how do u play notes that are out of scale. like ur playing f blues but i see u using differnt nots like a and stuff how do u knoww what ones to use. like whats the formula
If you don't mind me asking, what are you playing with your left hand right before 0:18, to lead back into F? Is it a C-G-Gb triplet? Thanks for the video, by the way.
I love the sound of a hammond , it adds so much to blues and southern rock , or just music in general . a key underlying element of many of my favorite bands / players
Not quite so. Yes, these keys are presets but on a Hammond B3 they are fixed. They don't store settings like you would expect on a modern Instrument like the XK3C or new B3. On old Hammonds these keys work like the buttons on old radios and the C-Key stands for "cancel" which means switching from presets to the draw bars.
Does anyone know artists that play blues or jazz and include a Hammond organ? I am very interested in finding artists on the instrument and any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. This is a great vid.
NuBi LE is pretty good, one of the best free ones, just google it...but native instruments b4 is the one to buy (i don't know what it costs but its supposedly damn good)
Hi JDHammondman, I am 57 years old and a amateur B3 and keyboard player. I do not understand music theory, cannot read music, and tried several people online so I can learn more, but communication and other things can be a challenge. I live between Chicago and Indianapolis and have not found a teacher or anyone to help me. Any suggestions? I am in a rut, play the same old style and that is just basic. What would you suggest for a person in my situation to learn and advance efficiently. Thx
So JDHammondman, I am just learning organ, and I want to learn more bluesy stuff on my organ. I was wondering, everything that you are doing in this video, is it all scales, or is it alot more complicated then that? I have never had a lesson, and dont really plan on it. Thanks
This is what I am talking about!! Had to come and listen again, this is one of my Favorites. Man oh man I have a B3, but cannot hold a candle to your playing. Come over to my house and give me some lessons, I know you have a lot of time. I know you want to. LOL!
Well it can be studied very easily, the blues that is. Don't worry about what he's doing specifically, you need worry about figuring out what the blues is, what the chords and scales are, how to play the chords along with the bassline and then you'll start building off that. Also, transcription is unrealistic, but the old fashion way is get a key board and play along, and keep rewinding it until you've got it.
You have to love the sound of a sweet Hammond B3. Great job only wished it was longer. Next time add some tremolo in there to bring that percussion sound out a little sweeter.
That's a good Q actually cause there is a lot of F with org blues. With Hamm organ, the F blues allows for a really low/deep 5 chord (c7) to drop. It also sets up the left foot bass quite well. These are just a couple of reasons I've come across. Gotta know all yer keys though.
and it's not such a huge pain for newbie guitar players to play along...they tend to whine if it's in Eb, Ab, Bb etc...basically all the sax-like keys.
This is why the Hammond organ has been a fascination of mine for over 30 years now. I don't think most non-musicians understand the breadth and power of this truly incredible musical instrument. Great stuff!
That's a combination of pedal tapping and walking bass with the left hand. It makes the bass lines have more a plucking sound mimicking an acoustic or electric bass walking for you.
Can you do another one just like this...for about ten minutes? ;)

lennon2009 1 year ago
@lennon2009
Knowing all your scales/modes, playing songs (melodies), playing
"in time", playing what you're hearing, and so much more - all over time (some people get it sooner than
others, etc.) is the most honest answer I can give here.
The thing about playing "outside" (which really isn't "outside, really) is knowing
how to play "inside" well.
JDHammondman 1 year ago 3
@lennon2009 There is no formula for the blues, you just go with the flow.
Yaddahoo 1 month ago
so from what I got all your doing is going down the F Blues scale on the left hand and improvising using notes from F blues on the right hand?
fromdirttodustpro1 1 year ago
@fromdirttodustpro1
It is an F blues, so yes, there are notes of the blues scale there.
I can't say that's "all it is" there though, and this was a snapshot of what
I played "at the time". The next time ?...will be different.
Again, just playing a blues, playing what I ws feeling at the time.

they are preset keys. you can assign a preset drawbar setting to each of them. sort of like a favourites button.

Not quite so. Open up the back, the presets are quite easily changeable, and in fact are designed to be changed.

yea, but the doors didn't use a hammond. they used a vox continental with a rhodes piano bass, could sound like it. pull out all the white draw bars
Sabored 2 years ago
More like ELP, Yes or Deep Purple for hammond in the rock genre. Ray Manzaric used Gibson and Vox organs.

It's ear training, scales, chords, rhythms, theory..within the blues.
