actually Americorps has been around since 1989 as it began under Bush Senior as the Points of Light Foundation which Clinton later defined as Americorps. It is not forced, it is voluntary. You give a year to a non profit organization and help people get better lives, the government helps to pay your living expenses while you serve so that you can live (since it's often more than a full time commitment) and college money after you are done. I did it in 1999. I helped homeless people.

No no no no no. Wrong wrong wrong about Americorps. Americorps is the domestic peace corps and it's been around since the end of Bush Senior's administration (called Points of Light.) It's a service organization that helps non profit organizations help communities address problems such as hunger homelessness, crime, and education/help for at risk youths and stuff. Do some research on Americorps, I served in Americorps and it is no conspiracy. It's just good people doing good deeds.

Have you read the entire bill? I feel you should. As it happens, I was an Americorp receipeant, I can tell you the new bill has some hidden twists and turns. Why sign a new bill on an old program that was working very well? I also served 24yrs in the USMC, many yrs were spent in Europe. Just be warned, when we as a people demand more from our Gov, we diminish the rights we cherish, as the Gov will require their pound of flesh. Read the entire bill, then we will talk. If you could advise me as to where it's written out for the public to read, I'd like to read it, I'm smart in that respect I'd like to see what it actually says. I know that there are countries in Europe where service is mandatory, and in these countries it's been that way for decades. I wonder what is meant by mandatory. If I'm not mistaken, more and more public high schools are making a few hours of community service a requirement for graduation. So not so terrible? Good for the kids?

Try the AmericCorps site or search the US Gov sites, it may take more time than you realize to track it down. the program helped me to go to college,I owed so much afterwards, to few choices in the Economy of the 80's, so to the Mill, this is a way to hook. I did well, but many will not, and many more will owe big bucks. Good for kids, An education that is not real, is no education! Money to help, when it's very amount ensures servitude is not help, it is enslavement by economic means. IWYW

Never seen a Brown Shirt for AmeriCorps, they're all grew or white, at least for the National Civilian Community Corps, the sector that I served in. So yes, some AC members where at the inauguration. Did any of them speak about their partisan beliefs, speak out, etc? I don't think so, at least not NCCC members without serious consiquences. Remember, for those of you who are conservatives, AC was planned by G Bush Sr, a fellow conservative, because no matter what your ideology, it's a good thing.

To any of you who are speaking of AmeriCorps as "the domestic army" and how it "reeducates" people to leftist mentalities are basing your opinions on completely unfounded information. I am an AmeriCorps NCCC alumni and it is the most strict of rules to not talk about/promote any political ideologies while representing the program. They are completely non-partisan. There is nothing more to this program than a group of adults and youth eager to help those in need and grow as people.
