Ken, This is such an awesome video. I am currently going to school at the New England School of Communications and I have been using a similar set up at my school. I really appreciate you showing the settings on the Distressor. Such an awesome compressor. Thanks for the video.
PS- You ever need anyone to grab you coffee or set up mics for you, I will drive down to Tampa anytime!!! haha
its easier to hit a compressor that hard when your tracking when you are also the producer. I would not have been so aggressive if i was only the tracking engineer, but as the producer i knew exactly what i wanted, i knew what the Distressor could do, and hopefully you'll get to hear the finished album soon and you can be your own judge. "Girls & Boys" was picked as first single, so hopefully you'll get to hear it on the radio soon. -Ken
Hi Ken, would it be possible to rec.the same voc.without the Distressor, and get such a natural compression with a plugin of any kind? Is it really possible or it is just a @^#^&WT that the TDM or VST advertisers want us to believe? On what would you spend money first if you had...let say...4000$ ,would you buy a HD1 system or ether Pair of Adam A7 or Genelec 8030 + sub,CL73 pre,Distressor and Telefunken ak47?
@nikolamijic there are some pretty good plugins out there, like MCDSP and waves. There are a lot of crappy plugins too... but even the crappy ones have their own little idiosyncrasies... so it's really a matter of taste and application.
A lot of pros like to compress slightly (say 2:1 ratio) while going in to help with peaking.. especially with a voice with a lot of dynamics.
I have been using the GT SuPRe and love the sound.. And the distressor is by far in my top 5 favorite pieces of gear that i've used!

Unidyne III through a 6176. It's honestly one of the best things ever for vocals. A match made in vox heaven.

I must say those vocals sound smooth indeed!

no tube condenser mic can make up for this guy's lackluster vocal technique.
