By the way, I do not think the gambas are tuned normally in this video; probably the C string of the treble is tuned up to D, which I do when I play gamba in old-time music.
Yes, Yo-Yo Ma is playing a cello in this video, but at the very beginning he is struggling to tune a viola da gamba. I hear a low C so I think it is a bass viol Ma is tuning, with the low D string down to low C (though at first I had just assumed he was borrowing Meyer's tenor viol to help him tune it up). Maybe he couldn't get it in tune so just used cello instead.
That is a treble viol (also known as viola da gamba). It is a gut-strung instrument with 6 strings that was used primarily during the Renaissance, beginning in the 1400s, and used through Bach's time and a little later in France (with 7 strings). There's an entire movie about one of its most famous players, called "Tout les matins du monde." Edgar Meyer seems to be playing a tenor viol in the first part of the video. They're hard to tune, hence Yo-Yo Ma's exasperation at 0:20.
@dbadagna Yo Yo is playing a cello. The viola da gamba is a 6 or 7 string instrument held between the legs as a cello and also played with a bow. There are still professional players. The cello is tuned in 5ths, the da gamba like the lute in 4ths-one third. The two fretted (partially fretted) are versions of the viola da mano. Six strings and played with the fingers. The movie you refer features the viola da gamba with seven strings which was the French version (A-D-G-C-E-A-D as the bass lute).
Their live "Here & Heaven" on Fox/Huckabee was totally inspired and perfect, waking deep slumbered histories of Bluegrass music in the unconscious mind. My first experience of any of these musicians and I'm an instant fan.
What the hell happened? It sounded so great when they were messing around composing the song, and somehow they over-worked it, it lost what was a very powerful beginning from thinking too much. How sad.
Aoife and Chris have mentioned that they have sung previously together at jam sessions. To find a video of a jam session where Chris and Aoife sang together spontaneously, search YouTube with the following:
FAREWELL ANGELINA by Aoife O'Donovan and Chris Thile
This is Not a great video or audio, but it does give one an idea of their natural harmony and chemistry, and why Aoife was asked to be a guest singer on "Here and Heaven"
Absolute genius. I used to think that if aliens ever visited the earth Blue Grass music was the only hard evidence they were ever here. Now I have to accept they visited China too. Music that is a perfect combination of spirit and mortal mind. No other logical source for such perfection.
@cowgoesmoo2 You aren't listening closely enough. Chris Thile is saying, "One, two, three . . ."; However, very softly when Chris is saying "Three", you hear Edgar Meyer whisper "Don't fuck up." It is very soft.
@InsomniacCoffee Good catch. I was about to post about the same thing until I saw your comment. I knew it had to be Edgar. You can see Stuart smiling right after it.
If you like this check out Punch Brothers, Chris Thiles band. This music is HIS signature sound, YoYo Ma may be the most well known of these musicians but I assure the musical sound of every band Chris is in is driven by Chris! He is truly a musical genius in every sense if the word. If you like this, you will like everything he has EVER done!!!!
With a hammer and nails and a fear of failure we are building a shed Between here and heaven between the wait and the wedding for as long as we both shall be dead to the world beyond the boys and the girls trying to keep us calm We can practise our lines ‘til we’re deaf and blind to ourselves to each other where it’s Fall not winter spring not summer cool not cold And it’s warm not hot have we all forgotten that we’re getting old
With an arrow and bow and some seeds left to sow we are staking our claim On ground so fertile we forget who we’ve hurt along the way and reach out for a strange hand to hold someone strong but not bold enough to tear down the wall ‘Cause we’re not lost enough to find the stars aren’t crossed why align them why fall hard not soft into Fall not winter spring not summer cool not cold and it’s warm not hot have we forgotten that we’re getting old
I saw Yo-Yo Ma and the Goat Rodeo Session on fox news Hucabee's show last nite......Damn this is great ,almost electrifying when you listen and watch these talented people put together..........Wow!!!!!!
There are hundreds of YouTube videos of Aoife and her band Crooked Still. One recent video can be seen at the web address listed below:

I recently began following Aoife O'Donovan and her band of 10 years, Crooked Still. With Crooked Still she is also surrounded by excellent musicians playing fiddle, cello, and double base. The banjo player is also quite good...
omg i love this song. this album is f ing AMAZING! btw.... have the lyrics for this song been published anywhere.............any again....holy ^@#$^ shit song blows my mind!
The vocals caused me to go out and buy 3 CDs (2 as gifts) after seeing the performance on Tavis. That's frustrating when I what to skip straight to track 5. That said, I love the this and the CD's performance. I keep replaying them. Thanks to all 5.
Can I get a version without the voices? The instrumentation is gorgeous. I don't like the vocal performances, though. I heard a track without singing and was floored but now I hear this. I am disappoint.
I teared up and tried to snuff out a little squee as my husband was asleep, shaking my hands instead. Has been on repeat in a list of its own for the last half hour. LOOOOVE IT!!!!

@BongoShaftsbury1 Oh, I definitely mean Chris. And yes, I saw that performance! But I suppose if I had to give him up for someone it'd be her lol. She's a beautiful woman and an amazing musician, perfect match ;)
