  • one of their best songs ever.. so many memories...

  • Every time i find a new song by The Cure, i feel like i just went shopping for my iPod. I'm a Cureaholic :D

  • Such a beautiful and haunting song !! One of my fav from them !!

  • Am I the only person on here under the age of 30? Im 14 and it seems like the only people who appreciate good music any more are like twice my age. At least.

  • @CarolynManson97 people of your age won't have the time to appreciate good music when they 'll be over 30. Their only free time will be for sleep

  • @TheEndlessNote I know....it makes me wanna cry.

  • @CarolynManson97 I'M 15!!! And me and my friends are an alienated little group who still appreciate awesome music like the Cure,Bowie,Joan Jett, etc. We need more like us,huh?

  • @CarolynManson97 I am sure when the cure was popular, people listened to the cure, and not the music from 20 years ago; same as now. Of course most young people will choose the music of the present, and not the past, it is stupid to even complain about that. I could have simply insulted you, because there is always one kid on old song videos who thinks he/she is special due to her liking of older music, it is rather annoying, but I figure I would be nice and break it down for you instead.

  • @CarolynManson97 BTW, plenty of kids your age listen to music from the 90s, 80s, and beyond. You aren't simple, not trying to mean, but you really are not. Every person goes through this phase thinking they are so different. You will eventually wise up.

  • GREAT SONG ! One of my favorites of The Cure!

  • Oh yeah good times!

  • @catastrpoheballet101 Personally I like seeing Smith's creative variety.

  • I'd always loved this song ♥ Forever CURE :)

  • This song makes my day every time i hear it !!

  • Moedig

  • a girl I knew back in high school gave the vinyl ep with this song on it to me as a sort of present....I havin't seen her in many years now so hearing this again is a lament indeed..

  • goooooogle

  • i love this song!

  • i love this music.

  • @xylemxorro Haha, no way... Pornography is the best. I love Japanese Whispers though, its a fun album with a lot of songs that are fun to dance to.

  • brilliant

  • the cure sings the truth....and that is why they amaze us. that is why they still have fans. they sound like no other. no one will ever recreate what they are. hats off to them. other bands may get close to being what they are, were, but in my opinion there is only one cure, one band that sings every emotion out there, and this is why i love them.

  • one of the best bands ,real music ,all origional so varied, and can play live .and still standing the test of time

  • one of the best bands ,real music ,all origional so varied, and can play live .

  • i'd love to play this all night at a club 18-30 disco

  • Pretty damn good. Simply great music and great video.

  • The best band of the world!!!!!

  • One of The Cures' best songs ever.

  • Somebody knows what is La Ment? Is this a river or what?

  • @Phyl1971 i think there's a double meaning: la ment as a river, where the man drowns, and lament as moan, complain

  • The single The Walk is one of the most perfect singles recorded by the Cure thanks to its B-Sides including this little gem!

  • a classic!

  • When I watched this, I felt so at ease with my acceptance of dying. This is so peaceful and gloomy at the same time. I wish I had more to feed my troubled mind

  • gotic just gotic

  • thanx for not posting live version >:~)

  • never ever does this song bore me...no way ! still soo good, that bass...those drums that voice..almost perfect y bien hecho luisCure19!

  • never ever does this song bore me...no way ! still soo good, that bass...those drums that voice..almost perfect

  • never ever does this song bore me...no way ! still soo good

  • the singles they brought out so far never reached such a high level as this masterpeace !!! goosebumps all over...

  • The beattles wish they could've wrote songs like this band.

  • i prefer the original version

  • All of these photos are fantastic!!

  • If it helps you as you listen to the lyrics, know that he is speaking of La Ment, a river in France. So, layered meaning. Hope that helps!

  • I'm sorry you will not like this if you think your a cure fan and all you have is the greatest hits. This is actually one of thier greatest songs ever!!! You must hear all their music over 26 albums!!! to really appreciate it, this is absolutely my favorite song. It just moves me every time, the music the lyrics so different, each song will have different meanings and to each person

  • Have of the American population over 30 doesn't know what Lament means. But if you listen to the Cure all Robert's songs will teach you language and meaning. Their is no other artists that truly uses his lyrics to encite thought.

  • @thepoopie2

I like how the person who wants to school us about what Lament means, doesn't know the difference between "half" and "have", "there" and "their", and misspelled incite.

  • @voodoodrew23

True, but he obviously intended to write entice, not incite ;)

  • SI triste mais tellement beau !!!

  • o yes, there's something magical about this song...

  • This song is so hauntingly breathtakingly beautiful!! Magical!! The Cure forever!! ♥♥♥ :)

  • algo mas triste? ja!!! devastadora amo esta canción.

  • 2:52. Za każdym razem gdy słyszę ten krzyk przechodzą mnie ciarki po plecach. Ten krzyk to rozpacz, to ból, to smutek.... lament.

  • Is it true that he wrote this song about a friend that was found dead under a bridge?

  • Is it true that he wrote this song about a friend that was found dead under a bridge?

  • Since its release in '83 Japanese Whispers has always been my favorite, especially Lament. Glad it wasn't just released to the Japanese market as RS had initially intended.

  • ...Waving with the last vanilla smile...

  • excellent video . thank you very much luis cure 19

  • This song truly just comes in and touches my heart and soul on such a deep level!! This is truly a mesmerizing and haunting song!! Such pure Cure magic!! I have loved The Cure for 27 years now and they have never ceased to amaze me with all the beauty in their songs and melodies!!! The Cure is truly a phenomenal band and Robert is an absolute amazing soul!! A true poetic genius!! I love it all !! The Cure forever in my heart!! ♥

  • LAMENT!!!!! This song is so gorgeous!! Such haunting beauty!! It just reaches deep in your soul!! The Cure forever and always!! :)

  • Is this album ever gonna be remastered with extras like the others? it needs to be!;-0

  • @peartfaldo its more of a Ep not an album, and its included on Joining the Dots Box-set, filled with Demos, unreleased tracks, B-sides and live rarities spanning the cures 1st 23 years of music it's not exactly a greatest hits compilation either but If your a die-hard fan, or just a frequent listener then the Box-set is definitely for you

  • omg - thanks - this is one of my favorite Cure songs ever. really.

    <3

  • For sure...this song seems coming so far away in my own personal memory...directly to the middle of the 80' s when I was teenager...

On that song...there is - for sure - Robert SMITH and The Cure...but don' f forgett also the other man behind that pure treasure...the famous producer

Steve NYE...- Penguin Café Orchestra...JAPAN' s band...and his charismatic singer...David SYLVIAN..., Steve NYE was the producer of TIN DRUM - the last JAPAN LP...and Brillant Trees...the first D.S...LP

    JYF...

  • javanese hipsters :)

  • old skool :-)

  • japanese whisper is my fav one

  • WOW! This is one of their best tracks, homie!! ..I REALLY love your video!! ..Its so moody like the song..

  • This song is both beautiful and haunting for me. I played both this and Plainsong repeatedly while dealing with my Mother's illness and ultimate passing. It will forever remind me of that time and her. Thanks Robert.

  • I always found this song so dreamy. It's underappreciated

  • We need the Flexipop Lament here on YT with Steven Severin on bass... another one of my favorite artists.

  • What have we really the right to say about such a poetic track ?

    R. Smith and The Cure touched the gist of beauty in their carrer several times.

    So do they precisely here.

  • i love this song

  • my favorite song of 1983!!!!

  • Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

  • I love this thank u luis :D!!!!

  • This song and Just One Kiss are really good songs. Too bad I can't say it about the other 6 songs from JW.

  • @PeSkeleton I'm afraid u re right...

but albums like disintegration, bloodflowers, pornography, wish, faith, ... make it allll gooood!

  • Thanks for taking time to post . THE CURE IS AWESOME!!!!

  • GREAT SONG !!!!

  • i love this song

  • Fantastic!!!!

Musica do caralho! Letra do cão!

  • One of their greatest songs ever. Not only is it well written, but it is sung with an emotion and intensity very few other artists can replicate. The Cure is the greatest band of all time.

  • One of their very best songs.

  • your 16 and american you can never know...that was a good one.

  • Please don't call The Cure "goth". Labels like that only cheapen their music and I'm sure that's not what Robert Smith wants.

  • @pashedmotatos True The Cure were around and dark before goth was cheap

I prefer to say there more of the old Gloom Rock

  • This is a song of my favourites.

    Love the Cure.

    Love Robert.

    Love his Japanese Whispers.

  • the cure did darkwave and goth rock and post dance pop they did everything from this to hot hot hot

  • no such thing as darkwave or deathrock or gothrock over here in the UK then. I was there.

  • w/e...maybe they didnt know what to call it but thats what it was

  • nope. you are 16 and American. You can NEVER KNOW.

  • that makes perfect sense...

  • I'm glad you agree.

  • clearly ur logic is undeniable...i mean noone ever went wrong generalizing a group of people based on what they see on tv or internet

  • Was this song recorded before Simon Gallup was kicked out of the group? That sounds very much like Simon's bass.

  • Gallup had left just before this album I think. but it does sound like his work. The Cure always have good basslines.

  • That bass is totally Robert's style. He wrote everything on Seventeen seconds and lots of the basslines on Faith and pornography. He did Lament on his own. In my opinon, one of the greatest songs ever writen.

  • This song is awesome. One of my all time favorite Cure songs.

  • I met them at The Elephant Fayre back in 1983. Really nice guys but they sure like a drink...

  • Robert smith!! why cant i be you!! The Cure is life changing! Dark without being emo. Soft without being false.

  • Wow, thanks :) I don't know if I've ever really listened to this particular Cure song. BEEEEAUTIFUL images too. Gorgeous video :)

  • Anybody who can write a song like one is, to my mind, touched with something very few of us can understand. It is a little known song, I admit, but pure pure pure genius!! This is The Cure that I fell in love with 20 years ago!!

  • BEST SONG EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it captures the whole of life itself

  • this song is one of the greatest ever released. a really lament... love

  • Hey que buen video

es realmente perfecto para la cancion, en verdad, asi me gusta reflejarla en mis fotos, buuuen trabajo

  • This song got me...since the first time I listend to it...about ten years ago, still breaks my heart!

  • ERIKAF... i real know what you mean..

  • @Erickaf its powerful enough to break ones heart every time.....i always give into crying before its over but maybe thats because i miss certain things...but your right....."oh the smell as candles die"

  • This is still one of his most beautiful songs ever....wow this brings me back to my younger days whenI was so involved in the gothic world & driving around in my MGB convertible in LA & Hollywood..fun memories..but time goes bye so quickly...

  • i really like that indian sorta backround:) this is something the cure can only do, thats what i love about them

  • The Cure are NOT a Goth band...

  • LOL STFU !!!!!

wikipeida say GOTH ROCK!!!! so cure is goth!!!!

  • so your gonna believe everything that the internet says? O.o

    yeaaaaa oookkay

  • LoL, you are like priests who lived in middle ages. They studied only Bible and what it said was considered truth. LoL

  • This is gothic rock. Real gothic rock. That's what everybody calls it. It's none of that gothic metal shit.

  • Gothic is a word to describe music that is used TODAY. In '80s this kind of music was called "new wave" or more properly "dark wave".

  • well "necromancer" darkwave is actually techno music with gothic lyrics. Joy Division and the Cure are very Gothic. And Gothic is used today but it was also used in the 80s to describe a kind of dark post punk. so don't fucking try and get smart with me because you read a page from wikipedia you need to stop being so small minded.

  • These are my opinions, I don't need to copy them from wikipidia or to cosider a truth what I read in it.

I have a brain and I use mine.

The real classification is new/dark wave, narrow minded.

  • fuck you!! the cure is not fucking goth u idiot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hahahaha goth? MAUAHAHAHA hahahahah LOLOLOLOL

  • then how come ppl that are goth today listen to the cure KINDA WEIRD HUH CONSDIERING THEYRE NOT GOTH?!?!?

  • Why the minus points? The poster is CORRECT.

because the modern day Cue fans are mainly a bunch of awful pricks wearing THE UNIFORM OF NON-CONFORMITY.

The Cure WERE post-punk. There were 'gothic punks' in the UK in the early to mid eighties.

It had fuck all to do with self-harming, satan, industrial music, shooting up your school or being a self obsessed bully victim or any of that humourless crap.

Anything that happened after this period in other countries is irrelevant.

  • Haha. That's just stupid. "Anything that happened after this period in other countries is irrelevant. "

    HAha.

  • Still remains fresh and beautiful as the 1st day... :D

The voice, the lyrics, the music... total masterpiece!

  • Beautiful song, thanks for posting it. What more to say?

  • far in my memories

  • Beautifull song, Thanx for posting this=D

  • ah, beautiful song!

  • The guitar

    The voice

    The lyrics

everything makes this song *THE SONG*

  • increible song...look at my cover :D!!

  • robert's melodic voice and those chilling guitar chords tingle my insides producing such a euphonic sound...man i love The Cure...thank you for posting Luis =]

  • Exactly what I was thinking...wow, what a haunting melody. I love the 80s Cure sound with the darkwave influence...very compelling.

  • this is one of the best cure songs ever.

  • One of my favorite cure songs, sadly I can't find any evidence of it ever being played live. I guess robert smith didn't like this album, which is a shame.

  • @pdxpunk85 hi! if you type this: "Jason Cooper can't groove - The Cure's drummer", you will find a live performance of LAMENT at the end of the video, its amazing!! :)

    highly recomended :)

  • Nice vid! There is something in this song..

  • THIS SONGS WICKED I LOVVVE IT TOTALLY DANCE MUSIC TOTALLY 80S OFF OF JAPANESE WHISPERS WOOO I love that ALBUM PEOPLE GET IT IF U DONT HAVE IT

  • @tarkiss "Chinese"? is "Japanese" Whispers... :)

  • @tarkiss You should hear Japanese Whispers... It's even better!

  • @KillYourTeeVee :D that's cute

  • @KillYourTeeVee

    Javanese hipsters ?

  • Comment removed

  • @tarkiss Japanese Whispers not Chinese Whispers.. right continent wrong country.

  • @tarkiss its japanese whispers. you FUCK!

  • I imagine somewhere in an old haunted house a ghost sitting by a window looking out at a changing world while this song plays. The ghost laments over its lost love.

  • Simplemente apasionante....adoro esta canción...ojalá la hubieran tocado en Barcelona!!! Creo que, junto a Figurehead es la mejor y más melancólica canción que se ha escrito....

    The Cure is The Music....

  • Great song! And I also like your video.

  • One of the best and most underrated cure songs.

  • This is the most sublime song i´ve ever heard from The Cure. Robert Smith is such a poet painting a beautiful picture of solitude and death. Thanks for the video.

  • The Cure are the best!

  • Rarely performed live, this is Robert at his best. Quite simply, one of the most profound songs of the twentieth century.

  • thank yu i will always be the same .

  • AGREED!

  • glenn yes

  • underneath the bridge.... adoro esta canción!! muy buen video luis x)

  • This song and "Just One Kiss" should've made it onto Pornography.

  • Always loved this song, thanks for posting

  • Beautiful video... one of The Cure's best!

  • Japanese Whispers is such an over looked Cure album. Thanks so much for posting this video, Its impossible to pick a favorite cure song, but this one may very well be in my top 3, I just love "One more ice cream, river body, flowed underneath the bridge", I can visualize it so perfectly, seen from on top of the bridge, her body looking like a melting ice cream optical illusion from the water...

  • THE CURE IS LEGEND .NICE WORK LAD.

  • the masters of dark - goth & new wave!

  • Happy New year Guillermo. ^_^
