@texwiller42a very few forms of singing use the exact same vowels as speech, unless you are doing bluegrass or some other very folksy music. A lot of modern singers have perfectly closed e's and i's and have inelegant and unlovely singing. That said, it was a little open even for my taste here. The perfectly pronounced speech-standardized vowels are a modern styling, that does not always suit the tradition of beauty in bel canto. There is a longer, older tradition of modification.
She has her own interpretation quite different of more light soprano but always intelligent and with a marvelous voice. I loved and enjoyed this soprano in a lot of titles as Don Carlo, Boheme, Fedora, etc.etc. One of the best. Brava, Brava.
Compairing Anna Netrebko's "Prendi" to Freni's rendition, is almost like saying Sony is "almost" like BOSE.. Completely unrelated, and unacceptable. Hands down! :-D
Merveilleuse Adina sans doute la meilleure que j'ai entendu, ma préféré avec Kathleen Battle. Pour que le bonheur soit total il aurait fallu un meilleur Nemorimo (Luciano).
Don't make this about Netrebko. I think we've all had enough of her. As for Freni, she has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard, even here while she's not in her fach.
Yes, it does. Netrebko could take lessons from this. Freni knew exactly how to showcase her strengths and diminish attention to her weaknesses in this rep. It wasn't ideal for her, but she made it work very well.
I'm sure Netrebko could take lessons from Freni she's a great singer but sorry, Freni's weaknesses (and stengths) are pretty obvious here. I'm not a huge fan of either soprano but like them both. I understand there is a lot of nostalgia surrounding Freni but Netrebko, though not perfect, has a far better time with the fioritura. Her Italian is never as idiomatic as Freni's but it's absolutely fine. To my ears they both offer equally (but for different reasons) fine lyric Adinas.
God, we should all be so lucky. Glorious.

when she began with "prendi" I thought this was a French interpretation....instead of a nasal a sound, shouldn't it begin with an open e ?
hollygash 9 months ago
@hollygash, Sorry but "prendi" hasn't got a open e. Maybe in some terrible dialect accent may use open e, not in correct Italian. Ciao

not her fach? there's a huge diversity of voices that sing this role. She sang Nanetta and Norina. Of course she fits in this. She's fabulous =)

what an interesting find. This actually puts things into place in terms of the Freni-Netrebko debate. Loved it!
