The Coast Guard is actually a part of Homeland Security (formerly they were part of DOT) and only come under DoD during time of war.

Just a lil bit of trivia, during the battle of Belleau Wood in WW1 the German Army called the US Marines Teufel Hunden meaning devil dogs. There is a long history to that name I suggest you look it up in Marine Corps history. Wikipedia is full of misinformation (for example Wikipedia states there are 7 branches of the US Military when in reality there are only 4, It's written by people that don't know). Actually, there is 7 uniformed branches of the military. Three aren't in the DoD and all three of those are report directly to SecNav in times of war.
