  • Clara Petrella era una grandissima cantatrice-attrice,non per niente definita "la dusa del canto".

La sua recitazione passionata e molto femminile era adeguata alla sua belezza vocale.

    Una vera artista!

  • Petrella and Zeani were authentic singers.

The role of Manon Lescaut is meaningless if the soprano does not have the right sound on F and G at the bottom of the treble clef, where so much of the heroine's impassioned phrases fall.

These ladies of the old school need to be studied by all modern sopranos.

  • @allangoo I couldn't agree more. Albanese was also one of those who had that sound. (Let's also not forget Pampanini and Favero.) One of the reasons people tend forget these wonderful ladies, is that this entire era everyone was - from the point of view of sheer vocal opulence and beauty - almost completely over-shadowed by Renata Tebaldi, who was probably the greatest of that type. Still, there were others.

  • Is this live or do they lip synch in these types of videos? I always wondered that because of all ofthe movement. Opera is hard to perform I would imagine.

  • This is an absolutely marvellous performance. Thank you for sharing,

    Julien

  • A wonderful performance... Thank you!

  • But you can still get her Butterfly on Warner Cetra with Tagliavini (and a heartbreaking letterscene with Taddei). She is superb but almost ignored internationally. She desrved far more, but thank heaven for these clips.

  • And what to think about her IRIS with the great Di Stefano. And her Zaza . Clara is very, very underrated. Always that Callas and Tebaldi. We forget The real artists who sang the mopre forgotten operas like Clara, Magda, Virginea, Leyla, and so on.

  • Where can one find her ZAZA?!

  • The performance was in Milano, september 1969. I have this opera on a double-CD: NUOVA ERA nr. 2316/17. It's a combination with the short opera ZANETTO by Mascagni (My favourite composer) The CD is made in 1989. I hope you wil find it !
