  • Wow!!!What passion!!! Excellent!!!!

  • spine tingling...

    haunting melody...amazing harmony,

    beautifully performed!

  • By the way, I do not think the gambas are tuned normally in this video; probably the C string of the treble is tuned up to D, which I do when I play gamba in old-time music.

  • Yes, Yo-Yo Ma is playing a cello in this video, but at the very beginning he is struggling to tune a viola da gamba. I hear a low C so I think it is a bass viol Ma is tuning, with the low D string down to low C (though at first I had just assumed he was borrowing Meyer's tenor viol to help him tune it up). Maybe he couldn't get it in tune so just used cello instead.

  • After watching this I think I'll take my 37 years as a musician and investigate selling insurance.

  • This should be a lesson to all performers that videoing the recording session is FAR more entertaining than a lip sinked "music video".

  • What is Chris playing at the beginning? It looks like a flat-fretted, 6-string violin or something. What the heck is that thing called?

  • @dcsmitty1212

That is a treble viol (also known as viola da gamba). It is a gut-strung instrument with 6 strings that was used primarily during the Renaissance, beginning in the 1400s, and used through Bach's time and a little later in France (with 7 strings). There's an entire movie about one of its most famous players, called "Tout les matins du monde." Edgar Meyer seems to be playing a tenor viol in the first part of the video. They're hard to tune, hence Yo-Yo Ma's exasperation at 0:20.

  • @dbadagna Yo Yo is playing a cello. The viola da gamba is a 6 or 7 string instrument held between the legs as a cello and also played with a bow. There are still professional players. The cello is tuned in 5ths, the da gamba like the lute in 4ths-one third. The two fretted (partially fretted) are versions of the viola da mano. Six strings and played with the fingers. The movie you refer features the viola da gamba with seven strings which was the French version (A-D-G-C-E-A-D as the bass lute).

  • This arrangement is sooooo outstanding!!

  • I litterally just listened to this eight times...... its that good

  • Aoife O'Donovan has the perfect sound for this song. Same kind of two part harmony Thiele used to write for himself and Sara Watkins

  • @tboynew

Did Thile write this song or was it a collaboration?

  • This has become the song in my head.

  • I like this one better than the one on the album.

  • good stuff

  • This is so fine ~

  • 9 people have a plebeian taste in music.

  • love this song

  • My favorite part is when they play and sing. What is WRONG with me ? ? ?

  • Their voices sound so amazing together. I believe this is my 6 time watching the vid and I don't know how many times I've listened to the song.

  • This is the rowdiest song to ride!

  • It's Chris talking to himself.

    Sooo Beautiful

  • These are the coolest people in the world!

  • superb!

  • Geeeze! THE DYNAMICS!!!!! It just grabs ya.

  • Allison Kraussn ilove ,here they come what do i do?

  • Their live "Here & Heaven" on Fox/Huckabee was totally inspired and perfect, waking deep slumbered histories of Bluegrass music in the unconscious mind. My first experience of any of these musicians and I'm an instant fan.

  • maravilloso

  • i love the growing agitation and intensity of this song

  • Gave me chills! So beautiful!

  • Sheet music for vocals: mediafire (dot) com/?4jj2gcyc668lf59

  • @ilovetivo thanks!

  • What the hell happened? It sounded so great when they were messing around composing the song, and somehow they over-worked it, it lost what was a very powerful beginning from thinking too much. How sad.

  • What is the girl's name? She has a beautiful voice.

  • @MajicLaMa Her name is Aoife O'Donovan (Eee-fah) - she fronts a band called Crooked Still which you should check out too.

  • A remarkable song … the dynamics, the harmonies, the vibrantly rich blending with the quartet of instruments … driving to a space between

  • Oh. My. God.

  • if you could simultaneously blast this over the entire world, there would be peace on earth for the duration.....

  • My choice of music has really expanded, im a hard core rock and metal fan but i really love this

  • This and "Barton Hollow", by Civil Wars, are the best Country/South songs ever.

  • Now that is fantastic music - love it lots

  • Absolute genius. I used to think that if aliens ever visited the earth Blue Grass music was the only hard evidence they were ever here. Now I have to accept they visited China too. Music that is a perfect combination of spirit and mortal mind. No other logical source for such perfection.

  • 6 people are trollin'.

  • Love this CD.

  • This is better then sex!!

  • 0:28 Someone off screen whispers (I think it's Edgar Meyer) "Don't fuck up." favorite part of the video.

  • @InsomniacCoffee Over 60,000 views and someone finally caught that comment by Edgar.

  • @houseofaaron777 60,000 people didn't have it turned up as loud as it should be.

  • @InsomniacCoffee Exactly at 28?

How come I can only hear one, two, three?

  • @cowgoesmoo2 You aren't listening closely enough. Chris Thile is saying, "One, two, three . . ."; However, very softly when Chris is saying "Three", you hear Edgar Meyer whisper "Don't fuck up." It is very soft.

  • @InsomniacCoffee Jesus no way. Even by trying to convince myself Chris says "Don't fuck up" and turning up the volume I hear absolutely nothing.

  • @cowgoesmoo2 I've done the same and hear nothing :S LOL

  • @InsomniacCoffee Good catch. I was about to post about the same thing until I saw your comment. I knew it had to be Edgar. You can see Stuart smiling right after it.

  • Alison does sing with them...or him check out Wexford Carol

  • Have we all forgotten that we're getting old?

  • :49 Proof to Toby Keith that you can drink from a Red Solo Cup and make good music.

  • A perfect blend of classical and folk. I cant get enough of it!!!

  • If you like this check out Punch Brothers, Chris Thiles band. This music is HIS signature sound, YoYo Ma may be the most well known of these musicians but I assure the musical sound of every band Chris is in is driven by Chris! He is truly a musical genius in every sense if the word. If you like this, you will like everything he has EVER done!!!!

  • If Alison Krauss could play with yo yo ma ,that would be a treat!

  • Masterful and amazingly beautiful.

  • Holy s**t. Great harmony. The whole thing is really great.

  • Great Music !!!!

  • With a hammer and nails and a fear of failure we are building a shed Between here and heaven between the wait and the wedding for as long as we both shall be dead to the world beyond the boys and the girls trying to keep us calm We can practise our lines ‘til we’re deaf and blind to ourselves to each other where it’s Fall not winter spring not summer cool not cold And it’s warm not hot have we all forgotten that we’re getting old
  • With an arrow and bow and some seeds left to sow we are staking our claim On ground so fertile we forget who we’ve hurt along the way and reach out for a strange hand to hold someone strong but not bold enough to tear down the wall ‘Cause we’re not lost enough to find the stars aren’t crossed why align them why fall hard not soft into Fall not winter spring not summer cool not cold and it’s warm not hot have we forgotten that we’re getting old
  • LIQUID MUSIC!!! T:)

  • There are hundreds of YouTube videos of Aoife and her band Crooked Still. One recent video can be seen at the web address listed below:

    wwwDOTyoutubeDOTcom/watch?v=UXK5JjwHM88

I recently began following Aoife O'Donovan and her band of 10 years, Crooked Still. With Crooked Still she is also surrounded by excellent musicians playing fiddle, cello, and double base. The banjo player is also quite good...

  • Saw them on Huckabee.

  • I literally keep watching this video over and over. It is so nice.

  • Why is the video mirrored?

  • MinutePhysics Fuck Yhea!!!!!!!!

  • this song reminds me of a bird flying high over mountains

  • Chills at 3:02 :)

  • something. finally.

  • The vocals caused me to go out and buy 3 CDs (2 as gifts) after seeing the performance on Tavis. The quality of the CDs, however, are such that my older CD player searches for more than a minute to find an individual track when not starting from the beginning, though the player does not have that difficulty on other CDs I've recently bought. That's frustrating when I what to skip straight to track 5. That said, I love the this and the CD's performance. I keep replaying them. Thanks to all 5.

  • the 5 dislikes were just people that accidentally clicked the wrong one

  • Chris Thile

    asdf

    flashing back to Nickel Creek.

    :D Good memories.

  • Better than sex, bacon, chocolate, puppies, and anything else.

  • @chickenslaughter listen to it while having sex and you'll only have to do half the work.... ;)

  • I was brought here by MinutePhysics :)

  • I WANT THE LYRICS TO THIS SONG.

  • Just caught them on Tavis Smiley,,,

    Far Out!!

    J.C.

  • Monster band!!! Amazing!

  • so absolutely wonderful... makes me incredibly happy :)

  • They look like they are really enjoying what they are doing. And the music is really outstanding. But what the heck are they singing about???

  • this is SUCH good chamber music playing. unreal.

  • I continue to be impressed by Edgar Meyer. What an incredible musician.

  • thumbs up if you're here because you work at Starbucks!

  • reminds me of wind

  • Yo-yo Ma is a freakin' cello god. What genre can't he play??

  • Can I get a version without the voices? The instrumentation is gorgeous. I don't like the vocal performances, though. I heard a track without singing and was floored but now I hear this. I am disappoint.

  • amazing.

  • I teared up and tried to snuff out a little squee as my husband was asleep, shaking my hands instead. Has been on repeat in a list of its own for the last half hour. LOOOOVE IT!!!!

  • This is bluegrass in its most subtle perfection.

  • Holy shit this is amazing... I've gotta admit that I too have listened to this on repeat. Where has this been all my life?

  • HOLY SHIT. Crooked Still meets Punch Brothers meeta YOYO Ma. HOLY BALLS.

  • this song IS THE SHITTT! FUCKKK!

  • Just want to say again that this is my favorite for a long time!! I will post this every week...can't get enough.

  • Just want to say again that this is my favorite for a long time!!

  • O I love this!!!

  • wait. the logo on chris's shirt is backwards...

  • wwwgreatbuyoutletscom

  • this beats the fucking Catalina wine mixer

  • Powerful and fresh. This should be used when they make the high light film of the 2011 college football season.

  • Who wrote the lyrics to this? God, it's amazing. The harmonies make me tear up especially the part where their voices rise together. Wow. Wow. Buying this right now but I wish there was more Aoife on it.

  • @nevmigi I think Aiofe O'Donovan wrote the lyrics, she's credited as co-writer with the band.

  • GOAT = greatest of all time at their respective instruments

  • Amazing...absolutely amazing. :)

  • This is such beautiful music, it's so rare to find such elegant music like this these days

  • Shit hot!

  • Thumbs wayyyyy up.

  • I'm a huge hard rock fan but I'm still drawn to this incredible music. Brilliant album

  • Amazing and beautiful, thank you!!!!!! :D

  • i watched them on the colbert report last night and i have not stopped listening since

  • i could easily imagine sitting with a bunch of hobbits in a pub listening to this. XD

  • @tranerecks That's exactly what I thought when I first heard them too

  • the truest of true music lovers. no discriminations against genre. amazing

  • Thumbs up if your here cause of the colbert report

  • Aoife better stop eyein' my man! - lol very beautiful song, love the passion.

  • @billiebucket92 I'd happily be your wingman, she's my new crush. If by your man, you mean Chris Thile, I think they're in love, they've got incredible chemistry. Check out their performance on Leno/Letterman? They can't keep their eyes off each other.

  • @BongoShaftsbury1 Oh, I definitely mean Chris. And yes, I saw that performance! But I suppose if I had to give him up for someone it'd be her lol. She's a beautiful woman and an amazing musician, perfect match ;)

  • Comment removed

  • it's pretty cool, i don't like the voice parts

  • I just happened to see the ad for this album on Spotify and had a total dork-out. I got about halfway through it and had to listen to this song for about an hour on repeat. UGGHHH SO GOOD

  • @bauersnarky Dude, had the same experience, and my hour is starting right now haha

  • @bauersnarky I did the same thing.

  • I need this CD...soon!!

  • This is so incredibly good. I love it.

  • @HardestyRyan:

I think they're gambas. Not sure

  • this song is phenomenal

i can see it being a movie's main theme and playing on the the dvd's main menu with a montage in the back

  • what is the fiddle thing that thile, and meyer playing in the begining?

  • @HardestyRyan I think @Ovenmitt123 got it right: A Viola de Gamba. I'm not familiar with this instrument. I don't know if the name changes with the size like the violin & mandolin families (ie violin de gamba, viola de gambe, cello de gamba). But I want one.

  • @houseofaaron777

Welcome to the world of baroque instrumentation!

  • @houseofaaron777 They both look like tenor viols. They are called viol or viola da gamba in all sizes (treble tenor & bass) though viola da gamba usually means a bass

  • @houseofaaron777 they are all viola da gamba, the sizes are treble, tenor, bass, and violone....

viola da gamba translates to stringed instrument of the legs....

  • @houseofaaron777 The Viola da Gamba is a renaissance instrument that has enjoyed a recent revival. The name doesn't change with the size, apart from bass viol, tenor viol, and treble viol. Although the name viola da gamba is often used in reference to the bass viol :)

  • @houseofaaron777 Its usually bowed as well :)

  • @houseofaaron777 Nowadays we just use treble, tenor, & bass to designate the size of the gamba. There's also the pardessus, which is slightly smaller than the treble. The pardessus was made so viol players could play violin parts without having to play under the chin.

  • @HardestyRyan

I'm pretty sure that Thile is plucking a fiddle with frets made out of cable ties - the kind an electrician would carry around. If you've got a nice violin, you don't want to cut frets into its neck. Cable ties can go on and off without damaging the neck.

  • @pws5252 actually that's most definitely not a violin. if you look closely it has six strings, not for. plus the neck is way too thick.

  • yes yes yes. this album. I'm not listening to anything else for, oh, about a month.
