@dutch1565 Ocala is well known as the horse capital of the world, one of only five cities (four in the USA and one in France) permitted under Chamber of Commerce guidelines to use this title based on annual revenue produced by the horse industry.
Great job on the history of Ocala. I have wonderful memories growing up there in the 1950's when we would cross 17th Street in our bare feet to feed oranges to the neighbor's cows. It's changed a lot now. The gentleman's farm across the street is now a Publix, and the house I grew up in is gone. But I can still ride through Ocala and tell my own kids what used to be here and what we used to do there. Thanks for the reminders.
Excellent job, Grant. I grew up in Ocala and graduated from Vanguard H.S. in 1985. I remember a lot of the images you have in your video. I loved Six Gun Territory as a boy and even that old Morrison's Cafeteria Sign and old yellow decor. (It was ugly!)
Anyway, thanks for taking me back to my past. Love it!
@imadude123124 yep, only goopd thing to come out of this boring ass town, and ohhh i went to school with the oringinal members of ADTR =D just saying =)
Great video! I have lived in Ocala 10 years now and havnt found anywhere else I would like to live in the usa, and I have been to alot of citys and states. Its always nice to come home to Ocala!!!!!!!
SLowwwwwcala!!! Ocala is a great place to grow up, but not a good place to spread your wings, and grow, and experience different things! That's why teens and young adults call it slowcala! There is NOTHING to do.....Nothing at all!
I googled Ocala looking for a brief history, and this is the very best result. It's clear, concise, conveys a 'sense of place' exactly as it should. Grant, you've outdone Ocala's professional boosters, and I hope they've had the good grace and common sense to recognize your work--
steve morse (deep purple(s guitarist) and John Travolta live there, they have their own airfield. you can see their house on google earth. i'm french but my dream is to visit this city!! 5* very good video
Wow, Grant! I can't tell you how much I enjoyed your video! I was born in Ocala in 1958 and lived there until 1984 when I moved to Tampa. I attended Oakcrest, Ft. King, Vanguard and CFJC/CFCC. I've never lived more than 100 miles from my hometown. I haven't been back much since my mom died, but your video has definitely made me homesick. Thanks for the memories!
@VodoFL ...You were born in Ocala?...I have an antique sugarcane mill that was made in Ocala, but have not been able to find the company that made it...do you remember ever seeing this company as you were growing up?..
Good job on the video!!! I miss Ocala I spent 15 years there on 8oth ave. I have to go on business to Orlando in a week but you can bet I will be coming threw town to spend some time before coming back home to New Hampshire.
What a delightfully educational video! I'm too a multi-generational native and enjoyed growing up in Ocala. The photos of the storied restaurants took me back to the early 80s.
I live in ocala all my life and we have horsies eveywhere from tracks and they mostly all horisies do live on dirtroads? we are not a major city like orlando so we live in a peachfull hood and i still live here and 1 thing i do want in ocala was a coaster park? cause i am a rollercoaster fan but ocala won't let us have 1 :[
i absolutly love this video..i was born and raised here. Evergreen elementary Howard middle and VHS CFCC.. Great job im stationed in washington first time leaving and now i appreciate the small town feeling more than ever.. Thansk for the history
I grew up in Ocala--- Wyomina Park, Fort King, Vanguard, CFCC, UCF-- Worked in my school days at the original Publix at the Ocala Shopping Ctr. Left in 1994. I now live in upstate SC. A bad day in SC is still far better than a good day in Ocala.
I just read about your video in the newspaper and had to stop by to see it. I'm a third generation Ocalan myself and it was great to see the history of the town. Great work!
That was incredible!! I am from Florida and live here still. I have been to Six Gun Territory, the springs and the water park, oh also Don Garlits museum. That was something I would see on the history chanel.
Grant, this is a wonderful video you have done for all of us who love Ocala ..... the old pictures were really awesome and I personally loved the music !!! You can be proud of what you have produced for our city.
Grant, what can you tell us about the indian population which preceded white man around Ocala? It would be great to have an addendum to this video going back before the civil war.
Grant, you did a very informative and entertaining video, thanks! I am sharing it with my siblings, who have mostly moved away to the "big city". Ocala has been a great place to grow up, and is a great place for me to raise my son.
omg wow.. i knew some history on ocala.. i've lived here all my life.. i'm still pretty young though.. just 17 but this really cool.. i wanna know more :) good job... i love ocala and i much rather live here then orlando or miami or tampa.. there is too much crime in those places
This was very well done. Im sure your very proud. My mothers grandmother was born here and apparently the family name even today is well known. I do family research and you video gave me a look back into the 1800s at how they lived. Thank you. Very well done and hope you received an excellent grade.
Fabulous job, Grant. A friend shared this on Facebook. I remember those restaurants ... and Six Gun Territory, of course! Lucky you to be a part of such a lineage of Ocala residents.
What a great video... I left Ocala, my birthplace, in 1958 to go to Emory Univ, and have been in Atlanta since.. I will show this t video to my grown kids and their children to let them see where their dad grew up. My folks ran "The Hub" store on West Broadway for over 40 years , and what a sentimental trip your video gave me. Ocala was good to my family, and what a great town it remains.
Wonderful job cousin Grant!! Your Great grand dad would be so proud as would be your Greatgrandmother Edna Sims Green. Really enjoyed this. Bonnie Zane-Smith
Grant, WOW great video. My husband (Freddie MacKenzie) was born/raised in Ocala and loves his town. Thanks for the memories of such special places that we have all enjoyed. I play bridge with you sweet grandmother, Andrea.
Grant................Awesome job! My parents moved us to Ocala in 1973 and enjoyed the pictures. They gave me alot of grea memories, thank you for a blast into the past. Also it was very informative, learned things I didn't know - very interesting! Keep up the good work!
Connor and I just watched your video and we loved it!! Great job. I loved looking at the old pictures.... I remember eating fresh seafood and hushpuppies at the 1890 House. :) -- Weldon
Awesome job Grant! I, too, am a 5th generation Floridian. I was raised in Citrus county, and going to Ocala was like going to the big city for us. Thanks for sharing this!
Grant, love it and I remember playing in that front yard as I grew up in Ocala in the 1950's and 1960's. I enjoyed seeing the sights of old Ocala. Good job. Keep up the good work.

Wow Grant! This is amazing. You did an outstanding job on this. The pictures of your grandfather and great grandfather are great, and the "then and now" shots too! Great job!
