue. they said at the end its ur design system!!!!
this is really shame form dell, they canot make smoot fan so u cant heared it at all. really i am upset. they must call us back and replace new smoother fan. IS IN IT???

@scorpionx79 Great service however leaving the problem as it is was not what I expected. How is it that idle temps stays at 51 with speedstep enabled, and as soon it reach standard clcok 2.3GHz it goes straight to 78 degree C. That is not acceptable at all.

@naduongruto Disable the damn Core Temp and nVidia temp gadgets or any gadget that shows CPU/GPU temperature and you`ll see..idle less than 50 C and even heavy gaming(Crysis 2,Dead Space 2,Bulletstorm) the temp does not reach more than 70 C.If u still experience problems download latest nVidia drivers from their site and update BIOS to A06

@MrJovica666 Core temp use litte to less mem usage and less to nothing regarding to cpu usage, even used real temp, cpuid. I certainly doubt your advice and most basic instructions has been taken care of as you suggested(even DELLcame to fix it). Unless you have low ambient temp or having it on a cooling platform reaching no more than 70 during heavy gaming is questionable or yours does not have issue with temps. Go check notebookreview owners lounge. The statistics speaks for itself.

@naduongruto I got mine like 1 month ago and I`m not saying that i didn`t experience any problems with the laptop temperature...I`m just saying that after I disabled CoreTemp,SpeedFan and the nVidia GPU temp gadget my laptop is 75% cooler...even when heavy gaming.Before that the fans were loud & spinning all the time and now they don`t even turn on when browsing or watching a movie,now the laptop acts completely different than two weeks ago.Maybe they actually did a good job with mine...salutes!

@tgautam93 For office use, with quietness being a priority/ quiet environment, you dont want this laptop. Worth buying... hmm I wouldnt say so unfortunately. However if you want it for gaming, the display does amaze me with the vivid color display. Very impressive.

It is an additional $30 in the USA to upgrade the CPU from the i7-2620M to the i7-2720QM.....any reason why NOT to do this? 2720QM has 4 cores vs. 2 with the 2620M.
Also, Intel says the i7-2720QM can support up to 16GB of RAM vs. 8GB with the i7-2620M. However, Dell's support manual for the XPS 15 says that the maximum memory is 8 GB...so what gives why the discrepancy? Maybe the mother board can't support that much memory???

I'm buying this laptop by dell online store but i'm still doubtful of the configuration I made for it, for example, I added Nvidia card of 2 Gb, with the idea I may need it for photo edition (profesionally) with photoshop etc., but don't know if Nvidia card of 2GB is still a lot for that and with Nvidia 1GB I would made it nicely. Another thing is the "wireless card", I chose the advanced, again just for precaution, but again I don't know if is a not necesary expense. Some recomendation guys?

@Captaindudething More video ram will only help you in high resolutions. 1GB is enough for 1080p gaming. More video ram will help you in video editing.

@Captaindudething Adding to what Daumex said, the GT525M is just a lower clocked version of the GT540M. The same performance should be achievable with a bit of overclocking if you're into that. Even if you don't, I read the performance difference is around 15%, which isn't really something that's going to make or break a game.

I just returned my pavillion dv6tqe to hp, their radeon/intel hd switching graphics are garbage. My question is that does the nvidea do a good job of switching to open GL programs like adobe and such when needed (radeon will not switch to open GL programs automatically what trash)

i just ordered this laptop, with i7-2720QM, 8GB ram and NVIDIA GeForce GT540M 2GB, i was feeling a little bad cause i really wanted to pick a design for the cover but the laptops price was 1600+ already and didnt want to add another 85$, but after watching this im glad i didnt, the aluminum cover looks fantastic, just as much as mac book pro's. Nice review btw

I have this exact same model nmber but my desktop resolution is only 1366x768. I only get 1080p via HDMI. Is this because of it using the Intel HD Graphics instead of the Nvidia card when it's not doing 3D rendering?

Would it be worth it to get this with the i5 processor, 1080p display, JBL 2.1 Speakers with Waves Maxx Audio 3 + Creative SoundBlaster X-FI MB 1, 8 gigs of ram, and 640 gig hard drive? I'm a student who wants a quality laptop that's portable as well as an entertainment hub. I've never purchased a laptop until now, so I'm not sure how to judge battery life off of the specs because all of my experience is with desktops. Thoughts or advice anyone?

@mundo31679 You don't need 8GB of ram unless you do heavy photoshop. The i5 is enough for gaming as not many games right now use even 3 cores like starcraft 2. It's pretty worth it if you can get a good deal.

@sauravattri1 The 1080p is only usefull when you have multiple windows open at once and need to multitask like crazy. Otherwise the 768p screen is good enough for most people.

@Dhruv1223 if you're getting one in a few months (not sure how many is a few) I'd suggest you keep your options open and check in weekly for up coming laptops. In a few months, newer laptops will have come out with better hardware and better performance.
