Much as I love JD I think its become cool & trendy to say that youre into them.It demeans the music & the band.Even Disney have used them as cynical marketing ploy as well as Abercrombie & Fitch.Ian wouldve been well pissed at the corperate wankers.
I've not been diagnosed with epilepsy, but for many years have experienced wild spasms, jerking around, "dancing" much like Ian did. it floods the brain and makes all hairs stand up straight, while a very potent drug-like buzz moves, hovers and darts around throughout the whole body. when that "buzz" blasts it way into the head especially, it's like speed, shrooms & lightning (hard to describe). zaps and jolts, some awful, some blissful, often set-off by music. anyone else get that? what is it?
@kogiama yeah, it doesn't require any kind of drug or music. been experiencing it as long as i can remember. drug references are just to try to describe what i can't. music can encourage it or make it last longer, moving through every part of me. it always originates with feeling some deep, potent emotion, good or bad. that can play heavy into if it's pleasant and more peaceful or more dark and chaotic. head always snaps to the left. and just the left. hair stands up straight as nails.
@stradlemonkey444 Epilepsy is far from 'blissful'.When I have fits I often injure myself, wet myself, froth at the mouth & then ache for days after. Its not nice going into supermarkets & what I call 'flippin out'.People think youre a total nut case. Its a social stygma that most know nothing about. The drugs to control it are awful too.If you think youre having fits I suggest you see a Dr ASAP.It can be life threatening. For me its like carrying a mill stone around
@stevobath Thanks for your reply bro. if in your case you don't get any of the blissful mind/body/brain rushes with it at all, it's likely different. sucks to hear about what you have to go through; i've not had frothing or incontinence, just sudden jerks/snaps/spasms head to toe, supercharged. I spent ages 6-12 in a wheelchair and misdiagnosis of MD. I always knew when they were staring, commenting, pointing (subtle!). i know how it feels my friend. Cheers, my God bless and heal you.
@stradlemonkey444 i was diagnosed in 2004 with fibromyalgia, if that helps anybody with theories. thanks all. JD fans are so much more friendly than most other band's.
I call rubbish, he danced like we danced back then, geez, by this criteria Lux Interior, James Chance and many others were epileptic. Give Ian some happiness for christ sake.
@HoleHeadedLiar I know, the meds for it also added to his depression. I just didnt like them making it sound like he danced because he was epileptic. Isnt it something that we all still miss him?
@snakey319 Ian Curtis was a chronically unhappy wife beater. Yeah he made some great music, but outside of that, does he really deserve any other title?
It's reductionist to say that there's a definitive link between say Ian's demise and his passionate, artistic, orchestrated dancing. In this way this short clip IS crap.
@noiz87, maybe I wasn't sure what I was saying in it being orchestrated. But I'll say that something orchestrated can be as equally passionate and artistic. In the sense of Joy Division I think it was a passion rooted more in improvisation than orchestration (though the layers of sound can be perceived orchestrally); it appears like something, soundwise, where humans have not gone before, passionately rejecting (not sure if consciously rejecting) accepted conventions, though accessible.
This is all bullshit. Go watch the documentary "Joy Division", not this crap, really. You'll hear several opinions about the dance, and coming from people actually NEAR to Ian, like his affair and others members of the band.
@ClubViking63 Control it's actually a movie, not a documentary. And in the movie they never say why he does the dance. And the movie itself is actually pretty prejuiced or one-sided...

@snakey319 Yes, he danced that way, as everyone did. But he also had been officially diagnosed with Epilepsy during his life.

@stephenfs03 Leave out "orchestrated" and you've got it right. It's really not orchestrated, but it sure as hell was passionate and artistic.
