  • Can you do another one just like this...for about ten minutes? ;)

  • how do u play notes that are out of scale. like ur playing f blues but i see u using differnt nots like a and stuff how do u knoww what ones to use. like whats the formula

  • @lennon2009

Knowing all your scales/modes, playing songs (melodies), playing

"in time", playing what you're hearing, and so much more - all over time (some people get it sooner than

others, etc.) is the most honest answer I can give here.

The thing about playing "outside" (which really isn't "outside, really) is knowing

    how to play "inside" well.

  • @lennon2009 There is no formula for the blues, you just go with the flow.

  • so from what I got all your doing is going down the F Blues scale on the left hand and improvising using notes from F blues on the right hand?

  • @fromdirttodustpro1

It is an F blues, so yes, there are notes of the blues scale there.

I can't say that's "all it is" there though, and this was a snapshot of what

I played "at the time". The next time ?...will be different.

Again, just playing a blues, playing what I ws feeling at the time.

  • kick ass sound

  • If you don't mind me asking, what are you playing with your left hand right before 0:18, to lead back into F? Is it a C-G-Gb triplet? Thanks for the video, by the way.

  • jizzed my pants

  • lo tuyo es increible

    felicitaciones

  • at the gates of heaven, as you enter, you have Peter a Jesus jammin on a hammond all the way, and thats the gates of heaven

  • Nice work Joe...used to LOVE watching you at Mars Bar in Seattle!

  • Nothing sounds better than a real HAMMOND organ with a real LESLIE speaker...

    nice playing man.

  • What are the best blues hammond organ players?

  • @szaman69

all the past greats play the blues like nobody's biz I would say.

Jimmy, Jack, Groove, McGriff...so many more.

  • Nice right hand!

Move that left one up the octave & kick the bass

  • so dam slick

  • Love the sound, nice and smooth :)

  • those are some sweet audio clips on your website..........I am your new fan!

  • Love it!

I would give both arms to play with your organ ;-)

  • how would play it without arms?

  • I love the sound of a hammond , it adds so much to blues and southern rock , or just music in general . a key underlying element of many of my favorite bands / players

  • This sound is magic....I remember the '70s. Jon Lord sound in the 1970s

  • Absolutely! =D

  • that organ sounds so neat

  • i love it!! i wish i had a hammond but i also love my farfisa organ

  • they are preset keys. you can assign a preset drawbar setting to each of them. sort of like a favourites button.

  • Not quite so. Yes, these keys are presets but on a Hammond B3 they are fixed. They don't store settings like you would expect on a modern Instrument like the XK3C or new B3. On old Hammonds these keys work like the buttons on old radios and the C-Key stands for "cancel" which means switching from presets to the draw bars.

  • Not quite so. Open up the back, the presets are quite easily changeable, and in fact are designed to be changed.

  • can someone tell me why the last few keys on the right are black with white in between instead of normal?

I've seen it lots on organs

  • those are the presets, like in synthezisers or home keyboards you choose diferent sounds but here it's all hammond organ sounds.

  • actually that keys are on the left side =S

  • fantastic hammond style...oh...my dream :)

  • Buono ... Ma ... Buono...

    @Beppe

  • Great. I like the way you play and this magical sound ...

  • very good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!nice

  • what a great sound

  • Jimmy Smith's been doin' this for half a century - and he's the champ

  • This isn't JOS, just improving a blues...but, yes hes did and yes he IS ;). He's the tops to me (1964-70 especially)

  • YEAH!!!!

  • Does anyone know artists that play blues or jazz and include a Hammond organ? I am very interested in finding artists on the instrument and any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. This is a great vid.

  • Jimmy Smith!! My favorite Hammond player, also Jimmy McGriff or Medeski Martin & Wood for a more modern sound.

  • a bunch of Them : Jimmy Smith, and Super Chick name Barbara Dennerlein to name a selected few . . .

  • Joey DeFrancesco, Tony Monaco, or if you want a famous rock band, The Doors

  • yea, but the doors didn't use a hammond. they used a vox continental with a rhodes piano bass, could sound like it. pull out all the white draw bars

  • More like ELP, Yes or Deep Purple for hammond in the rock genre. Ray Manzaric used Gibson and Vox organs.

  • So what is the best hammond vsti out there?

I love love love this sound

  • NuBi LE is pretty good, one of the best free ones, just google it...but native instruments b4 is the one to buy (i don't know what it costs but its supposedly damn good)

or you can buy a spinet!

  • I've tried NI's "B4" before, it was fun. But, if you play the real deal you'll know right away what makes it real.

  • @petephax If you want the best free VSTI, couple the GTG MicroOrgan MKII with the Leslie sim from the mda plugins pack.

  • That's smoothe like buttah

  • I wish I could get someone to follow me around all day playing one of those things.

I need my own theme music

  • Do you uses scales Blues?

  • GOOD!

  • that was awsome

    sick sounds

  • Hi JDHammondman, I am 57 years old and a amateur B3 and keyboard player. I do not understand music theory, cannot read music, and tried several people online so I can learn more, but communication and other things can be a challenge. I live between Chicago and Indianapolis and have not found a teacher or anyone to help me. Any suggestions? I am in a rut, play the same old style and that is just basic. What would you suggest for a person in my situation to learn and advance efficiently. Thx

  • come on man...killing it

  • You peeled my skull and fried my brains.

  • You too?

    My head hurts...

  • So JDHammondman, I am just learning organ, and I want to learn more bluesy stuff on my organ. I was wondering, everything that you are doing in this video, is it all scales, or is it alot more complicated then that? I have never had a lesson, and dont really plan on it. Thanks

  • Just learning organ..but not planning on lessons? Hmm...ok.

It's ear training, scales, chords, rhythms, theory..within the blues.

Ya know listening to organs legends is a lesson in itself.

  • This is the best explanation possible and it's true for every musical instrument

  • dude, WHAT TONE!!!!

    awesome

  • Fm7 is the traditional blues scale (a diminished third and a flatted 7th).

  • Wonderful! Its amazing how he varies the bass all the time. I have to snatch a few licks from here.

  • hammond b3?

  • That's what I'm talkin about!! You are a great B3 player man. WOW!!

  • This is what I am talking about!! Had to come and listen again, this is one of my Favorites. Man oh man I have a B3, but cannot hold a candle to your playing. Come over to my house and give me some lessons, I know you have a lot of time. I know you want to. LOL!

  • so what hammond are you getting this amazing sound with? i loved it, great playin man.

  • This ones an Hammond A-101/21H leslie

  • Well it can be studied very easily, the blues that is. Don't worry about what he's doing specifically, you need worry about figuring out what the blues is, what the chords and scales are, how to play the chords along with the bassline and then you'll start building off that. Also, transcription is unrealistic, but the old fashion way is get a key board and play along, and keep rewinding it until you've got it.

  • Great!

  • So, what's the F blues scale?

  • Its the F blues scale.

  • just figure out the f pentatonic and go from there

  • I'm so sorry that nobody could actually tell you. F Ab Bb B C Eb F. Enjoy!

  • SOUL SOUL SOUL!

  • you play great organ

  • yes

  • Very cool, Love the riffs. c3ajeff, I don't think it can be studied, just felt! Very cool Joe, thanks for the vid.

  • soul can't be studied, just listened to...

  • I wish this kind of stuff was transcribed so it could be studied...

  • Wow! Love the bassline and riffs. Fantastic, have to check out your website.

  • Ah man. Dat wuz hotttttttttttttt!

  • Man you worked those keys.

  • You rule, man! :D

  • best left hand I've seen all day!

    Total split, man!

  • awesome playing. I love the sound of the Hammond Organ.

  • Great, man! :)

  • Sandu quote, nice.

  • This is simply awesome

  • You have to love the sound of a sweet Hammond B3. Great job only wished it was longer. Next time add some tremolo in there to bring that percussion sound out a little sweeter.

  • GUY ROCKS geat job!!!

  • Do you have sheet music for that bass line?

  • Yeah it would be good on bass!

  • Wow, you can really play that instrument. Unbelievably tight sounding!

  • makes me want to cry. I could listen to this stuff all day!

  • Yeah - hell yeah!

What greater blues instrument than a Hammond Organ?

  • I just wish this impro was 10 min long! Enjoyed every second of it. Extra plus for perfect camera view.

  • This is the true essence of the blues. Yeah Man!

  • fucking awsome

  • Awesome...

  • whats with the F blues?Everybody keeps playing on F :P

  • That's a good Q actually cause there is a lot of F with org blues. With Hamm organ, the F blues allows for a really low/deep 5 chord (c7) to drop. It also sets up the left foot bass quite well. These are just a couple of reasons I've come across. Gotta know all yer keys though.

  • and it's not such a huge pain for newbie guitar players to play along...they tend to whine if it's in Eb, Ab, Bb etc...basically all the sax-like keys.

    =(

  • F blues is killer. Why? What key should we play in?

  • This is why the Hammond organ has been a fascination of mine for over 30 years now. I don't think most non-musicians understand the breadth and power of this truly incredible musical instrument. Great stuff!

  • joe doria is a savage. the taint rules all.

  • ok..well c du blues de blanc...

  • Whoa this inspries me to pratice organ constantly! how long have you been playing?

  • Killer!

  • So fine, Jimmy Smith is smiling.

  • Awesome, what kind of Hammond organ is that ??

  • hell yes. thanks for posting.

  • You rock! Want to do the new theme to The Old Crankee Workshop??? That would be great.

  • did u play the bass line mostly with ur feet on the pedals aswell as ur left hand, or just ur left?

  • That's a combination of pedal tapping and walking bass with the left hand. It makes the bass lines have more a plucking sound mimicking an acoustic or electric bass walking for you.

  • A class man, teach me how to play! got any real basic lessons, coz i can play piano ok but i cant solo

  • i can't get enough organ jazz blues!

  • Joe D! you the man
