  • LINUX MINT LINUX MINT LINUX MINT 10 10 10 NOT 11 tho cuz it sucks but 10 is AMAZING CODECS OUT OF BOX COMPIZ um software center SOFTWARE REVIEWS for programs it SC

  • Check out my Channel for Everything Linux and OpenSource People! Subscribe and I will Love you Long time! haha :)

  • also, what dock are you using? how do you get the transparent thumbnail of the open app when you mouse over the icon in the dock!!!???? that is slick! did you have to use some kind of composite manger? i can't figure that part out, so i don't use minimized thumbnails in my dock.

  • to clarify, i really want to know what the "stack" type feature is called where they all appeared in a circle like a clock, and you cycled through them. not the mac looking one that is really 3d. just the simple 2d circular one.

  • i use linux pretty efficiently...but am still learning.

QUESTION: i use compiz, and i have cairo dock. what are all those different "stack" options you have going on? are they all tied to the dock you are using? it might be overdoing it to have that many options. but just to have the one i think is the coolest would be useful.

  • its easy to migrate from windows to linux. but manipulating, intstalling in linux is a lot difficult than windows...

well i have no internet connection, i surf on cafe...

may biggest prob in linux is installing using Terminals....coz you are required to DL the files while installing,, but on Windows, an executable is often ready.. just click it...

but still i like linux better... it's just i can't get the edge on it...

  • i realy like linux but i wat a person to teach me to work on it.....i that person didn't show up :D

  • you say that because you use linux...but i am a windows user. :) do i have right?

  • but before that, I was a windows user, and I remember how easy the switch was for me a few years ago. It has only gotten easier since then.

  • linux is very hard to work.but the graphic is the most fantastic of all OS. this is it with this OS-linux.....nice but hard, very hard

  • actually, Ubuntu is really easy to use. Arguably easier than mac or windows.

  • @mpgarate I'm on Ubuntu right now! :D

Fucking LOVE it, just uhh... I'm a steam user.... and steam doesn't like Linux :c

  • @mpgarate Ive used all three and windows is still easier to use. Ubuntu i would say is almost there but it gets a little advanced if you need software thats not on the software center. Very close though.

  • @r0e0m0u0s026 linuz is easy to use just learn it,

  • I hate people wich think windows is the best OS

  • @sporemania Don't hate people. Just remember that they are uninformed, and you are not. Is that not good enough?

  • i love linux i replaced xp for it on my laptop cause my laptop realy sux and linux wrked way faster on it but on my desktop i have vista and linux dualbooting

  • Why did you need this effects does the default look like shit????

In WIndows 7 looks the default very good

  • Plz explain why that FUCKING matters?

    always room for improvements right?

Besides, ubuntu with compiz still looks WAY better than win7.. just installed both and i have no doubt which i think is coolest;)

  • nice wallpaper

  • Why do so many Linux videos not have talking in them. Who wants to just watch people move things around on their computer?

  • There for people who dont have to listen to anyone explain what you can go and read. Maybe you should stay with Windows. That way you can be breast fed.

  • How can I stay with windows when I'm not with windows? Maybe you should grow up a little. No one likes a bratty little kid.

  • hi! i have 1GB of RAM and the compiz fusion doesnt work, could it be because of my video card?, thanks.

  • me too, when i install ubuntu, the compiz never work... my video card is a ati radeon..

  • what version of gnome are this?

that look some as mac os, specially the bottom bar animated.

  • nice... how big is ur ram??

  • @DarkMission91

It works very well for me with 384MB SD RAM.

  • 512 is all you need, i have 4gb though, LOL!

  • i run both

    ubuntu and XP

  • xp? why some few programs dont work whit linux but then u can use wine or virtualbox :)

  • what screen recorder did u use?

  • It is excellent.. The only reason i have win vista and not linux is because linux cant run all games and programms.. :(

  • If you run vista I imagine drivers and much of an issue to be faffing around with, if that's the case, just learn how to use Wine, It can run most commercial games now, i never realised how powerful it was until I switched myself :)

  • Yeah wine is pretty sweet I was worried about the same thing as he was but after finding out about how well wine works and I've tested it myself and it works great happy I got rid of crappy vista! ;)

  • hey how doo u get the minimize like mac os x (genie effect) i have compiz and i dont get that effect where d i get it?

  • it has since been disabled due to apple copyrighting it somehow..

but in the animation section in the settings manager set minimize to magic lamp

  • ubuntuforums[dot]org[slash]showthread[dot]php=557491

  • im using ubuntu now how do you get compiz?

  • All you have to do is go to your Applications on the top screen and go Add/Remove and click all and search for Compiz then check the box then go apply changes make sure it say Advance Desktop Effects Settings and you now you have compiz enjoy :)

  • using synaptic is easier

  • Or "Add/Remove..."

  • How did you record this video?

  • are you a crapintosh worshiper????

apparently it is modified to feel like a crapintosh and me saw an apple picture

  • Actually no, he's a linux worshiper. Which is much cooler and doesn't require spending 1000+ dollars on a computer that people only buy so they can join the macbook cult.

  • It is sad, I have to have Windows and Ubuntu on my computer. Ubuntu for fun, and XP for work. But I can tell a difference in performance between the two; Ubuntu wins.

  • lol.....I have debian etch+compiz fusion for work and windows xp only for play games. And Ubunu gusty for my laptop.

  • i only use xp for games too. everything else is on gutsy, with all the compiz fusion i can get my hands on! it makes using the computer so much more fun!

I wish more people knew about it, windows pales in how good linux is.

  • You should test Debian etch!!! is more stable, secure and fast than ubuntu...I m using ubuntu on my laptop because it is very new and i have problems with hardware on debian...But Ubuntu is a great OS, i have used gusty and now hardy....

Ubuntu is the best for beginner users!!!

  • go linux go go go!!!

  • is there a link to get these pluggins im noob with ubuntu and how do u get these

  • The new belenix that just came out has compiz as a install option! I hope the next ubuntu will also!

  • OHAAAA, bu linnuz mükemmel bişeymiş ya

  • what video card do you have?

and how do you get those bottom icons?

  • leopard on speed!

  • nice video man

I have also running gusty with compiz with almsot the same effects,

but I wonder how to make the bottom menu?

can you gimmem a clue !!!

    anyways 10/10

  • HI,If i download the distribution in a live Cd, Can i do all these things and download adds? or it's necessary to install it as my OS.

  • Well even if you could install things like compiz, it would install to your HDD because it can't burn them to a disc, and don't forget ubuntu lags kinda bad off a CD (In comparison to installing it as an os)

  • SUPER COOL.

How did you get that effect at 00:43 ? I have compiz fusion but I can't do that. And how do I install the dock?

  • ring switcher, its an option in the settings

  • Thanks!!!

  • How do I make my bottom panel behave like the one of the video? Is gnome, right? I think is cool.

  • the panel down the bottom is AWN and has nothing to do with gnome

  • I can't get my sound to load on ubuntu 7.10! The drivers are already installed. It will work sometimes if i reboot, but it just stopped working! My sound card is a Soundblaster Live 24-bit internal card running on ubuntu gutsy gibbon. I have dual boot with Windows XP and the sound works just fine! Can somebody please help!

  • haha, you should post in the Ubuntu forums, not youtube.

  • I forgot to add, if this info is needed, that I have 128 MB of Video RAM

  • yes, i think your system will work fairly well. definitely worth a shot.

  • Thank you mpgarate.

    Two quick questions though:

Will this work with Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron, or do will I have to wait for a new version of Compiz Fusion?

And, will this work on Gutsy (or Heron) 64-bit version?

    Thank You For Your Help

  • 8.04 is still in beta, but is very stable. It should work in Gutsy or Hardy Heron, including both 64 bit versions. I recommend 32 bit, most commonly used version

  • Sorry for bothering you with so many questions, but I have one last question.

Given my system specs, would it be wise to use this, on a daily basis, at the maximum resolution (1440x900) of my laptop? Or, should I back it down to a lower res?

    Thank You Once Again

  • No, I use 1280x1024 and it's nice. 1440x900, you can try it. But I think it will get slow, depending on your video card.

  • Would this run somewhat smoothly on a regular basis o my machine?

HP dv8210us; 1.8 GHz AMD Turion 64; ATi Radeon Xpress 200M; 512 MB of RAM; 80 GB HDD with 30 GB used

The laptop s 2 years old, but it was "top of the line" desktop replacement at the time. Not so much now.

  • Is Compiz Fusion very unstable or you can use it on a daily basis?

  • you can run it on a daily basis. you shouldn't have problems. at least i dont.

  • There is a great project for those who dont know about it named 'Wine', it allows you to run many windows applications on Linux.

You can even use it to run some versions of Photoshop and World of warcraft.

i think when Wine evolves more and is integrated with Ubuntu we will finally have a true alternative to windows (and a superior one for that matter) ;)

  • I think we already do buddy^^ I've switched to Ubuntu and I'm not looking back = D

  • howd u get the mac dock in ubuntu

  • download it at rocket dock dot com

u can use the the dock in any operative system

  • what theme are you using to get the jumping program icons at the bottom?

  • except... this was release first...

oh and its in plenty of movies, you just have to keep your eyes open for it.

  • it is not a rip off linux has been here before any of the other oses it was the first

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA. Right. Except, this is more advanced than ANYTHING leapord could THINK about doing, and has been around for YEARS... Hmmm...

    Good Job...

  • ...And?

  • how do you do that thing at 0:34?

  • Question, im about to install the eeexubuntu in asus 701 eeepc. THe thing is, will the compiz work at xubuntu, or only at ubuntu?

    srry for the dumb question!

  • gutsy rox

  • Ubuntu is by far the best OS. Next is Mac then maybe DOS then OS/2 then FreeBSD then maybe Windows!

  • ubuntues gui is kinda of like mac vaguely

    but apple is expensive

  • *hi-five

windows works fine. like i'd rather use it then mac... geeze.

  • I think Windows should be further down the list!

  • Vista Is ok but its a resource hog and it was rushed

in my opinion this is how it goes

    1 Mac

2 Linux (i use xbutunu love it)

    3 Windows

  • ubuntu gusty, by far the greatest os i used. yes ive been using windows since 3.1. to xp but not vista( i learned my lesson) thank god for gutsy better than any other ubuntu release so far. so easy to set up and configure. but nice video, i still need to set up the dock.

  • cool is great the ubuntu gutsy

  • check out my video response it is the first one

  • hi. you can tell me how I can install compiz in my computer I have ubuntu 7.10 thanks.

  • the launcher is either kibadock or awn. wither way, its free, open source, and badass.

  • cairo-dock, which is a continuation of the gnome-dock project, is also a pretty sweet launcher for gnome/xfce4, with beryl/compiz enabled the dock is also drawn on all your virtual desktops.

  • Been trying to figure this out... How do you get the launcher on the bottom there?

  • lol nice foot

  • linux rule...windows is so far of this...

  • I'v recently installed Ubuntu, but upper taskbar was annoing me (i have small monitor, i need place). So i downloaded Kubuntu 7.10, but it runs slower, and update process generates error (s). :( KDE 4.0 on old PC runs veeery slow

  • Xou do realize that you can change the Positions of the panels (taskbars)) to where ever you want? You can delete the upper panel and add the menu plus the notification area to the bottom, emulating a Windows panel.

  • you can disable the upper bar in gnome ... at least in freebsd i could do it :) just try to find the setting for it

  • thx, but i prefering KDE, so far i know it better. also im goin' to try Suse 10.3

  • yep i use kde to :) by the way if you want a good linux try gentoo or debian, i personaly hate SuSe (i use FreeBSD but when it comes to linux that's what i recomend. SuSe lost it's speed, stability, security ... it can't be called a linux anymore

  • How can you do that expose thing where all the windows tile in plain site. I cannot find that in Compiz anywhere. Thanks.

  • super + e

is that what youre talking about?

  • No. Expose is where all the windows tile in plain site, you do it 34 seconds in. Say you have 10 windows open, what do you do to get them all re-size and display in 1 view.

When I press Windows+E it shows my cube in a zoomed out view with the 4 panels.

  • monchito puto te hacés el pro

  • yeah, linux doesnt havent to look good. Gnome gui looks cool. Get over your failure in being smart. and failure to make a decent comparison. the difference is like an apple and a candy apple.

oh yeah. failure in seeing how many distros of linux are out there. You, should stop trying to act like you know what youre talking about.

  • You obviously can't understand a basic allegory.

Has anyone told me a reason to use it? Besides it's free? No. I honestly want to know why there are so many fanboys, so far all I've heard is it's free, which I already said isn't an issue.

    Utter failure.

  • Please, don't use it. Enjoy your current OS.

  • hi, bill gates.

  • ignorance is bliss, isnt it? you havent even tried it, because your comment "So it looks "cool"" tells me you havent.

then trying to bash linux fanboys in the end fails.

ubuntu is stable, and works faster and better than windows. it comes with basically everything you'd need, and wait, it's 100% free.

vista and os x are great though, i use those and ubuntu. to be honest i use vista more just cuz everyone else does.

  • there you have it, straight from a biased point of view. epic comment fail.

  • This was biased... how? I've used linux, all you did was post "epic fail". Sounds like you have no idea what you're talking about.

    ....Fail.

  • if you used it, you'd know linux doesnt look "cool". that's just the gnome gui.

so yes, epic fail in trying to sound smart.

  • Uh... so you're saying it DOESN'T look cool? Thanks, so there's another reason not to use it.

And that's like saying if I said I ate an apple, and told you it's red, Then you say "you haven't eaten an apple, you only see it's red." Um, no. I've used linux, AND I've seen what it looks like. How are these two incompatible?

You're failing drastically, just stop posting for a while.

  • Luckily, since this is free software, it doesn't matter all that much what 'fail-saying' guys like you think about. And that's one of the best things about it.

  • The point with Linux is that you can pretty much "build your own OS". It looks just as cool you want it to look. Nearly everything is customizable.

  • linux is fine. If you don't like it, nobody's forcing you to use it.

  • actually, i've got vista basic running on amd64 x2 with 512MB & nvidia 7150 and it runs like a snail. I cant even think abt upgrading to premium n checking out aero.

Ubuntu with compiz on the other hand runs like a charm. amazed at what it manages to do with my moderate system.

  • Ya linux is amazing its all free.

  • grande linux!

    anch'io, uso la stessa distribuzione...

  • Visual Basic will never run in Linux because that runtime environment has to use Windows API's.

  • Mono provides Visual Basic to Linux.

  • LOL! It's got glxgears running on the inside! Good one!

  • The only reason I do not use Ubuntu is because it doesn't support PhotoShop CS3...

  • Hey did u ever heard about dual boot?

  • DON'T FORGET!

    Ubuntu is for free! :-)

By the way, I use Windows only for play games.

For the rest of time i use Ubuntu Linux.

  • I use Ubuntu to do all my work, I don't play PC games so I have no use for Windows.

  • Me too, i use Ubuntu only, i dont play any games :) win is sh** :)

  • Why don't you use Wine? Then you don't need Windows at all!

  • I can't install visual basic in ubuntu, i have the latest versions of wine... what do i have to do??

PD: lots of RAM required for compiz fusion... my pc runs sometimes hard with ubuntu in none effects mode... xD

  • I can't install anything with Wine/Crossover Linux because they are both just a bunch of shit!!!

  • lol

Linux is not shit, maybe you didn't find the right tutorials or things like this... Nearly everything you find for windows is avialable (sry 4 bad english -.-) for linux too, and the rest will run with Wine

  • Lol, Wine is amazing, don't bitch about it just cuz it doesn't work for you (while it does for many others). Post some programs that don't work for you. And also, did you even try looking at winehq?

  • OMG!

  • Hate to say it, but Vista "borrowed" quite a few ideas from Compiz. Also, it lags like a bitch, even on a "made for Vista" pc with high-end stats. Go Linux or go XP, but don't go Vista.

  • Then maybe you should do a virus scan now and then. I guarantee if you reformat with XP it will be way faster than Vista is.

  • is Adileader a retard, because its a fact that XP is faster then Vista. The only reason i use Vista is because of DirectX 10. But latley ive been using ubuntu alot... i cant get enough of linux :D

  • Did I say that Vista is faster than XP you retard ( I am talking about metalmaniacmat) ? DID I SAY THAT VISTA IS FASTER THAN UBUNTU? Jeez....

Ps.: Vista is not that slow but compared to Ubuntu/Xp it is slow. DID I DENY THAT?

  • OOPS my brother wrote that but I did not know...I apologize....i am really sorry...and sorry metalmaniacmat that I made you a retard but I didn't know about that.

    Ps.: Sorry again :)

  • dude, i dont even know what your talking about

  • Part2: As for Macs I won't pay 2500$ for a basic Mac just to get Leopard. For 2500$ I could buy a super performant PC that comes with Vista/ or even a better one with Ubuntu.

  • I find it easier running gusty as i am more familiar with the interface. I do agree vista is user friendly- for the average user that is. I find it really hard to find advanced settings for different components of vista. Also i need to risk a lot if changing super setting including the registry, gusty always has a working failsafe recovery system. Also I don't find vista to be customizable enough. not just animations..but lot of settings too.

  • Can someone please tell me why Vista sucks? I use Vista everyday and it seems fine. I can do whatever I want. I can install programs in one click just by using the .exe files. I don't have to go to synamtic, the terminal or add/remove programs to install something. Don't missunderstand me I use Ubuntu gusty as my main OS but still, and maybe You will laugh, I think Vista is More user friendly.

  • Yeah. I like Vista too. But the computer its running on has only 512 ram so its slow, but uses DDR memory so its too expensive to upgrade the ram. Compatibility is an issue too. Ubuntu plugs-and-plays with many printers and network cards, while Vista doesn't.

  • Really? I have an EPSON Stylus D92 and yeah it is recognised by Ubuntu howewher it prints blank pages!!! Well I know Vista has that too but seriously all of them have. You just have to get some patches some "legal" hacks and everything can be fine.

  • Oh and DDR is expensive? I thought that It is the cheapest after DDR2!

  • Well it gets to a point where older=more expensive. Mainstream DDR2 will cost less than DDR1 these days.

  • It doesnt suck but

    1 its expensive

2 doesnt work on low end pc

3 it was rushed so not the best

  • i like macs :D they dont copy off anyone else :D

i dont mind linux, i just prefer mac

i think we all laugh at windows :D

  • i see what you're saying.. but macs arent perfect. They did copy the multiple desktop feature from linux, no question about it

  • lol...You had to protect Linux...Btw I use Ubuntu and I think it is really cool

  • yeah that spaces is the only thing that they copied :S sadly lol i dont even find it that handy ... but thats my personal pref

  • And the dock from looking glass.

  • Linux and Mac are both came from Unix, "i like macs :D they dont copy off anyone else :D" is wrong. Besides, why should it be bad? Instead of wasting info and reinventing the wheel, pass it on.

  • I like it how you said that. Yeah you got the point!

  • yeah true im just saying that M$ shouldn't sell their os for so much money after copying so much

  • Some pointless addons. Lunix sucks.

    I'm not serious.

    But those effects DO suck.

    yes they do.

  • what os are you using that they are better? Seriously ill switch in a heartbeat

  • Go learn English. That I'm serious about.

  • i'm actually using ubuntu compiz fusion and it's great, kiba dock, 3d desktop everything is just perfect.

everyone should install it. (highly recommendable) :P

  • خطييييييييير المقطع

  • Ubuntu is the future, and sadly the anti axis of the world knows this... Expect codes written in poor spirit with loss of MS spies. I would expect a new partner for Canonixxx to pop up in Virginia any time. Learn it yourself, and get involved.

  • oh god, i hope you're wrong about that, ubuntu is not where linux should be going. of all the distro's i've tried, ubuntu has to be one of the most backwards and clunky. in attempting to simplify things for the average user, they limit the amount of control the user can have. which goes against the very idea of linux.

  • Rufsketch1 is right Linux was made for complete control over your desktop. Ubuntu is cool and all but its basically like using a faster version of mac.
