It's for safety reasons. It has nothing to do with second hand smoke anymore.

The hot smoke changes cabin pressures, and that can affect the oxygen mask deployment sensors. Imagine a flight where you have been smoking, a door rips off the plane for some unknown reason and your damn oxygen mask won't deploy.

Believe me, we're not trying to stop you from smoking. It's your right. But don't blame the airliners when it's the aircraft manufacturer's regulation.

I work as a PILOT and as an aerodynamic engineer for AIRBUS and you don't even know how bad is to smoke in the cockpit. The smoke infiltrates the panels and cause small electrical discharges on electronic devices, wires and even in the avionics. Such a dumb thing to do in a cockpit. By the way, IT IS CRIME to sit in the Captain's seat while in flight. You are compromising the life of the aircraft itself by destroying its components and putting in risk all passenger's life.
