to me this is not sad, but beautiful, it is D major, the key of joy for Bach, but you are correct, there is this tinge of resignation or something. it is the one movement of all the suites i practice on my viola most of all. there is something to this one, as in all of Bach, something timeless, something perfect, etc.

Has anyone ever noticed how the Cello suites (this one especially) are like a sort of disguised happiness? You know when someone is faking happiness so their inner agony and depression won't be seen or noticed? That's the feeling I get from the suites, and that's why I think they're so incredibly beautiful. I mean, listen to this intently, then tell me if you're picking up on that pitifully sad undertone! It's there, and I think when Bach wrote this, he was undeniably... sad. It's amazing... :)
