  • She's just great.

  • laurie, i didn't know you were so good at haunting captive audiences since your snl appearances ..

either way, still love ya :)

  • I just luuuv teleprompter-reading Frankfurt theory informed social problem experts funded by Goldman Sacks and JP Morgan. Welcome to the era of kinetic action peace-keeping mass murder for the victims' own good. Thank you post-modernists! You are, like, so totally cool and socially respsonsible! Heil Critical Theorists!

  • As always she's telling the truth...sadly

  • finally i found this ... its been 2long ^_~

  • I need the sushi solution...

  • i watch this when i smoke weed, pretty trippy

  • @Mr12brandon12 ditto

  • This is shit.

  • @PorroFirst This is THE shit !

  • Brilliant!!!

  • She is GOD.

  • why must we complicate the world?

  • the problems actually don,t exist. we created them, the society, by considering them a problem...is such a truth in her lyrics and such an athmosphere, genial

  • so I don't get it. is she saying we shouldn't have experts, or that we shouldn't have problems??? or is this just some weird roundabout way to talk about corruption. either way she needs some new synthesizers.

  • There ain't much music here. The words and the idea are good, but it just ain't nothin creative in the execution. Even the greatest artists have duds and this is one of hers. Tater likes to blame Lou Reed.

  • good song....it's so real!

  • she is a cool dude

  • brilliant maybe if i fall!

  • I love the sarcasm "So if there's no expert dealing with the problem, its really actually twice the problem, coz only an expert can see theres a problem and only an expert can deal with a problem".

    Self appointed experts....

  • @Corrupt5358 - aka Lobbyists and such.

  • Outstanding! I have the following on LP & CD. # Big Science (1982) US #124 UK #29 # Mister Heartbreak (1984) US #60 UK #93 # Strange Angels (1989) #171, featuring Bobby McFerrin # Bright Red (1994) #195 United States Live (boxed set) (1984) #192 I also have her film Home of the Brave: A Film by Laurie Anderson - 1986 I thought she stop making music. Time for me to return to the record (CD) shop. As for Lady Gaga, she is a clone of Kate Bush (Brit), not Laurie Anderson.
  • Excelent!

    Aplauze!

  • hilarious and brilliant!

  • I have to agree, as much as I love Laurie's music to bits, this isn't exactly a stunning performance of either of these. Wobbly and hesitant, boooo

  • i only wish we lived in a world with millions of humans like laurie .

  • she has big sleeves thumbs up if u agree

  • hi

anybody got a link to this song from the letterman show?

    thanks

  • @1850696969

Pretty sure it was deleted. :(

  • Most wonderful performer in the world ... Pure beauty ...I have met her ...

  • @shireenj Tater showed her hte ways of love.

  • SHe's simply talentless

  • thought provoking maybe.... but this certainly doen't sound good.

  • @qwersathome this is experimental music and is supposed to be different in other words the song is meant to make sense unlike other rap pop and other shitty genres if you just listen you would understand

  • i guess everyone wants to cash in on Lady GAGA... but she should at least memorize her rap! it didn't even rhyme

  • @lilmonstar98 Hey clown, she was doing this stuff before Lady Gaga (who, by the way I love!) was even born! Get your chronology together!

  • @lilmonstar98 Not everything has to Rhyme, dear. :P

  • Denmarks answer too Laurie Anderson is Dan Tùrell, he made these kind of poems in the 70'ies, 80'ies. I was watching David Letterman when this woman appeared, I was mezmorized..

  • @iSmokepod me to :D I loved this song when i heard it first time.

  • Thought provoking.

  • what is with this song

  • @BlacBoyProduction. This is called Experimental Music. It is not intended to be like other music. Laurie Anderson is the "Betsy Ross" of this genre.

  • Is it just me, or is she making a lot of mistakes in this video? Lol. Sounded better on Letterman.

  • @mawehe63 really your such a nerd !!!

  • @TheSamo1996 shut up samantha

  • Hold on, at the beginning of the massive oil spill in the gulf, the "experts" at BP said their was no big problem. Where as every one else, not an expert, could quite clearly see that there was a huge problem.

  • this is the most weirdest 8 mins and 40 seconds of my life

  • DUDE THIS SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • yeah, i heard this on letterman last night. I understand the statement she's getting across. I could have written this song in a half an hour. This isn't talent. It's very annoying actually. So annoying, that I had a nightmare last night in which Laurie Anderson was singing this song, Only an Expert. I couldn't help but look it up again on here and post my negative opinion.

  • brilliant

  • Just saw this on Letterman. I never thought i'd be intrigued by this music/poetry. Very interesting messages that are so true about life and the world. The way most people are easily convinced by experts in life... I really like the part about Oprah and in the end where she talks about war.

  • This women as I showed my son, is a fine example of over exposure to drug and alcohol abuse. My urine hitting the toilet water makes better music. My blind barber gives me a better hair cut. Her command of the queens english is sooooo deep, tea spoon deep! She is not "signing ". Only the expert can deal with her problem.

  • hahahahah this is the stu[idest song i have ever head only a retard would like this crap this sucks so bad michael jackson is sounding good ...............losers

  • @christian96701 If you don't like the song, then don't watch the video on youtube! I believe you are the one who is the retard. What kind of music DO you like then? New Kids on The Block? nsync? backstreat boys? britney spears? Don't post a comment on a song if you already hate it. because you had to take the time to search for it, so you, my friend, and an idiot.

  • jezzzzzzzzzzzzzzhhhhhh! My fav old singer after yoko ono!!!!!!

  • queen!

  • you know a good lair stretches truth so you u feel he just over done it not ripped u thats how the manipulated world works

  • can't wait for her new album. this song is definitely going to be one of the standout tracks.

  • That was sickkkkkkk

  • When I first saw LAnderson in 1984, I thought she was the sexiest woman I'd ever seen! That says _something_ about me... ah, but why did she have to get old? Why do we have to get old, sick, die, all that...

  • @DailyBrusher she is still gorgeous and i have to admire her for continuing to be right out front and letting her accumulated wisdom show on her face. you can still see that the fire burns inside :)

  • Never heard this track before, but I'm glad to say that it has just become my 100th favorite video on Youtube!

But only an expert can see there's a problem.

  • cracking another 100% as per usual you can meet her yesterday, now or in the future she is great !!!!!

  • Deadly rhythm! And the words really fit with. CONGRATS! She has her own original style which I love :)

  • I love Laurie Anderson, this song i do realise is a faster tempo than many of her usual spoken word songs...but i do miss the slower pace songs...the slower ones allow the real resonance of her voice to come through. And allow her speach pattern to come through better. Love her no matter what. Just wish i could get a copy of her NASA performance..i dont think one exists though.

  • Saw her do this in Dublin a couple of years ago. She's awesome!

  • I had an opportunity to see this lovely lady with her husband Lou Reed in Helsinki just one week ago. This very song has now grown to just another level. Here its nice, what we saw was wonderful.

  • genial

  • Lovely! I was lucky enough to see "Homeland." I think this section was inspired by George Trow's book "Within the Context of No Context."

  • she is art in sound now

  • think it's korg's and yammy's ;o) - bloody brilliant though ... that looks like 'cakewalk' for the software... she blood brilliant to be able to do this LIVE!!!! 10/10

  • what sort of synthesiser do you think she uses?

  • i'm an expert with a problem.

  • uh oh...sounds like you'll need another expert!

  • Laurie is a true innovator and in the category of "Performance Artist", has always pushed the envelope throughout the years. Watch her vintage clip of "O Superman" and compare it to this more recent piece, and you can plainly see how much she has evolved musically, and yet maintained the pixie like playfulness which makes her memorable and enjoying. Plus, she friggin married Lou Reed -- and HOW COOL is THAT, huh????

  • She has always use her music, as almost performance art, to express the absurdities in our culture. I think she is amazing.

  • You can always use a butter knife as a screw driver.

  • manny times i have.....

  • beautiful execution of truths

  • Intense lyrics in this performance. Not really my aural cup of tea though.

  • BRILLIANT !!!

  • Joshke17. Suppose you have a plumber come out to deal with a leaky pipe, he's an expert on plumbing, but he lies to you about what needs to be fixed, so he rips you off by lying about the problem. Now suppose it is a politician or say a President and lies to you about the intelligence that is presented to you even when the intelligence department is saying that it is faulty intelligence.....do I need to go on! You can't always trust the experts and what they tell you!!!!!

  • @richardbates1 now your just being a dick about it.

  • @paniagua0123

    Your'e probably right.

I made this comment a long time ago.

  • @richardbates1 haha true true

  • @paniagua0123

Not to mention 3 glasses of wine that night.

    Peace my friend.

    Richard

  • @richardbates1 it took a while but you nailed it..!

  • She's married to Lou Reed...hmmm must be an interesting combo.

  • Laurie is one of the few geniuses left among us. Additionally, she is one of the few artists out there who use vocoders creatively. Even beautifully.

  • @electroluxia agreed

  • She is a genius. Pure genius. This is brilliant. Brilliant!!!

  • i saws her live it was awsum xP

  • THIS. Live, loud music plus the light and smoke effects...it was intense!

  • I think she's an verry important woman. For me she's a big inspiration. Hope she cry and yell heaveyr and louder.

Mor Laurie More and a great tune

  • What exactly are you looking for? This isn't simply within the genre of music, it's a poetry reading with creative synth, and executed well. It is art.

  • I dont know what kind of stuff do you like, but what I know for sure is that, whatever it is, if I dont like it, you cant force me to like it, either you cant force me to not like this.....

  • Laurie has mentioned that Homeland was born from the feeling she lost her country.

Tonight, I hope she feels - as I do that hope has been restored.

Barack Obama -- President Elect of the United States of America.

  • The seceond line should have read, "Tonight, I hope she feels -- as I do -- that hope has been restored."

Sorry, anal English major here ...

  • moii

  • such a genius

  • she is a genius

  • this woman has done so much in her life and shared it with all of us.. sorry im gushing but thanks, again.

fan since before her saturday night live appearance

  • the end is beautiful, thank you laurie

  • this is as awesome as laurie ever will be.

    let x = success

  • She looks good too for someone turning 60 :)

    I've loved her since the 80's :)

  • She ís wounderfoul, brillient

  • I saw Anderson perform this live and you really need to see her do this live to appreciate where she's going. She's as much a performance artist as a musician. I believe she incorporated the internet in the show and had live feedback streaming while she was performing. One comment that I heard during the "concer" was that it seemed to attract people of all ages, and it certainly did.

  • oh my god she has money, lets burn her

jimshoes, thats a guy we should hear, the next U.S.A president thats a job for you

  • all is been said, she is brilliant!!!

  • que es esto? de donde la sacaron a esta mujer!!

  • es Laurie Anderson, presta atencion a lo que dice, pura verdad, es brillante!!!!

  • Only one word , BRILLIANT

  • I'm amazed that such a petty level of flaming can break out for such a brilliant song by such a brilliant artist.

To all the people (I'm looking at you, JimShoes1) who come here simply to state how much this sucks...

...don't watch it. Go back to your immature areas of the site and leave us the heck alone. Thank you.

  • This is hilarious. But the darkness underlying the humor makes me wonder if the artist has faced a struggle with cancer (her own or a loved one's) as there seems to be a subtext here about the often controversial means by which cancer is attacked ("killer cure" as they say) and the nature of the search for unorthodox "weapons."

  • she is very artistically minded and therefore wants to impact listeners with a unique touch of reality and serious thinking which adds philosophy instead of commercialised mentalities

  • Mr Jimshoes1 shame on you!!! this is a timeless artist and you shouldn't dare to say things like that, of course you are a supporter of the Bush regime and therefore there's not much going on in your head...

  • I dont think anyone who likes Bush owns a computer; and if they do they have problems that an expert could hardly deal with.

  • Does argumentum ad hominem mean anything to you?

  • Hi JimShoes1,

Maybe you're being too hard on Laurie Anderson. She's right in pointing out that we give to much privilege to people claiming to be experts given that "experts" have often made a mess of things. I admire Anderson for her curiosity and courage, and I've really enjoyed her music over the years.

I didn't realize how much she's aged given that this is the first time I've seen her in many years, but I guess I've aged, too. She's still the same old Laurie, which is great.

    Best!

  • Actually, she's a talented musician.

  • This is the first time I have seen this. It's an sensability that many may not understand, appreciate, or agree with. I happen to agree, and find it funny.

  • glorious

  • Bliss!!!

  • I saw her do this piece last night in Charleston. Like others have mentioned, she has refined it and perfected it since this recording. Go see her if you get a chance! It was a great show.

  • Shit is in ur head.

Laurie Anderson is sublime, a poet

    OVER YOUR HEAD OBVIOUSLY!

  • you're not a thinker huh?

  • Thanks for giving me two whole choices. It makes me sad that the performance is sloppy; also that her audience doesn't hold her to a higher standard.

  • You're comment is hilarious....I like it...but I can see her genious...

  • muckin refarkable

  • Danke Laurie Anderson - it takes an Artist to treat these topics in an artistic way

  • This performance serd. I mean is sad.

  • does it make you sad that she's addressing the truth or that you disagree?

  • Thanks for giving me two whole choices. It makes me sad that the performance is sloppy; also that her audience doesn't hold her to a higher standard.

  • that's like saying Picasso and Van Gogh "draw weird"

  • Bull. They painted what they meant to. Laurie's mouth here is not saying what she means for it to say; she's stumbling over words and slurring like crazy. Meanwhile her fans are nearly all bewildered fakes. At her best she's far too good for you.

  • so who do you think is a visionary artist ?

  • Lots to choose from: Paul Bowles, Dylan Thomas, The Proclaimers, David Lynch. Laurie Anderson is in there somewhere. But I don't get all pissy pretending she's infallible. I doubt that any of the pissier people posting here have ever been moved by The Dream Before or know what it's about, but if Laurie performed it with hiccups they'd call it a revelation. They're like the kingdom in The Emperor's New Clothes. Wherever there are poets there are posers.

  • Saw a great performance of this at the Barbican in London on the 3rd May.

  • yeah, I saw the London one too. Been trying to find a video as good as that show :P

  • I think in fact this woman is a genius.

  • this woman is such a storytelling talent, she surmounts it all, even her own aesthetic limitations, self-imposed or just unconscious, innate. clear vision is more important than any art(ifice). may she live to be a hundred and still kicking

  • I've been enlightened. Take a well-deserved bow, Laurie. Her performance at UC Santa Barbara from last night was my first live experience with her art form, and it was highly engaging. Ripe with insight on our confusing and at times desperate state of existence. Loved the reference in another piece regarding Kierkegaard "Life must be lived forward but can only be understood backward..." Keep us thinking.

  • Brilliant, consistant, divine.Laurie Anderson never ceases to amaze me with her music and words.

  • "overrated career"?

Get your head out of your ass, She's a visionary.

  • Any chance you might vote a visionary into the White House one of these days?

  • Hell yeah!

  • good luck!

  • ....in your opinion!

  • I LOV THIS SONG, I first heard, i was changing the channels and came apon this performance on ps, i liked but had no idea she was the artist, shes really good, i lov to meet her

  • Saw this performed live last year at teh Sydney Opera House - she got a standing ovation afterwards!

  • I have always thought Ms Anderson was hit and miss, but her trenchant anger here is electrifying (pun intended!). She has always been a maddening inspiration. Thanks for posting this; I will be looking out for her on tour!

  • Amazing talent.... keep it going Laurie!! Must go walk the dog now.

  • :-)

  • She just keeps getting better, and improving on herself.

    Straight talk, if you listen.

We see her in April. Can't wait!

  • AMAZING. Poetry 2008

  • everlasting talent

  • 1.3 paychecks away from subprime homelessness.

Now thats a problemo in the US and soon to be

same in a theater/location near you.

  • Where's Lou Reed?

  • Thoughtful, witty, return to form for Laurie. If you don't like it, try something else - it's not a problem.
