  • Opening a bunch of windows and randomly scrolling around like an epileptic? Any computer, and retard, can do that.

  • coolness? Where? That's looks like shit. :D

  • I don't get it. Looks bloated, ugly and slow to me.

Don't get me wrong. I'm using Linux for 12 years now. (almost exclusively.) And the coolest part about it is that you can customise it the way you want it. It doesn't get in your way.

  • lol yeah beryl/compiz is a waiste of time just slows things down

  • @aquaphobicFish compiz is fun, and doesn't slow down your computer unless you have an old one.

  • even newer computers lose alot of speed when running compiz .....

  • Most of what you see there is the result of compositing window managers which leverage hardware graphics acceleration, and thus there is often only a negligible performance footprint for most of those flashy effects.

I do agree however that bloat can be counterproductive. After using linux for a while i pretty much use a tiling window manager (xmonad) and a command line interface for most tasks.

  • I know it's been said before but, 8 or 9 frames per second? I can not live with that. That's the kind of performance I get out the computer that I got in *drumroll* 2002, which runs on Linux, if I set the resolution up to 1440x900.

Or, the performance I'm getting out of a brand new computer running Windows Vista.

Not everyone shares my complaints here but there are two upgrade paths from XP: Linux, and Mac OS X. And I never thought I'd endorse anything made by apple, so that's saying something.

  • Oh I agree, the performance is shit. But that was an OLD computer. M modern computer does 60FPS SOLID, with vertical sync retrace so no tears or flicker, even when decoding x264 Full HD video. At 1920x1200. On a 24" monitor.

    Life is good.

  • @RuddODragonFear agreed. he has to remember that hardware plays a big factor in how stuff runs it's not software only. I guess not everyone stops to take that into consideration before bashing any particular OS based on someone's vid like this one.

  • Don't spew your shit all other the Internet. You have no facts backing up what you are saying, Linux is the fastest growing kernel on earth. It supports the largest variety of hardware and architectures. Its WAAAAAAY ahead of Microsoft and Apple. Oh and its free.

  • dude...the only reason why thats the case is because they advertise like shit

  • Linux will always trump windows.

  • Woah 8 fps.

    I'm getting over 1000 fps with my 7600GT. Slackware 12.1, KDE 4.1, Compiz-Fusion 0.7.8.

  • Well then prepare to be envious because my Gateway 24 inch monitor 1920 x 1200 arrived a few weeks ago, together with my BRAND NEW 8800 GT, DVI output, and I am going to get a computer to fit that video card this THURSDAY :-)

  • aw...... I wish I was you

  • @Steven707

OMG OMG now you can spin that cube faster and drool at Firefox and GIMP!!! So much fun you'll have!

  • Does onybody know jus what any of those applications actually do?

  • yea, ex

    Kopete is IM

    Amarok is music

    Mplayer is video

    Konqueror is Internet and Interweb

    Ktorrent is torrent

Matrix is eyecandy to look like the matrix

And I really hope you know what "just the desktop" is

  • I don't remember asking that :s

  • 1) You have too much shit on your desktop.

    2) It probably was running at 8-9 fps with the desktop recorder running, KDE, and considering the computer's hardware.

    3) Nice desktop tho :)

  • It is GNU/Linux!

  • great vid, but 9.5 fps isn't that great. remove that fake fps indicator.

  • Yep, that's gotta be fake. My Beryl benchmark is at 50fps when the bar is full. My current fps ~45 while watching this vid, but goes down to ~35 while doing fancy stuff (Wobbly windows, cube..). I have a NVidia GeForce (forgot the number) at 512MB. I am using Beryl on openSuSE 10.3 (dont flame me over that Novell crap), tried the Compiz Fusion(but that was way slow and unstable). KDE 3.5.7 (and some GNOME on the side). Linux OWNS Vista. (Mac is OK, but..)

  • its a beryl thing, and its real.

  • great job rudd!

  • much appreciated, nikita

  • do anybody know a good starer cursus for fedora?

they telled me that fedora is the best linux to beginwhit, is that right?

  • Begin with ubuntu but don't think to that you don't have to learn about linux!

  • Linux Mint (its based on ubuntu) or ubuntu, or Mandriva, or SimplyMepis

  • wat is linux

  • Linux is to Windows what Firefox is to Internet Explorer

  • HELLZ YA, FIREFOX ROXSORZ! SO DOES LINUX, PWNS THE HELL OUT OF VISTA! mac OS is pretty good also, but linex still owns.

  • a free opensource operating system that is very good and fast and beats all other operating systems

  • mhahaha....not impressed. i can game all this fucking games over the world, can you ? ^^

  • Yes, I can. For most games I use Wine. For the rest, I just boot into Windows.

  • Yes. You can use WINE, which is a near complete implementation of the Windows library, and Direct X 9, which can run Windows games and applications at 70% Windows speed for free.

Or you can buy Cadega, which will let you play any Windows game, including Battlefield 2142, Warcraft, etc.

  • Yes I can, I usually reboot or run them directly under Linux.

  • I've fucked with linux before, it's cool and all, I'm just not type-worthy to be able to install all that o.0 ... besides the fact there is no true reason to do any of that in linux or windows ... but still.

    What linux are you using?

  • I'm using a heavily pimped version of Fedora. My recommendation is that you download Kubuntu. It starts right off the CD for you to try, and it has the best and easiest installation system.

  • I've actually install fedora 7 and i love it! and ive been able to install beryl ... everything I finally get it :)

  • I think its mint linux or Kubantu

  • What the fuck is a porsser?

  • Well then more power to your dad! What's the name of the software that provides the effects? Does it run on my non "core-dou" "poresser"?

  • The software is Beryl. It will run on most processors that were developed in recent years. It runs on my 32-bit 2.0ghz AMD Sempron quite nicely. The weakest graphics card supported is the GeForce 4.

  • Actually I (am RuddODragonFear, not jsaverio btw) am running it with a GeForce 2 MX.

  • We can run all Windows games and Windows in a window or fullscreen. That enough?

  • I'm sick and tired of hearing about Linux. I don't care "How much better it is than Window". I've never used Linux, and i'm never going to, just because it's GAY! Only something that gay would have abunch of guys drooling over it. GET A LIFE! and yeah, I have a life btw, so STFU already!

  • Sure, it's gay. We Linuxers love getting cock up our asses.

    Moron.

  • heh, then why the fuck are you watching this and you dont have a life you get one, LIER

  • does all that fancy graphics stuff make you money or cause you to get less work done.

  • well wit the streamlined desktop i can work much faster than with vistas slow menu style

  • It actually increases your productivity (save, perhaps, for the matrix effect). So, more work, less time, thus more money.

  • I love my XGL/Beryl, but this video does it shame.

You can't even tell what is going on or if the cube is spinning. Up the frames per sec, and slow the vid down.

  • I'm a WinXP user, but I'm really interested in making the jump to Linux to have the kind of functionality depicted in this and other similar videos. However, I know nothing about the operating system. What Linux build is this, and where can I find good documentation on how to make a seamless transition from XP to Linux?

  • seamless transition from windows to Linux...possible but then again so is myself going to mars. Choose a well maintained distro with a lot of support SuSE, Fedora, Ubuntu to name the top runners. Learn hoe to install programs in your distro of choice then google beryl if you still want it.

  • Simply Mepis is the easiest for new users. Great hardware Recognition and if you have an ok nvidia card you can run XGL (accelarated desktop) off the cd

  • wesscoast, rgpp, jmcantrell, therealxevious: go do whatever you do best somewhere else.

Your comments are (at the very least) derogatory to the ability of the hackers that wrote the software you see on this video. I can bet the average IQ of these hackers is 50 points higher than the highest of yours. And I'm also willing to bet that they've made way more valuable contributions to the world than you'll ever do.

  • Why is it that Beryl videos attract pseudo-minimalist morons like flames attract moths?

  • Utterly Pointless. First thing i did on my windows-box: turn off all animations.

    I like the look+feel of Plan 9.

  • 8 fps, lol

  • Is it just me or is the play speed at %120? - there's no delay even when there's supposed to be!

  • You moron. This is not the reason that Linux is the best

  • just a mess

  • What's "just a mess"?

  • alot of useless eyecandy that was devleoped PURELY for videos like this.. when Apple does it, it's FOR A REASON, you have understand software before wasting hours of your life developing crap like this

  • And you sure have software understanding nailed down, methinks... NOT!

  • Ive just tried these features out, and although seemingly useless, they add to the richness of the GUI. Not all.. the matrix letters for example.. but after having wobbly windows and a 3d desktop that can tile all my windows on screen and gives me a VERY attractive alt+_tab menu.. i wouldnt want to go back.

  • This is ridiculous. I've seen some XGL videos that are ok, and they are in a entirely different league as this one.

  • i could not see anything cool, except prison break. maybe consider buying yourself a copy of os x ;)

  • Can't run OS X on my machine. It's just too slow.

OTOH, OS X does not come with the apps I use every day.

  • Can't run OS X on my machine. It's just too slow.

OTOH, OS X does not come with the apps I use every day.

  • This video sucks... Beryl/XGL is impressive but this video is a mess.

  • Tip, wanna try it out? Get kororaa 0.2 live cd, reboot your box and let it run, these effects live out of the box ;) no risk of screwing up your nubby win32!

  • the matrix eyecandy is of course just for shows. but the interaction with your application improves dramatically with the OpenGL goodness that is Beryl. You have to use it to believe it. It's a definite improvement. Plus, it taps on the unused capabilities of modern computers.

  • Because you NEED all that eyecandy.

  • yeah well... u r right... exactly like you NEED Buggy software.

on a more serious note, Beryl is eye candy if you want it to be and extremely productive, if you like it that way. Think expose' and cube for workspaces and a host of other features.

  • I wasn't backing Windows. I was just saying, all of that is practically useless.

  • @mrpiddly: that's completely untrue

  • yeah you have to be a hacker to use it

  • it is ;-) and the most amazing part is... you get to have these effects for free, provided you have a decent video card. all thanks to the X Window System hackers who developed 3D on the Linux desktop

  • amazing
